To improve indoor air quality quickly, reduce indoor pollution sources, check whether outdoor air is cleaner before opening windows, and run a properly sized portable HEPA air cleaner where people spend the most time. If wildfire smoke is outside, keep windows and doors closed; filtration helps with particles, but no single device removes every kind of pollutant.
What to do first for cleaner indoor air
- Stop adding pollutants. Do not smoke indoors. Avoid candles, fireplaces, and other combustion. During a smoke event, limit cooking, vacuuming, and other activities that generate particles.
- Check outdoor conditions before ventilating. Open windows or use an outdoor-air intake only when outside air is cleaner than indoor air. If wildfire smoke is present outside, keep windows and doors closed and limit outdoor-air intake.
- Clean the room people use most. Place a portable HEPA air cleaner in that room and run it at the highest fan speed people can tolerate. Use a unit sized for the room, and avoid ozone-generating designs.
- Improve central filtration if the system allows it. Fit the highest-efficiency HVAC filter compatible with the equipment, check that it seals properly, and replace it when dirty.
These measures work together: source control prevents more pollution from being added, ventilation can dilute indoor pollutants when outdoor air is clean, and filtration captures some pollutants already in the air.
Should you open windows for fresh air?
Only when outdoor air is cleaner than indoor air. Ventilation can help remove pollutants indoors, but opening windows during wildfire smoke or other outdoor pollution can bring more particles inside. When outdoor smoke is worse, close windows and doors and limit outdoor-air intake while using filtration.

A portable HEPA air cleaner can reduce airborne particles in the room where it operates. It is a practical first filtration step when you need cleaner air quickly in an occupied room. Choose a model rated for that room’s size, run it at the highest practical speed, and consider noise and the ongoing availability and cost of replacement filters.

Portable cleaners are intended to serve a single room, not automatically the whole house. They also do not address every pollutant: particle filters are not a substitute for controls aimed at gases, moisture, radon, or carbon monoxide. Avoid ozone-generating air-cleaning devices; California Air Resources Board certification is a low-ozone screening option.
What MERV filter should you use in an HVAC system?
MERV 13 is a common target for smoke protection when the system can handle it. Do not install a filter based on its rating alone: verify the filter dimensions, fit, and equipment compatibility. A filter that does not fit well can allow air to bypass it, while an incompatible filter can restrict airflow. Replace dirty filters.

EPA’s wildfire-smoke course guidance reports that indoor PM2.5 can be around 55%–60% of outdoor levels when doors and windows are closed and portable cleaners are not used. In scenario-dependent estimates from the same guidance, continuous operation with a high-efficiency HVAC filter may decrease PM2.5 concentrations by about 50%; continuous operation with a typical low-efficiency filter may reduce particle concentrations by about 24%, citing Fisk and Chan (2017). These figures describe particle concentrations in particular scenarios, not a guaranteed result for every home or HVAC system.
Can you make a box-fan air cleaner?
When a portable cleaner is unavailable, EPA describes a 20-by-20-inch MERV 13 filter paired with a newer certified box fan as a cost-effective smoke-cleaning option. A cardboard shroud, thicker filter, or multiple filters can improve performance. This is an emergency option rather than a replacement for a properly sized commercial cleaner.

- Use a newer certified fan and a correctly sized filter.
- Follow the fan and filter makers’ instructions and applicable safety guidance.
- Do not leave a DIY unit unattended.
The available guidance does not establish a single DIY configuration that is suitable for every fan, filter, room, or building. Do not improvise around damaged equipment or disregard the fan manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Choose a method by the pollutant and the space

These particle-focused options do not resolve every indoor air concern. Gases, excess moisture, radon, and carbon monoxide require pollutant-specific controls, testing, or professional help; a particle cleaner should not be treated as a solution for them.
