Short answer: Google supports simultaneous temperature averaging on the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). It can combine readings from multiple Nest Temperature Sensors and control one HVAC system from their average. The basic Nest Thermostat does not support Nest Temperature Sensors, while the 3rd-generation Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E can use a remote sensor only one at a time.
Google’s current documentation confirms the capability, but does not establish a specific August 2026 rollout or firmware update. “Finally” should therefore be read as a description of the feature’s arrival on this model, not as a verified release date.
What multi-sensor averaging actually does
There are three different Nest sensor behaviors that are easy to confuse:
One active sensor
On compatible older models, you choose one remote sensor to control the thermostat. The selected room matters; other sensor readings do not contribute to the control temperature.

Scheduled sensor selection
You can use different rooms at different times—for example, a bedroom overnight and a living room during the day. This changes which single reading controls each scheduled event.
Several sensors averaged
On the 4th-generation Learning Thermostat, selecting multiple sensors makes Google use their average temperature. If the living room is 68°F and the bedroom is 72°F, the control average is 70°F. The thermostat still sends one heating or cooling signal to one HVAC system; it does not independently heat or cool each room.
Google describes an arithmetic temperature average, not weighting based on room size, occupancy, square footage, or time spent in a room. The Google Home app may also show the thermostat itself alongside remote sensors in the selection screen, so check the readings presented for your particular installation before assuming which sensors are included.

Which Nest thermostats support it?

How to enable averaging in Google Home
Select sensors for a scheduled event
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select your Nest thermostat.
- Tap Schedules.
- Open an existing schedule event or tap Add event.
- Find Using sensors.
- Select two or more available sensors, then save the event.
Google says that when more than one sensor is selected, the 4th-generation Learning Thermostat uses their average temperature. Selected sensors should appear in the thermostat’s sensor list with check marks.
Associate sensors with the thermostat
- Open Google Home and tap Home.
- Tap Climate, then choose the thermostat.
- Tap Sensors and choose Associated sensors.
- Select the sensors and tap Save.
Up to six sensors can be associated with one thermostat, but association is not the same as simultaneous averaging: older compatible models can have several associated sensors while using only one at a time. Instructions: Google Home sensor schedules and sensor association limits.

Place sensors where their readings are useful
Google recommends placing a sensor in a room where people spend substantial time, about chest height, and within 50 feet (15 meters) of the thermostat. Walls, floors, appliances, furniture, and electronics can reduce that range.

- Do not hide it behind artwork or books, or inside an enclosed space.
- Avoid unusually hot or cold locations such as attics, basements, or poorly insulated rooms unless that room is deliberately the control priority.
- In a zoned HVAC system, keep the sensor within the zone controlled by its associated thermostat.

Average, prioritize, or install true zoning?
Choose averaging when
- Several commonly occupied rooms should be approximately the same temperature.
- The thermostat is in a hallway or stairwell that does not represent living conditions.
- Temperature differences are moderate and you want a compromise between rooms.
- You want a living area and bedroom represented together rather than letting one room dominate.
Choose one-room priority or scheduled switching when
- A bedroom, nursery, or office matters most at a particular time.
- Different rooms take priority during the day and night.
- One room needs a deliberately different comfort target.
Use real HVAC zoning for independent temperatures
Averaging cannot make one room 68°F while another remains 74°F. Independent simultaneous temperatures require separately controlled HVAC zones, with appropriate dampers and controls. If the root problem is poor duct balancing, insulation, solar gain, or an undersized system, additional sensors may only make the system run longer.

Comfort and energy trade-offs
A remote sensor can improve the room it represents while making another room less comfortable. A sensor in a markedly hotter, colder, draftier, or poorly insulated room can pull the average away from the rest of the house. Google also warns that remote-sensor use can increase average energy consumption because the HVAC system may run longer to satisfy the selected readings; the system can issue an alert when operation appears excessive.

Troubleshooting when the option is missing or comfort gets worse
The multi-sensor option is not shown
- Identify the thermostat model. The basic Nest Thermostat cannot use these sensors; the 3rd-generation Learning Thermostat and Thermostat E do not average several at once.
- Confirm the sensor is associated with the thermostat.
- Use the Google Home app and the documented schedule path, rather than assuming the Nest app exposes the same controls.
- Check that the sensor is online and within reliable wireless range.
- Update the app and thermostat if updates are available.
- Check account and regional availability; Google’s cited compatibility information specifically covers the US and Canada.
A sensor is offline
Check its connection in Google Home, move it closer to the thermostat, remove likely interference, and replace the battery if the app reports low power. Reassociate or reconnect it if necessary, then verify the active-sensor list. Google says the thermostat can fall back to its internal sensors when a remote sensor disconnects. The system runs longer or rooms feel worse
Review each sensor’s location first: sun, drafts, vents, exterior walls, and a room outside the thermostat’s HVAC zone can bias the average. Then consider whether the HVAC system can actually deliver enough heating or cooling to the selected rooms. If not, duct balancing, air sealing, insulation work, or true zoning is a better remedy than adding sensors.
Should you upgrade or buy more sensors?
The 4th-generation Learning Thermostat is the relevant upgrade
If simultaneous multi-room averaging is the deciding feature, the 4th-generation Learning Thermostat is the Nest model Google documents for it. Google’s Store page lists one 2nd-generation Nest Temperature Sensor in the box and support for up to six associated sensors: official product page. Indexed Google Store pages have shown a regular price of $279.99 and a temporary promotional price of $239.99; verify the live price before purchase.
Check HVAC compatibility before installation, especially with heat pumps, radiant systems, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, unusual wiring, or multiple zones. Google provides compatibility checking and professional-installation options on the product page.
Additional sensors make sense only for comparable priorities
Buy extra Nest Temperature Sensors when several rooms genuinely need representation and the wiring, airflow, and insulation are already sound. Google’s product page identifies one- and three-pack accessory options, but a reliable current standalone sensor price is not established here.
When not to buy this feature
Do not buy the basic Nest Thermostat expecting an update to add sensor support; Google lists it as incompatible. Indexed Store pages have shown $129.99 regular and $99.99 promotional pricing, but those figures can change. If rooms require different temperatures at the same time, invest in HVAC zoning rather than trying to make an average behave like separate controls.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Multi-sensor averaging is real on the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), not on the basic Nest Thermostat, and not on older models that allow only one active sensor. It is useful for balancing several similarly important rooms, but it cannot fix airflow, insulation, wiring, or zoning problems.
