At the reported $34.99 sale price, the original Blink Video Doorbell was a compelling low-cost way to get basic front-door video and alerts. But that was a historical deal reported on May 21, 2025—not a price confirmed today. As of August 18, 2026, the Amazon listing for that model, ASIN B08SGC46M9, was unavailable. Its value also depends on whether you are willing to accept Blink’s limits on recording, live view, batteries and Wi-Fi.
Which Blink doorbell was the $35 deal?
The deal was for the original Blink Video Doorbell, not necessarily the newer Video Doorbell (2nd Gen). Android Headlines reported the original doorbell at $34.99, reduced from a stated $69.99 regular price, on May 21, 2025. The article called it an all-time low; that characterization is the deal site’s claim, not an independently established price-history record. What you get from the original model
The original Video Doorbell provides 1080p HD video, live view, two-way audio, motion and doorbell-press notifications, Alexa compatibility, and day- and night-time video. It can be installed wire-free or connected to compatible existing doorbell wiring. These specifications make it plausible as a basic way to see who is at the door; 1080p alone does not establish premium image quality, reliable package detail, or strong low-light performance. Wire-free installation
Wire-free operation uses two AA 1.5-volt lithium non-rechargeable batteries. It avoids relying on existing doorbell wiring, which can suit renters or homes without compatible wiring, but it means budgeting for replacement batteries and depending on app notifications or a separately arranged indoor alert.

Wired installation
Compatible existing doorbell wiring can power the installation and may allow the existing in-home chime to ring. Compatibility depends on the home’s wiring and setup; wiring does not turn the device into a continuously recording camera. Check Blink’s installation guidance before connecting it.
The ownership catches to weigh before buying
Basic operation is not the same as recorded history
Live view, motion alerts and two-way audio can work without a subscription. Cloud video recording is different: it requires a paid plan after any applicable trial. Local recording avoids a recurring cloud fee, but it is not built into the doorbell. For the original model, Blink’s local-storage route uses a Sync Module 2 and a compatible USB flash drive, both additional hardware considerations; the drive is sold separately. A Sync Module changes how live view works
The original doorbell can operate without a Sync Module, but that setup limits event response: Blink says you can access live view and two-way audio by tapping a motion or doorbell notification within 60 seconds of receiving it. Pairing with a Sync Module allows on-demand live view and audio, and Blink says it can extend battery life and provide additional features. Two years is an upper-limit battery claim
Blink describes up to two years of battery life under default settings and normal use when the doorbell is paired with a Sync Module. That is not a guarantee: frequent motion events and live views, weak Wi-Fi, cold temperatures and settings can reduce battery life. Wi-Fi and chime arrangements matter
The doorbell relies on Wi-Fi and the Blink app, so a weak connection can mean delayed alerts or failed live views and may increase battery use. For Sync Module 2 systems, Blink specifies always-on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and at least 2 Mbps upload speed from the network to the internet. A wire-free installation should not be assumed to ring a conventional indoor chime; check the supported chime options for your setup.

What setup involves
Blink’s setup instructions give this sequence for the original model:
- Install two AA 1.5-volt lithium non-rechargeable batteries.
- In the Blink app, tap Add device + in the upper-right corner.
- Scan the doorbell’s QR code, then choose an existing system or create one.
- Connect the app to the doorbell’s temporary BLINK network.
- Connect the doorbell to your home Wi-Fi and finish the in-app setup.
- Mount the doorbell after setup is complete.
Use the Blink setup guide and confirm wiring compatibility before choosing a wired installation.
Who the original doorbell suits—and who should skip it
It may suit you if
- You want an inexpensive camera and alerts for one entry point, rather than whole-home coverage.
- 1080p video and event-based monitoring are enough for your needs.
- You already use Alexa or Blink devices, or you are comfortable choosing between a cloud plan and extra local-storage hardware.
- You can accept battery maintenance or have compatible existing doorbell wiring.
Look elsewhere if
- You want continuous recording, reliable recording through internet outages, or a local-first setup without a proprietary hub.
- You need high-resolution video, a wide vertical view, dependable package detail, or advanced person, vehicle or package recognition from the doorbell itself.
- You do not want to manage batteries, subscriptions, extra storage hardware or model-specific chime arrangements.
- You expect one doorbell camera to function as a complete home security system.
How to compare alternatives
Compare the exact generation and storage rules, not just the sticker price. Current prices and model features are not established here, so check the manufacturer’s current product details before choosing.
