A workable low-cost tabletop spray booth needs three things: an enclosure that contains overspray, replaceable filter media, and fan-driven extraction that sends the captured air somewhere safe. You can make the enclosure from foam board or similar rigid sheet material, but a homemade booth is not automatically certified, explosion-proof, or suitable for every paint. Treat the design below as a compact overspray-control project, then match the fan, filter, exhaust route and personal protection to the coating’s label and safety data sheet.
What a tabletop booth can—and cannot—do
The booth’s practical job is to keep paint mist from settling across your work area and to move contaminated air away from your breathing zone. It does not prove that solvent vapor, toxic constituents or combustible atmospheres have been made safe. The Paasche HSSB-22-16 manual states that its booth “will not remove all hazardous material from the air” and directs users to the coating label and safety data sheet (Paasche manual, revision 2011-08-31).
A filter catches overspray particles; it should not be described as a universal vapor filter. Carbon media, where used, also cannot be assumed to eliminate solvent exposure. Water-based products may reduce some hazards, but they still require ventilation and the controls specified for the particular product. WorkSafe Queensland lists water-based paint as one control option and recommends local exhaust, fresh air and suitable respiratory protection in workplace guidance; legal requirements depend on your location and coating (WorkSafe Queensland).
A simple layout that is easy to build
Arrange the parts in this order:
- Open-front enclosure: Make it large enough for the model, your hands and the spray angle you actually use. Keep the workpiece clear of the filter so it cannot touch or block it.
- Replaceable overspray filter: Put filter media behind the model, spanning the extraction opening. Use media intended for spray-booth overspray and make replacement straightforward.
- Collection space or plenum: Leave an air-collection space behind the filter when the selected fan or booth layout calls for one. A fan pulling directly against a blocked sheet of filter can lose useful airflow.
- Fan and duct connection: Mount the extraction fan on the clean-air side of the filter where the design permits, then connect ducting with sealed joints. The final outlet must not discharge into a room where people can inhale the exhaust.
Foam board and 3D-printed parts are used in one published miniature-booth plan from 3D Venting LLC. Its page advertises required ventilation fans and a price “for as little as $25 USD,” but that is a vendor estimate dependent on sourcing, printed parts and what you already own—not an independently priced bill of materials or a verified performance result (3D Venting LLC plans).

Build the enclosure around the workpiece
Measure the largest miniature or small model you intend to spray, including the handle, turntable or temporary stand. Add room for the spray path and for your hands to work without brushing the walls. Use a stable base and reinforce corners so vibration from the fan does not tip the booth. Avoid materials that soften, melt or react with the coating and keep paper, foam and other combustible items away from flammable spray products.
Make the filter serviceable
Use a retaining frame, clips or a gasketed panel so the filter can be removed without dismantling the booth. Mark the airflow direction if the media has one. As the filter loads, resistance rises and extraction falls; OSHA’s ventilation guidance ties cleaning or replacement to pressure drop or loss of booth-face airflow and says filter ratings should be based on manufacturer test data (OSHA 1910.94). In a hobby booth without instruments, inspect the media frequently and replace it when visibly loaded, damaged or when capture clearly worsens.

Provide a real exhaust path
Short, smooth ducting with few bends generally creates less resistance than a long, crushed or sharply bent run. Size the connection to the fan and adapter rather than assuming that a familiar hose size will work. Route exhaust outdoors only where the outlet location will not send contaminated air back through a window, door, intake or occupied area. Never treat recirculating room air as equivalent to outdoor exhaust for solvent-containing products.

Shop by the assembled system, not by the fan’s headline rating. Compare these points before buying:

A Paasche HSSB-22-16 example is listed at 235 CFM and uses a 4-inch dryer-duct adapter. Those are specifications for that named commercial unit, not targets that can be transferred to a homemade booth (Paasche manual).
Assembly sequence
- Cut and brace the enclosure panels, leaving the front open and the rear sized for the selected filter area.
- Install a removable filter frame behind the work zone. Seal obvious bypass gaps so air is pulled through the media rather than around it.
- Add the rear plenum or collection space required by your fan arrangement.
- Mount the fan securely on the extraction side and attach compatible ducting. Keep wiring, switches and the motor away from wet spray and spills.
- Support the duct so its weight does not pull the booth apart. Check every joint for collapse, leaks and sharp edges.
- Run a non-spray airflow check: confirm air is drawn from the open front toward the filter and that the filter is not bowing or bypassed.
- Label the booth with the approved coating types, filter-change procedure and the exhaust destination. Keep the coating’s safety data sheet accessible.
This sequence is a general synthesis of the cited miniature-booth plan, manufacturer instructions and ventilation principles, not a source-verified construction drawing. Do not claim a particular airflow, capture efficiency or regulatory compliance without measurement and an appropriate engineering assessment.

Using the booth safely
Check the coating before spraying
- Read the product label and safety data sheet for flammability, vapor hazards, ventilation, respirator and waste requirements.
- Do not spray flammable materials in an atmosphere containing ignition sources or in a booth whose fan and electrical parts are not rated for that hazard. The Paasche manual warns against explosive atmospheres and flammable materials.
- Keep the booth away from candles, heaters, sparks, pilot flames and incompatible chemicals.
- Wear the PPE specified for the product; a booth is not a substitute for respiratory, eye or skin protection.
Ventilate during and after spraying
OSHA’s spray-finishing rule requires ventilation while spraying and long enough afterward for drying emissions to be exhausted. Its covered conventional dry-booth provisions specify an average open-face velocity of at least 100 linear feet per minute (OSHA 1910.107). That is a workplace regulatory figure, not a tested target for this tabletop project, and a generic consumer fan cannot be labeled compliant from the number alone.

Turn off the system before changing media, bag used filters as directed by the coating’s waste instructions and clean accumulated residue before it becomes a fire or contamination problem. The Paasche manual recommends frequent filter changes, outside venting where needed and proper waste handling (Paasche manual).

When a DIY booth is the wrong choice
Choose a commercially engineered or professionally designed system—or stop and obtain specialist advice—when you use highly flammable or strongly solvent-based coatings, spray large quantities, need documented exposure control, cannot exhaust outdoors safely, or work in a shared space where other people may be exposed. A small booth can be convenient for occasional miniature work, but convenience does not establish compliance, adequate capture or protection from hazardous vapor.
