How to choose the right kitchen trash-can size
Measure the space before comparing gallons

Manual lids
Manual operation is mechanically simple and avoids batteries, but it requires touching the lid. It can suit a low-traffic prep area where simplicity matters more than hands-free use.

Bag compatibility is a daily usability issue, not an accessory detail. Check the manufacturer’s liner recommendation, rim dimensions and retaining system. A liner should insert without fighting the lid hinges, stay anchored when heavy and lift out without tearing. Brabantia’s cited 30-liter NewIcon specifically lists PerfectFit Code G bags; that specification applies to that variant, not every NewIcon size: Brabantia NewIcon specifications.

Cleaning and odor control are separate tests
Cleaning
A removable inner bucket lets you wash the part most likely to collect leaks. Also inspect the lid underside, hinge area and rim for seams that trap residue.
Odor
“Odor-proof” or similar wording is a manufacturer claim, not independent proof. Look for evidence that distinguishes odor inside the can from odor escaping into the room. Which? says its testing evaluates both: Which?’s kitchen-bin testing overview.

For construction, inspect exterior material, pedal or sensor mounting, hinge alignment and the inner bucket. A metal shell can resist dents better than thin plastic, while plastic may weigh less and avoid fingerprints; neither material alone proves long-term reliability.

- Measure the available footprint, height and lid clearance.
- Choose a capacity that matches how quickly your household fills a bag.
- Select pedal, sensor or manual opening based on placement, battery tolerance and hand-free needs.
- Confirm liner dimensions or the stated bag code for the exact model.
- Check whether the inner bucket removes and whether the rim secures the bag.
- Read odor and quiet-close language as product claims unless independent testing supports them.
- Look for warranty or guarantee terms, then verify what parts and failures they cover.
What the available reviews can—and cannot—prove
Which? describes a broad test program covering cleaning, durability, usability, secure bag fit, odor control, lid operation, fingerprint resistance and capacity relative to footprint. Consumer Reports’ accessible search listing is dated 5 August 2026 and names evaluated models, but its article was blocked, so no scores or conclusions can be transferred here: Consumer Reports listing.
Manufacturer pages remain useful for dimensions, capacities and warranty terms. For example, the cited Brabantia page gives 67.9 cm height, 38 cm length and 29.3 cm width for its 30-liter NewIcon variant, while Simplehuman’s page lists the Slim Step options and warranty: Simplehuman Slim Step Can.
