To preserve flowers in a frame, first decide whether you want a flat picture or a dimensional keepsake. Press flowers for a flat frame; dry blooms in silica gel for a shadow box. The right method prevents a full-shaped flower from being crushed, while careful spacing and display help protect the finished piece.
Choose a drying method that suits the frame

UF/IFAS Extension describes silica gel as “the fastest-acting drying agent available” and says plant materials dried in it retain good color. That is a comparison of drying agents, not a guaranteed drying time or promise that every flower will keep its original color. Flower type and setup affect drying, so follow the silica-gel product directions and check the specimen rather than relying on a universal schedule. Make a flat pressed-flower picture
Press the flowers
Arrange flowers in a flower press and leave them until they are dry and flat. A press suits delicate or naturally flatter specimens; thick, rounded blooms will be flattened rather than preserved in their original form.

- Cover a piece of cardboard or other suitable backing with fabric or paper.
- Sketch the arrangement, then place the pressed flowers on the backing.
- Glue the flowers in position and let the adhesive dry.
- Place the composition in a picture frame, using a mat or spacers to keep the flowers from touching the glass or acrylic.

Dry dimensional flowers for a shadow box
Use silica gel
Silica gel is the cited home-drying option when retaining more of a bloom’s natural form is the goal. Follow the product’s instructions for the flower and container you are using; the extension guidance does not give one drying duration that applies to every specimen.
Arrange with enough clearance
Place the dry blooms in a shadow box deep enough that petals and foliage are not compressed. Keep the flower from touching the glazing. A thick enough mat or perimeter spacers can create clearance between the contents and the glass or acrylic.

Choose framing materials and a display location
For a more careful frame package, the Library of Congress recommends conservation-minded materials such as suitable mat board, stable backing, UV-opaque glazing and a frame deep enough for the contents. A home craft need not claim museum-grade permanence to use the practical principles: choose stable materials where the flowers touch, leave room around them and limit exposure to strong light.
