Olive green pairs especially well with cream, beige, taupe, brown, blush pink, red, terracotta, blue, yellow, and other greens. For a quieter room, start with warm neutrals or natural materials; for more contrast, add a deliberate accent such as muted red, blue, or golden yellow. The right choice depends on the particular olive’s undertone and how much of each color you use.
What colors go with olive green?
Olive can act as a grounding color in a room, but it is not one fixed shade: some olives read more yellow-brown, while others appear darker or more muted. The pairings below reflect designer-led examples and recommendations reported by ELLE Decor, Homes & Gardens, Apartment Therapy, and Livingetc. They are qualitative design guidance, not measured rules; compare colors with the actual paint, tile, or fabric you plan to use.
1. Cream and warm white
Cream and warm white create an easy, light counterpoint to olive without the starkness that can come from a cooler white. Try them on walls beside olive tile, or in bedding and trim when olive is used on a larger surface. Apartment Therapy describes warm white walls alongside olive tile, while Homes & Gardens recommends cream as a soft, warm companion.

Beige keeps the palette restrained while adding warmth. Use it for upholstery, bedding, or a larger backdrop beside olive walls or cabinetry. ELLE Decor shows an olive-walled room with a beige-draped bed; Homes & Gardens also includes beige among its recommended light neutrals.

3. Taupe
Taupe is a quiet earthy partner for olive upholstery or walls. To keep the combination from feeling flat, vary the materials: textured linen, wood, or stone can add visible contrast without introducing another strong hue. Livingetc describes taupe alongside olive in a restrained, earthy scheme.
4. Brown
Brown reinforces olive’s natural, grounded character. Consider dark leather, timber, rattan, or chocolate-brown upholstery; a dark brown sofa, for example, can anchor a room with an olive ceiling or walls. Homes & Gardens and Livingetc both feature brown materials in olive interiors.
5. Blush or washed-out pink
Blush and washed-out pink soften olive and bring a lighter counterpoint, whether used on walls, textiles, or smaller accents. Homes & Gardens shows blush walls with dark olive cabinetry. Livingetc’s designers favor moody or washed-out pinks over bubble-gum pink for a more timeless effect.

6. Red
Red brings high contrast. Cherry, brick, and burgundy are among the options shown in designer-led examples: Homes & Gardens pairs cherry-red chairs with olive walls, and Apartment Therapy features brick red with an olive canopy. Livingetc cautions that red and green can look holiday-themed if the balance is unintentional; muted reds and a clear lead color help the pairing feel considered.
7. Orange or terracotta
Burnt orange and terracotta add warm, earthy energy. Use them in bedding or an accent wall when olive is on a bed or sofa, rather than automatically giving both colors equal visual weight. ELLE Decor features burnt-orange bedding with an olive bed, while Apartment Therapy shows peachy terracotta walls with an olive sofa.
8. Blue
Blue provides a cooler contrast to olive. Blue-gray can feel restrained, while indigo adds more depth; blue-green is another option for a fresh, earthy palette. ELLE Decor shows blue-gray cabinetry with olive walls and indigo pillows against an olive sofa. Livingetc also recommends blue as a companion.

9. Yellow or gold
Mustard or golden yellow can bring energy as an accent; gold upholstery makes a more dramatic statement. Apartment Therapy describes gold offsetting olive, and Livingetc includes warm yellow accents in olive schemes. Choose the scale deliberately: a small accent and a large upholstered piece will affect the room differently.
10. Other greens
Layering green creates a tonal palette rather than a sharp contrast. Homes & Gardens recommends shades including jade, forest, and sage. Livingetc distinguishes olive’s warmer, more yellow-brown character from sage’s gray-blue undertone, so check the specific greens together instead of assuming they will blend automatically.
How to choose a pairing for your room
Start with the olive you actually have
Look at the olive paint, fabric, or tile beside your intended companion color in the room where it will be used. The undertone matters: Livingetc describes olive as warmer and more yellow-brown than sage, which tends gray-blue. A sample that seems balanced in isolation may read differently next to the other fixed finishes in the space.

Decide whether the room should feel quiet or energetic
- Grounded and restrained: cream, beige, taupe, or brown.
- Softened: blush or washed-out pink.
- Cooler or fresher: blue, including blue-gray or indigo.
- More energetic: red, orange, terracotta, or yellow.
- Tonal: another green, selected for its undertone.
These are designer-described effects, not guarantees; the amount of each color and the materials around it also shape the result.
Use contrast with a clear lead color
When choosing a bold pair such as olive and red, decide which color should dominate and let the other play a supporting role. This is especially useful when both hues appear in large areas. Muted reds can help avoid an unintended holiday-like effect, according to Livingetc’s guidance.
Where to bring in the second color
Olive-and-companion palettes can be introduced through walls, cabinetry, upholstery, bedding, pillows, art, tile, or wallpaper. You do not need to put both colors on large surfaces: an accent textile, chair, or finish can supply contrast while leaving olive as the room’s main color. Wood, linen, aged brass, stone, and woven materials are additional ways to build warmth and visual depth, as described by Apartment Therapy and Livingetc.

How finish and texture change the result
Color is only one part of the scheme. Varying texture—such as linen beside wood, or stone beside woven materials—helps related earthy colors remain distinct. For a color-drenched room, Apartment Therapy reports a designer suggestion to combine matte walls with satin trim. Livingetc reports that flat or matte finishes suit a modern look, while some sheen can suit a more traditional interior. Treat these as stylistic options rather than universal rules; consider the room’s other surfaces and the finish you want.
A bolder extra: purple
Purple is a documented alternative beyond these ten pairings. ELLE Decor describes jewel-toned purple bench fabric beside olive-painted staircase railings. Because that example uses a concentrated jewel tone rather than a broad neutral, it is a useful option when the room calls for a more pronounced accent.
