To hang curtains neatly and securely, decide where the hem should land, choose an inside or outside mount, measure for the rod and panel heading together, then mark level brackets and fasten them for the wall type and curtain load. Check the rod maker’s span and weight guidance before adding a center support; rules of thumb differ by guide.
Choose the mount and finished look
Decide first whether the rod will sit outside the window frame or inside the jamb. An outside mount lets you extend the curtains beyond the frame to expose more glass when open. An inside mount depends on jamb depth and bracket geometry; don’t reuse outside-mount measurements for it. The Home Depot’s curtain-hanging guide describes locating the center of the jamb and allowing room for the bracket.
Choose the intended hem position before setting rod height. A light floor graze is one styling option, not a requirement; curtains may instead stop above the floor or finish at another point that suits the room and panel. Keep the curtain panels and rod hardware on hand while measuring: a pocket, tabs, grommets, rings, or hooks can change where the fabric hangs relative to the rod.
Plan rod width and panel length together
Set the rod coverage
For an outside mount, measure the frame, then decide how far the open curtains should extend on each side. Guides offer different design examples rather than a universal rule:

Choose based on the window, desired light and view, available wall space, and where the brackets can go. Account for finials and bracket placement when selecting rod length; the listed extension is not necessarily the rod’s overall end-to-end length.
Measure the finished drop
Pick the hem position, then measure from it to the panel’s actual hanging point. Check the heading and hardware: the fabric may start below the rod, and rings or hooks can add length. Use the panel’s finished-length information and the actual rod or ring arrangement rather than assuming the fabric begins at the rod centerline.

Mark bracket positions
For an outside mount, about four inches above the frame is one styling example from Pottery Barn. The Home Depot gives 4–6 inches above the frame as an example for a taller-looking placement. Neither is a required standard: choose a height that works with the planned drop, ceiling and trim constraints, and bracket geometry.

- Use the selected rod length and bracket layout to mark the left and right bracket positions. Confirm each mark leaves room for the rod, finials, and any nearby trim.
- Measure to corresponding points on both sides and use a level to align the marks. A level helps avoid a tilted rod even if the window trim itself is not level.
- Before drilling, hold or compare the rod and panels against the planned positions. Recheck the finished drop and the clearance needed for the curtains to open.
Fasten brackets for the wall and load
Locate studs at the planned bracket positions with a stud finder. If a bracket can shift slightly onto framing without compromising the layout, direct fastening into the stud may be possible. If a bracket cannot land on framing, choose an anchor suitable for the wall material and expected load. Anchors are not interchangeable: follow the anchor and rod manufacturers’ instructions for fastener type, pilot-hole size, and installation.

Before drilling, check for concealed wiring and pipes and follow the instructions for your drill, rod, and mounting hardware. The guides do not establish one anchor type for every wall, so select hardware for the actual substrate and curtain load rather than relying on a generic plastic anchor.
Decide whether the rod needs a center support
Long spans and heavier curtains can need a center bracket to reduce sag, but published rules of thumb differ. Wayfair says a window wider than four feet needs at least three brackets; This Old House notes that delicate rods or rods longer than four feet may need a center bracket; Home Depot advises one for long rods or heavyweight curtains. Treat these as guide-specific recommendations, not universal thresholds. Check the rod maker’s span and load requirements for your rod and curtains.

Hang the panels and test the installation
- Attach panels according to their heading and product instructions: thread the rod through a pocket or grommets, set tabs over it, or attach the rings and hooks as designed.
- Seat the rod in its brackets and secure it as the hardware specifies. Tighten any set screws if present, then replace the finials.
- Open and close the curtains. Check that they move freely and clear trim, furniture, and nearby hardware.
- If the rod shifts or sags, recheck that it is level and that the brackets are tight. Revisit the rod maker’s span and load directions if support appears insufficient.
What to have ready
- Rod, brackets, and panels: Select them together based on window coverage, bracket depth, panel heading, finished drop, and curtain weight.
- Tape measure and level: Use them to measure the drop and align the bracket marks.
- Stud finder and drill: Useful for locating framing and making pilot holes; check for utilities before drilling.
- Screws or wall anchors: Match the wall construction and expected load, and follow their maker’s installation instructions.
