The most reliable way to keep squirrels away depends on where they are causing damage. For bird feeders, a baffle or suitable pole setup is a practical first step. For a building, find the entry points and make sure squirrels have left before sealing them. For plants, a label-approved repellent may be worth trying, but homemade scent remedies are not established as dependable fixes.
Choose a method for the squirrel problem
First identify what squirrels are reaching: birdseed, plants, or a building. Where practical, reduce the food, water, or shelter attracting wildlife. A repellent aimed at a garden will not keep squirrels out of an attic, and a feeder baffle will not protect plants.

What natural squirrel repellents are worth trying?
Capsaicin: a possible deterrent, not a guarantee
Capsaicin, the hot-pepper ingredient, is the best-supported natural-repellent option in the cited extension guidance. It may deter feeding through scent or taste aversion, but the outcome depends on conditions such as available competing food, the animal’s prior feeding behavior, plant growth stage, and reapplication. Rain and dew can wash off some spray-on treatments. UF IFAS Extension discusses those variables, while Penn State Extension lists capsaicin among taste repellents for certain crop uses.

Other homemade remedies
Garlic, essential oils, vinegar, predator urine, soap, and homemade pepper sprays are not established by the cited sources as reliable squirrel controls. Do not assume that a strong smell or an ingredient used in a commercial wildlife product makes a DIY treatment effective or safe for every surface, animal, or setting.
Why mothballs are not a squirrel repellent
Do not put mothballs in an attic, garden, or other open space to deter squirrels. NPIC says mothballs are not meant for animal repellency, have little or no effect as repellents, and can expose people and animals to pesticide vapors when used outside the labeled setting. Use pesticide products only for the pest, place, and application method stated on the label. A product marketed as a repellent is not automatically approved for every animal or location.
Keep squirrels out of a building safely
For a building, exclusion—blocking access—is more central than masking odors. Penn State Extension describes blocking entrances as the most effective way to control squirrel damage. Use repellents with realistic expectations
- Check the product label for the intended pest, site, and application method before use.
- Keep products away from children, pets, and non-target wildlife as the label directs; do not leave pesticides open or unsecured.
- Expect some treatments to lose effectiveness after rain or dew, and follow label instructions for any reapplication.
- Address the attractant or access route as well as any feeding damage; a scent treatment alone may not solve the underlying problem.
