The Hoymiles MS-A2 is a 2.24 kWh AC-coupled battery designed mainly for small, European balcony-solar systems. It can store power from a microinverter or the grid and deliver up to 800 VA through its on-grid or off-grid output. It is not a whole-home backup system, and its 230 V, 50 Hz, Schuko specification makes it a poor assumption for buyers in the United States or other markets with different electrical standards.
What the Hoymiles MS-A2 is—and how AC coupling works
The MS-A2 stores electricity on the AC side of a solar system. Solar panels produce DC electricity, a microinverter converts it to AC, and the MS-A2 takes in AC power to charge its internal battery. It can later deliver stored energy through an on-grid connection or a separate off-grid output. Hoymiles markets the unit for balcony and small PV systems, and says it works with mainstream microinverters rather than requiring one of its own. Hoymiles MS-A2 product page
Because it connects on the AC side, the MS-A2 may suit an existing microinverter installation without replacing the inverter. The trade-off is additional conversion between solar panels, AC power and battery storage; losses mean the energy delivered will be less than the nominal amount stored. Actual benefit also depends on household loads, export rules and the battery’s controls.

MS-A2 specifications
The figures below are published by Hoymiles for the European MS-A2. Nominal capacity is not the same as usable capacity, and apparent power in VA is not interchangeable with a guaranteed wattage for every load.

Specifications are from the Hoymiles European MS-A2 datasheet and Hoymiles brochure. Hoymiles lists European grid standards including VDE-AR-N 4105 and EN 50549-1/-10; those references are not proof of approval for every country.
Capacity, output and the loads it can support
Capacity describes stored energy; output describes how much power the system can provide at a given moment. The 2.24 kWh figure does not mean the MS-A2 can run a 2.24 kW appliance. Its published on-grid and off-grid outputs are each 800 VA, with the off-grid port reaching 1,200 VA only for a 10-second peak. These limits matter for appliances with heating elements or motors, which can demand substantial power, especially at startup.
Small electronics, lights and networking equipment are more plausible off-grid loads, provided their combined demand stays within the rating. Do not assume a refrigerator will work without checking its running and startup requirements against the MS-A2’s limits. The manual warns that exceeding the output rating can cause fire or injury. As a rough illustration only, 2.24 kWh divided by a constant 100 W load is 22.4 hours before conversion losses and any reserve capacity. It is not a runtime promise: usable capacity and actual load behavior determine the result. The published product information does not establish the usable capacity.
Microinverter compatibility: check the exact model
Hoymiles says the MS-A2 is compatible with mainstream microinverters. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that every current, older or imported model will operate correctly. Non-Hoymiles units may be compatible, but buyers should confirm the exact model and connection method before ordering.
- Electrical: Confirm system voltage and frequency match the local MS-A2 version and installation.
- Physical: Check that the required plug-and-play cable and connectors are available for the microinverter.
- Control: Verify that the MS-A2 can detect and manage the inverter’s output in the intended operating mode.
- Grid and support: Check local anti-islanding and export requirements, and ask Hoymiles whether it will troubleshoot a third-party inverter.
Compatibility for an on-grid configuration does not automatically establish how a system will behave off-grid. Confirm both modes if both matter to your installation.
European specifications and the US question
The published MS-A2 datasheet describes a European-oriented unit: 230 V, 50 Hz, Schuko connection and European grid-compliance references. A US-facing Hoymiles marketing page does not establish that this version supports North American 120 V/60 Hz circuits, carries the necessary local certification, or may legally be connected to a particular utility system. US buyers—and buyers elsewhere outside the specified market—should get written confirmation from Hoymiles or a local distributor on voltage, frequency, connector, certification, utility rules, warranty and service before considering purchase. Do not use an adapter to bridge an unresolved electrical or certification mismatch.
Installation: what the manual’s plug-and-play sequence entails
The manual describes a connection sequence, but that does not remove the need to meet local electrical requirements. It calls for grounding and recommends a type-B residual-current device or residual-current monitor on the supply side. Check outlet and circuit ratings, protection, weather exposure, building rules and utility requirements; use a qualified installer where required. Do not improvise with modified cables or unapproved attachments.
- Disconnect the microinverter system from the grid, shade or isolate the solar panels, and turn off the MS-A2.
- Inspect the unit, cables, plugs and connectors for damage. Unplug the microinverter system from its socket.
- Insert the microinverter plug-and-play cable into the MS-A2’s AC Off-Grid cable entry and confirm the connector clicks into place.
- Insert the MS-A2 plug-and-play cable into its AC On-Grid cable entry, then plug the other end into the grid socket.
- Power on the MS-A2 and complete setup in the app.
For normal startup, the manual says to hold the power button for about two seconds; the status indicator blinks white during startup. If the unit is not connected to the grid, it says to hold the button for eight seconds. Follow the manual for the exact installation and safety requirements rather than treating these steps as a substitute for them.

App pairing and scheduled output
The manual’s app is called S-Miles Balcony. Menu names can change with app updates, so use the current in-app instructions if a label differs.

- Download S-Miles Balcony from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store, register and log in.
- Go to Devices > Add Devices, enable Bluetooth when prompted, and follow the pairing instructions.
- Open the device page and select the settings icon. To adjust output, go to Device settings > Additional Settings and use the output slider.
- For scheduled delivery, go to Device settings > Home Load Setting > Load Power Curve, select Create, then set power for the required times and days.
The manual says users can set up to seven load curves, with one curve applied per day. If pairing fails, check that the unit is powered, Bluetooth is enabled and the phone is nearby, then reopen Devices > Add Devices and follow the current app prompts. Grid charging and time-of-use shifting
Hoymiles describes charging from solar or the grid and promotes time-of-use operation. Grid charging can save money only when the price spread exceeds the effect of round-trip losses and any applicable fees or restrictions. Export compensation can also make discharging stored grid energy unattractive or impermissible.
A starting estimate is: annual savings = usable energy shifted per day × days used × electricity-price spread × estimated round-trip efficiency. Compare that estimate with purchase, installation, maintenance and eventual replacement costs. It is a calculation framework, not a savings guarantee.

Connecting two MS-A2 units
Hoymiles’ brochure says capacity can be expanded by connecting two units in series, suggesting about 4.48 kWh of combined nominal capacity. The brochure does not establish from that statement alone that output power doubles, or specify every required cable, firmware version and operating condition. Confirm the supported configuration with Hoymiles before planning an expansion.

Outage behavior: off-grid output is not whole-home backup
The MS-A2 has distinct on-grid and off-grid connections. Stored energy, grid-connected energy shifting, a load connected to the off-grid output and automatic transfer to household circuits are different functions. The manual’s separate connection paths do not support treating the MS-A2 as an automatic whole-house backup battery. During an outage, do not assume the on-grid connection will remain energized; determine from the installation instructions which load is connected to the off-grid port and how it is supplied. A professionally designed backup system is a better fit when automatic transfer or support for house circuits is required.
Placement, temperature and weather exposure
The brochure lists wall or floor mounting, operating temperatures of –20°C to 55°C, relative humidity of 5% to 95% and a maximum altitude of 2,000 m. Charging is specified only from 0°C to 55°C, so charging may be restricted below freezing even though discharging is rated down to –20°C. Hoymiles’ US page claims self-heating, but the cited technical information does not fully specify activation conditions, energy use or performance.
IP65 applies to the enclosure except for the standard AC socket. It does not mean the unit is submersible or safe from every form of weather exposure. The manual says to avoid submersion and direct sunlight, and to keep the unit away from fire and flammable or explosive gases. Choose a protected, ventilated location and account for the 32 kg weight when selecting a mounting surface.

Who the MS-A2 suits—and when to look elsewhere
- Consider it if you have a compatible 230 V, 50 Hz microinverter system, want modest AC-coupled storage for self-consumption or tariff shifting, and need off-grid power only for selected loads.
- Look elsewhere if you need whole-home backup, high-wattage appliance support, substantially more stored energy, direct DC coupling, or an electrical system outside the published regional specification.
- Compare alternatives by use case: Hoymiles’ shop currently presents the HiBattery 1920 AC among its balcony and small-PV storage products; a portable power station may suit some emergency loads, while a professionally installed home battery is more appropriate for automatic transfer and larger circuits. These are different system categories, so compare usable capacity, continuous and peak output, local certification, export controls, warranty and service rather than capacity alone.
