HomePod mini’s status light tells you what the speaker is doing, but the motion matters as much as the color: flashing white signals abnormal behavior, while spinning white means the speaker is starting up or updating. Apple documents eight patterns. Identify the pattern before unplugging or resetting the speaker, especially if the light is spinning.
HomePod mini status lights at a glance
Apple’s status-light guide covers HomePod and HomePod mini; the flashing-orange power warning below is specifically for HomePod mini. “Static” means continuously lit, “flashing” repeatedly switches on and off, “pulsing” gradually brightens and dims, and “spinning” travels around the display.

How to tell the white lights apart
Static white: audio is playing
A continuously lit white display means HomePod is playing audio. If the speaker appears to be playing but you hear nothing, Apple’s first suggestion is to raise the volume.

Flashing white: restart before resetting
Flashing white means the speaker is not responding normally. It is not the same as the spinning white light used during startup or a software update. First unplug HomePod mini, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. If it continues flashing, reset it. If flashing remains after a reset, Apple says service may be required.
Pulsing white: ready for setup
A gradually brightening and dimming white light means HomePod is waiting to be set up. Unlock an iPhone or iPad and hold it near the speaker to begin.

Spinning white: startup or software update
A white light moving around the display means HomePod is turning on or updating its software. Keep it connected to power; do not unplug it simply because the ring is spinning. Apple does not specify a universal duration after which a spinning light becomes a fault, so the light alone does not establish that an update is stuck.
What multicolored, orange, green, and red mean
Multicolored: Siri is active
The multicolored display indicates Siri is listening, thinking, or responding. It can appear after a voice request or when you touch and hold the top surface to invoke Siri. It is a normal interaction indicator, not by itself an error.

Flashing orange: check the power source
Apple identifies two causes for flashing orange on HomePod mini: it is connected to a computer, or its power adapter does not meet the required rating of 20W (9V ⎓ 2.22A). Disconnect it from the computer or inadequate adapter and connect it to an appropriate power adapter. Use the original Apple supply if available. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that a charger meets the requirement, and Apple does not guarantee every third-party charger in every configuration.
- Check that the mini is not still connected to a computer.
- Check the adapter’s actual output rating for 20W and 9V ⎓ 2.22A.
- Check that the power cable and adapter are firmly connected.
- If you are using a hub, dock, or other USB source, connect the speaker to a suitable adapter instead.
Flashing orange points first to the computer connection or power supply, not Wi-Fi. Replacing only the cable is not a guaranteed fix because Apple documents both a computer connection and an inadequate adapter as causes.

Pulsing green: a transferred call
A pulsing green light means a phone call has been transferred to HomePod. Continue or end the call using HomePod, the connected device, or the Home app. It does not indicate music playback or a software update.

A spinning red light indicates that HomePod is being reset. During a manual reset, keep holding the top until you hear three beeps. After the reset, set up the speaker again.

What to do if flashing white continues
Use the least disruptive recovery step first, then escalate only if the light persists.
- Restart by power: Unplug HomePod mini, wait 15 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Restart in the Home app, if available: Open Home on an iPhone or iPad, tap the HomePod, then tap the Settings button. For a single HomePod, choose Reset HomePod, then Restart HomePod; for a stereo pair, choose Restart HomePod. Apple’s current HomePod User Guide says these instructions apply to HomePod software version 26 or later. See Apple’s restart instructions.
- Reset if the abnormal flashing remains: Choose a Home app reset or perform a manual reset using the steps below.
- Seek service if flashing persists after reset: Apple says service may be needed. Contact Apple Support about service.
How to reset HomePod mini
A reset is different from a restart. Reset only when the simpler recovery step has not resolved the problem or when you intend to remove and set up the speaker again.
Reset from the Home app
- On an iPhone, iPad, or Mac signed in with the Apple Account used to set up the HomePod, open the Home app.
- Select HomePod mini and open its settings.
- Choose Reset HomePod, then Remove Accessory.
- Wait for the reset to finish. When the pulsing white setup light appears, unlock an iPhone or iPad and hold it near the speaker to set it up again.

- Unplug HomePod mini or its power adapter and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait another 10 seconds.
- Touch and hold the top of HomePod mini. A white spinning light should appear.
- Continue holding until the light turns red and Siri announces that HomePod is about to reset.
- Keep holding until you hear three beeps, then lift your finger.
- Wait for the reset to finish and set up the speaker again.
Restore with a Mac or PC if reset will not complete
- Connect HomePod mini to a Mac or PC using the USB-C cable that came with it.
- On a Mac, open Finder. On a PC, open the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes.
- Select HomePod when it appears, then click Restore HomePod.
- After the restore finishes, set up HomePod mini again.
Apple says restoring resets HomePod mini and updates it to the latest software available through the restore process. Follow Apple’s reset and restore instructions.
If there is no light
No light does not identify one specific problem in Apple’s status-light guide. HomePod mini may be powered off or disconnected, no status event may be occurring, or there may be an issue with the power connection or hardware. Check the adapter and cable connections. If the speaker remains unresponsive, contact Apple Support rather than assuming that a particular fault has been diagnosed.
