Start with the fireplace’s rating plate and its own lighting label or manual. Gas fireplaces use different controls and ignition systems, so a sequence that works on one model can be unsafe on another. Confirm the make and model, read the posted instructions, and follow that procedure exactly before operating any switch, key, valve or control panel.
Identify your fireplace’s control system
Common arrangements include a wall switch or remote, a keyed gas valve, a standing-pilot control knob, and electronic ignition operated from a control panel or remote. These labels and controls can look familiar across brands, but their ignition and shutdown sequences are not interchangeable.

Use the exact appliance instructions even if your fireplace appears to match one of these categories. The manufacturer’s procedure takes priority over generic advice.

Pre-use safety check
- Confirm that you are operating the intended appliance and have its model-specific manual or lighting label available.
- Do not proceed if you smell gas. Stop, avoid flames and electrical switches, and follow the emergency directions posted for the appliance and your local gas supplier.
- Look for obvious damage, unusual odors, soot, or a flame pattern that was abnormal during the last use. Arrange professional service instead of operating a damaged unit.
- Confirm that the fireplace has been inspected and maintained as recommended. Natural Resources Canada recommends inspection before initial use and regular servicing.
- Keep furniture, decorations, clothing and other combustibles away from hot surfaces and the appliance’s required clearance areas.
- Make sure any required household carbon monoxide (CO) alarm is installed and operating. A CO alarm supplements—not replaces—correct installation, operation and servicing.
Do not open a glass door, remove an access panel, or move a shutoff valve unless the instructions for your exact model tell you to do so.

Use the labelled procedure for your model
Read the startup directions printed on the appliance or in the manual from beginning to end before touching the controls. Follow the stated order for the gas valve, pilot or ignition control, wall switch, remote and any access panel. Do not combine steps from different brands or models.
If the unit has a standing pilot
Use only the pilot-lighting sequence specified for that fireplace. The manual may require a particular control position, an igniter, and a period of holding the control after the pilot catches. If the pilot or main flame goes out, Natural Resources Canada states: “If the pilot light or flame goes out, wait five minutes or longer (see the manufacturer’s instructions) before attempting to relight the fireplace.” The manufacturer’s longer interval, if stated, governs.

If the unit has electronic ignition
Use the designated switch, remote or control panel exactly as described. A reviewed electronic-ignition manual instructs users not to light the pilot by hand. Do not use a match, lighter or improvised ignition method unless your own manufacturer’s instructions expressly require and describe it.

Operate the key or valve only as directed by the appliance instructions. A pilot that is out does not establish that the fireplace is safe to relight; use the model’s shutdown, waiting and relighting directions. Utility guidance also emphasizes following the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and turning off the appliance gas valve when the pilot is out, but local emergency procedures can differ.

Stop immediately in these situations
Gas odor: Do not keep trying to light the fireplace. Follow the appliance’s posted emergency directions and contact your gas supplier or emergency services as those directions require. If you cannot reach the supplier, the model-specific manual may direct you to the fire department.
Repeated ignition failure: Stop after the number of attempts allowed by the manual. Do not keep releasing gas or introduce a flame. Arrange evaluation by a qualified gas-fireplace technician.

Abnormal flame, soot or odor: Turn the appliance off using the normal control if it is safe to do so, leave it unused, and schedule professional inspection.

After the fireplace is operating
Use the flame only while the appliance is attended as required by its manual. Keep combustibles clear of hot surfaces, do not alter the logs, glass, burner or venting, and use the normal switch, remote or valve procedure to shut the unit down. If the manual specifies a cooldown or a post-use position, follow it.
Inspection and ongoing service
Natural Resources Canada recommends inspection before initial use and continued regular servicing. A qualified fireplace technician can check the appliance, venting, ignition system, gas connections and flame operation. Keep the manual with the appliance so future users can identify the correct procedure instead of relying on a generic sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait before relighting a gas fireplace whose pilot went out?
Wait five minutes or longer, following the manufacturer’s stated interval if it is longer. Never relight while you smell gas.
Can I light an electronic-ignition fireplace with a match?
