There is no evidence-backed universal ranking of tomato companion plants. The ten choices below are practical neighbors selected from extension guidance: some share space efficiently, some provide flowers for beneficial insects, and some are useful edible pairings. None should be treated as a guaranteed pest-control or yield-boosting treatment.

What makes a good tomato companion?

Choose plants that fit the tomato’s mature size, root pattern, light exposure, watering schedule and harvest season. Maryland Extension recommends considering maturity time, above- and below-ground growth, light, nutrient and moisture needs, and the planting arrangement. Keep tomatoes reachable for inspection and watering; a diverse bed still requires regular scouting.

Low-growing, shade-tolerant crops generally work best on the north side of tall tomato plants. You can alternate plants within a row, alternate rows, or mix species through a bed, provided that air movement and access are not blocked.

Ten practical tomato companions

Plant Most defensible use beside tomatoes Evidence and limits
Basil Edible neighbor and culinary pairing Oregon State University Extension says basil and tomatoes grow well together; it finds insufficient research for strong-scent pest-repellent claims.
Carrots Cool-season root crop using lower space Tomato shade can help protect carrots from heat; Oregon State also describes carrot roots breaking up packed soil, without quantifying any tomato benefit.
Parsley Herb and insect-support plant Delaware Extension cites studies in which parsley attracted natural enemies or repelled herbivores in some settings, not a tomato-specific shield.
Chives Herb that can also supply flowers Some research cited by Delaware Extension concerns natural enemies or herbivore responses; protection is not guaranteed.
Onions and other alliums Compact edible crop UC Master Gardeners list the onion family as compatible. Maryland Extension summarizes research on aromatic volatiles affecting aphids and host-finding, with variable field results.
Lettuce Shade-tolerant salad crop Maryland Extension recommends low-growing greens on the north side of tomatoes as a space-and-shade strategy.
Marigolds Flowering diversity and possible nematode-management role Benefits depend on species, variety, root zone and management; cover-crop use and incorporating residues are more relevant to nematode suppression than simply planting a few flowers beside tomatoes.
Nasturtiums Annual flower adding diversity UC Master Gardeners list them as compatible. Reported reductions in squash bug or cucumber beetle damage apply to other crop contexts, not tomato pests.
Sweet alyssum Low, compact, long-season insect-support flower Delaware Extension uses it in a demonstration garden to attract and support beneficial insects; it can be grown from seed.
Flowering dill or cilantro Umbrella-shaped flowers for pollinators and natural enemies Maryland and Delaware Extension identify flowering herbs as useful insect resources; allowing some plants to bloom is the key practice.

Basil

Basil is a straightforward choice when you want an edible companion that occupies similar warm-season conditions and belongs in the same kitchen recipes. Oregon State University Extension specifically says basil and tomatoes taste good together and grow well together. That is a compatibility recommendation, not proof that basil increases tomato growth or repels insects. The same guide says research is insufficient for the common claim that strongly scented herbs ward off pests.

Carrots

Carrots make use of the lower layer of a tomato bed. Oregon State Extension notes that tomato foliage can shade heat-sensitive carrots, potentially making the pairing useful where summer heat is a problem. It also describes carrot roots as helping break up packed soil. Treat that as a garden-design mechanism, not a measured increase in tomato yield. Sow carrots early enough to establish before tomato plants create dense shade, and thin them so their own roots have room.

Parsley

Parsley provides a harvestable herb and can contribute to insect diversity. Delaware Extension includes parsley among herbs that have attracted natural enemies or repelled herbivores in at least some studies. Results from those studies should not be translated into a guarantee that parsley protects nearby tomatoes. Use it where you can harvest regularly without crowding the tomato stem.

Chives

Chives are compact, perennial in many climates, and useful both as an herb and, when allowed to flower, as a small ornamental. Delaware Extension lists chives among herbs with some research involving natural enemies or herbivore responses. Plant them at the edge of the bed so clumps do not obstruct tomato access, and remove spent flower heads if you do not want them to self-sow.

Onions and other alliums

Onions, garlic and related alliums occupy a different vertical and root-space niche from a staked tomato. UC Master Gardeners’ regional chart lists the onion family as compatible with tomatoes. Maryland Extension summarizes research in which volatile compounds from alliums and other aromatic plants influenced aphids and insect host-finding. Such effects are not consistent enough to promise field-wide pest control, so keep normal monitoring and management in place.

Lettuce

Lettuce is one of the clearest space-use pairings. Maryland Extension recommends low-growing, shade-tolerant salad greens on the north side of tomatoes. Plant successive small sowings in spring or early summer, then harvest before tomato foliage becomes too dense. This arrangement uses shade; it does not establish that lettuce improves tomato health.

Marigolds

Marigolds add flowers and can support beneficial insects. Delaware Extension explains that flowers may provide resources for natural enemies and that marigolds can support predatory minute pirate bugs through alternate prey. Nematode claims require more qualification: Maryland Extension summarizes reports involving African and French marigolds, while Oklahoma State cautions that significant effects are associated with certain French marigold varieties and their immediate root zones. Delaware Extension notes that nematode suppression works better when marigolds are grown as a cover crop and their residues are tilled into the soil before the following crop. A few marigolds beside a tomato should therefore be viewed as a diversity planting, not a guaranteed soil treatment. If you want to try this option, French marigold (Tagetes patula) seeds are the relevant type to investigate, checking the variety and local growing recommendations.

Nasturtiums

Nasturtiums are edible annual flowers that add color and structural variety without requiring a separate bed. UC Master Gardeners list them as compatible with tomatoes. Maryland Extension reports reduced squash bug and cucumber beetle damage in other crop situations, but that finding cannot be transferred to tomato pests. Give trailing types room to spread so they do not smother the tomato base or make inspection difficult.

Sweet alyssum

Sweet alyssum is a particularly defensible choice when you want a low, noncompetitive flower. Delaware Extension describes it as compact, easy to grow and long-season, and uses it in a demonstration garden to attract and support beneficial insects. Sow it from seed along a bed edge or between widely spaced tomatoes, leaving enough open soil for watering and airflow.

Flowering dill or cilantro

Dill and cilantro are most useful for beneficial-insect support when some plants are allowed to flower. Maryland Extension identifies flowering cilantro, basil and dill as popular with pollinators and natural enemies; Delaware Extension also lists dill among herbs with benefits in at least some studies. Expect these herbs to bolt or become less desirable for culinary use once flowering begins, so stagger plantings if you want both leaves and flowers.

Plants to avoid or use cautiously

UC Master Gardeners of Tulare and Kings Counties list corn, potatoes, fennel and the cabbage family as incompatible with tomatoes in its regional chart, citing competition, shared diseases or stunting. A regional chart is guidance rather than a universal rule for every soil, cultivar, spacing and climate. Potatoes and tomatoes, for example, can share disease concerns, while vigorous crops can compete for light, water and nutrients.

Competition is the general risk even with plants described as compatible. Delaware Extension warns that adding companions can lower crop yield compared with a monoculture when plants compete too strongly. Reduce that risk by spacing for mature size, keeping roots and irrigation zones from becoming congested, and removing any companion that overwhelms the tomato.

How to plan a companion planting

  1. Map mature dimensions. Mark the tomato’s eventual height and width, then reserve an access path for tying, pruning if you use it, harvesting and pest checks.
  2. Assign vertical layers. Put low crops such as lettuce, alyssum or carrots where tomato shade will be useful, generally on the north side in the Northern Hemisphere.
  3. Match water and timing. Pair plants with similar moisture needs, and use quick crops such as lettuce or early carrots before the tomato canopy closes.
  4. Leave inspection space. Avoid dense foliage against stems. Airflow and visibility matter more than fitting the maximum number of plants into a bed.
  5. Let selected herbs flower. Reserve some dill, cilantro, chives or basil for bloom if insect resources are your goal, while succession-sowing others for harvest.
  6. Monitor, then adjust. Check leaves, stems and soil regularly. More natural enemies in a diverse planting do not always mean fewer pests on the crop, because predators and parasitoids may not disperse where they are needed.

“You will still need to check your plants frequently for unwanted pests, and control them in some other way if the good bugs are not effective enough!” — University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, fact sheet reviewed February 2025.

What these pairings can—and cannot—prove

Extension sources support compatibility, habitat value, shade management and specific qualified mechanisms. They do not establish a comparative top-ten ranking or a universal percentage increase in tomato yield or pest reduction. Treat companion planting as a way to use space and add ecological variety, alongside sound tomato practices such as appropriate spacing, watering, staking and direct pest management when monitoring shows it is necessary.
