To use a dovetail jig, first identify the joint it makes, then match the router bit and guide bushing or bearing to that jig’s manual. Mill matching stock, orient and clamp it against the stops, set the cutter depth, and practise on offcuts before routing finished pieces. The template, cutter and guide must be treated as a matched system: a replacement that looks similar can produce a different joint.
Identify the joint and jig arrangement
Dovetail jigs do not all cut the same joint or load boards the same way. Check the jig manual before setting up: half-blind, through and other dovetail systems can use different templates, clamping positions and routing sequences.
Half-blind dovetails
Half-blind dovetails are hidden from one face and are often used to join drawer fronts and sides. A fixed-template jig may cut the joint in a single operation, but its board orientation is model-specific. For the Woodstock International D2796, the back piece lies horizontally on top and the mating side piece stands vertically at the front. The inside faces point out and up, and both pieces must touch the side stops. Follow the D2796 manual’s setup illustration and instructions: Woodstock International D2796 manual.
Through dovetails
Through dovetails show tails and pins on both faces. They generally use an adjustable-finger or separate-template system and separate routing operations, rather than the half-blind arrangement described above. Consult the documentation for your specific model; Leigh’s TD330 documentation includes through-dovetail and router-table instructions: Leigh TD330 manual.

Match the cutter and guide to the jig
Read both the jig and router manuals. The jig manual specifies the template-compatible bit and guide system; the router manual covers its collet, base configuration and operating limits. Check the bit’s angle, cutting diameter and shank, as well as the guide bushing’s or bearing’s outside diameter and fit in the router base.

These are model-specific examples, not universal dovetail-jig specifications. The D2796 dimensions come from the D2796 manual; the ITM dimensions come from the ITM Dovetailer manual. Do not substitute a guide or bit based only on appearance: changing either can change the cutter’s path and the resulting joint geometry.

Prepare stock and set up safely
- Mill consistent boards. Use mating pieces of the thickness required by the jig. Mark each piece’s reference face and top edge so you can load every workpiece in the correct orientation.
- Install the guide and bit with power disconnected. Confirm the bushing or bearing seats correctly in the router base and that the bit is secure in the collet. Do not plug in until the base and cutter are secure.
- Set cutter depth. Use the jig’s depth gauge or the measurement specified for your model. If the jig has two depth adjusters, set both sides evenly and lock them.
- Load and clamp the boards. Seat each piece firmly against the jig’s stops and clamp it so it cannot move. For the D2796 half-blind setup, use the horizontal-back and vertical-side arrangement described in its manual.
- Check router support and clearance. The router base must sit flat and remain supported on the template throughout the cut. Keep the cutter from contacting the jig or guide.
Follow the router’s safety instructions, wear safety glasses, hold the router firmly with both hands, and keep hands clear of the cutter while the motor is running. Secure the jig and work so neither can shift. The D2796 manual and Porter-Cable/Stanley safety instructions give model-specific safety guidance.
Make test cuts and tune the fit
Before cutting finished parts, make a sample joint from offcuts of the same material and thickness. The D2796 manual explicitly calls for sample-piece testing. Assemble the samples dry and check that the shoulders align and the joint fits as intended. Change one setting at a time, make another test cut, and record the final setup before routing the production pieces.

If the joint is too tight
Reduce cutter depth by a small amount and test again. First confirm the bit and guide dimensions match the jig manual; a mismatched combination can cause fit problems that depth adjustment alone will not solve.
If the joint is too loose
Increase cutter depth in small increments and retest using identical stock. Do not change the bit and depth setting at the same time, or you will not know which change affected the fit.

If one side fits differently
Check that the boards have consistent thickness, the marked reference faces were loaded in the same orientation, and each piece was seated against its stops. Also verify that the router base stayed flat on the template during the cut.

Review feed control, cutter sharpness and work support. Do not pause with a spinning cutter engaged in the work.

Route the finished parts and dry-fit before gluing
Once the test joint fits, keep the tuned jig, bit, guide and depth settings unchanged for the complete production run. Route with the base flat on the template and maintain control of the router. After cutting, remove tear-out as needed, check shoulder alignment and dry-fit every corner before applying glue.
Can a dovetail jig be used on a router table?
Some jigs support router-table use, but it depends on the specific model and requires its designated setup. The ITM Dovetailer manual instructs users to use the Router Table Guide Knobs when operating that jig on a router table: ITM Dovetailer manual. Do not assume that a jig designed for handheld routing can be transferred to a table without checking its instructions.
What to compare when choosing a jig
If you are selecting a jig for a particular job, compare the features that affect the joint and the setup:
