For most single rooms, a correctly sized window air conditioner is the best balance of cooling speed, efficiency, noise and cost. A 100–150-square-foot room generally needs about 5,000 Btu/h; a 100–250-square-foot bedroom, office or guest room usually falls in the 5,000–6,500 Btu/h range. Choose a portable unit when a window model cannot be installed, and pay close attention to installation quality, efficiency ratings and noise.
How many Btu do you need for one room?
Use the room’s floor area as a starting point, then adjust for conditions that add heat. ENERGY STAR’s current certified-product guidance maps 100–150 square feet to about 5,000 Btu/h. Consumer Reports recommends roughly 5,000–6,500 Btu/h for a 100–250-square-foot bedroom, office or guest room.
| Room area | Starting capacity | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 100–150 sq. ft. | About 5,000 Btu/h | Small bedroom, office or nursery |
| 150–250 sq. ft. | About 5,000–6,500 Btu/h | Average bedroom or guest room |
| 250–350 sq. ft. | About 8,000 Btu/h | Larger bedroom, studio area or home office |
Increase the estimate when the room has strong afternoon sun, a high ceiling, weak insulation, substantial air leakage or more occupants than usual. A room that opens onto other uncooled spaces may also need more capacity. Avoid simply buying the largest available unit: an oversized air conditioner can cool the air quickly without removing humidity evenly, leading to short cycling and an uncomfortable room.
Window or portable: which type is better?
Window air conditioners
A window unit is usually the strongest one-room choice when the window can safely support it. Consumer Reports’ testing finds that window models can cool faster, while portable models deliver only mediocre performance in comparison. A window unit exhausts heat directly outdoors instead of using a long hose inside the room, so it generally wastes less cooling capacity.

- Usually faster, more effective cooling for the rated room size.
- Typically better efficiency than comparable single-hose portable units.
- Leaves floor space available and needs no indoor exhaust hose.
- Requires a compatible window, secure installation and storage or weatherproofing when removed.
Portable air conditioners
A portable air conditioner is useful where a landlord, window design or building rule prevents window-unit installation. Consumer Reports test overseer Chris Regan describes a portable model as “an alternative, but not an ideal one.” Performance depends heavily on the hose arrangement and how well the window opening is sealed.
- Can move between rooms and usually needs no exterior mounting bracket.
- Works with many sliding or unusual windows that cannot hold a window unit.
- Takes floor space, adds indoor noise and requires an exhaust hose.
- Single-hose designs can draw replacement air into the room; dual-hose designs may reduce that drawback but vary by model.
For portable models, compare the DOE/SACC capacity rather than relying on older ASHRAE-only numbers. Also check the supplied window panel, hose length and diameter, condensate drainage method, and whether the unit shuts off or alarms when its tank fills.
Features that matter for comfort and energy use
Inverter compressor
An inverter compressor varies its output instead of switching fully on and off. Once the room reaches the target temperature, it can run at a lower rate, which usually produces steadier comfort and less cycling noise. Inverter models often cost more initially, so they make the most sense when the unit will run frequently or when bedroom noise matters.

Efficiency ratings
Look for ENERGY STAR certification and compare the applicable standardized metric. For room air conditioners, the Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER) includes cooling efficiency and standby energy. Compare CEER values only among units tested under the same rating system and capacity range.
Noise
Published sound figures are useful for bedrooms but are not always measured under identical conditions. Treat a minimum advertised figure as a reference, not a guarantee for every fan speed or installation. A securely mounted window unit, level cabinet and sealed gaps also reduce rattling and outdoor noise.
Controls and maintenance
Remote controls, timers and app connectivity can improve convenience, but they do not compensate for incorrect sizing. Choose a model with an accessible, washable filter and clean it as the manufacturer directs. A blocked filter reduces airflow and can make a correctly sized unit appear inadequate.

Even an efficient air conditioner can perform poorly when air leaks around the cabinet or portable hose. ENERGY STAR warns that an improperly installed room air conditioner can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole, raising energy costs and reducing comfort.
- Measure the window opening and sill depth before ordering. Check the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum dimensions.
- Inspect the sill, sash and frame for rot or weakness; repair structural problems before mounting a unit.
- Use the supplied side panels, foam and fasteners, plus a support bracket where required by the manual or local rules.
- Keep the cabinet level as directed, and route any condensate outlet so water cannot damage the wall or sill.
- For a portable unit, install the exhaust panel tightly and seal every gap around the panel and hose.
- After installation, run the unit and check for air leakage, vibration, abnormal noise and condensate drainage.
Do not defeat safety features or use an extension cord unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Follow local electrical requirements and the installation manual; heavy window units may need two people to lift safely.

A practical buying checklist
- Room fit: Measure length × width and note sun exposure, ceiling height, insulation and occupancy.
- Capacity: Match the Btu figure to the room rather than buying on brand or price alone.
- Rating: Prefer ENERGY STAR where available and compare CEER for window units; use DOE/SACC for portable units.
- Compressor: Consider an inverter for steadier temperature and quieter operation.
- Noise: Read the manufacturer’s sound specification and user manual for operating modes.
- Fit and safety: Verify window dimensions, electrical requirements, mounting hardware and support needs.
- Portable details: Check single- versus dual-hose design, hose length, window sealing and drainage.
- Ownership: Confirm filter access, cleaning instructions, warranty and replacement-part availability.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing by horsepower or a vague “small room” label
Use the stated Btu capacity and room-size guidance. Labels differ between brands and do not replace measurements.
Ignoring sun and insulation
Two rooms with the same floor area can have different loads. A sunny, poorly insulated top-floor room may need the upper end of the recommended range.
Leaving installation gaps unsealed
Leaks admit hot outdoor air and can force longer run times. Seal the window kit or cabinet edges without blocking required drainage or ventilation.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete

Comparing portable ratings incorrectly
Older ASHRAE figures and DOE/SACC figures are not interchangeable. Compare like-for-like ratings and examine the complete hose and drainage setup.
Neglecting filter cleaning
Check the filter regularly during heavy use. Follow the model’s instructions for washing, drying and replacement.
Which choice fits your room?
Choose a 5,000-Btu window unit for a typical 100–150-square-foot room when a suitable window is available. For a room approaching 250 square feet, evaluate the 5,000–6,500-Btu range and adjust for heat load. For spaces up to about 350 square feet, an 8,000-Btu inverter window model is a reasonable class to investigate. Select a portable unit primarily when window installation is impractical, and then prioritize DOE/SACC capacity, a well-sealed exhaust panel and manageable drainage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 5,000-Btu air conditioner cool a 200-square-foot bedroom?
It may, but 200 square feet is near the upper end of the 5,000-Btu range. Strong sun, high ceilings, poor insulation or extra occupants may justify a larger capacity.
Are portable air conditioners safer than window units?
Neither type is automatically safer. Follow the installation and electrical instructions, support a window unit correctly, keep portable exhaust hoses clear, and never block required airflow or drainage.
What does CEER mean on a room air conditioner?
CEER is the Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio, a standardized measure that includes cooling efficiency and standby energy for room air conditioners.
