Open blinds or curtains on sunny windows during winter daylight, especially south-facing windows, then close them after sunset. This lets available sunlight add passive heat and daylight while the closed covering reduces the chill you feel from a cold pane at night. It is a sound rule of thumb, not a guaranteed bill-saving formula: orientation, cloud cover, glazing, frames, drafts and covering type all matter.
The winter day-and-night rule

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Home Energy Checklist puts the residential guidance this way: “During winter, open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.” DOE gives the same day/night principle for blinds in its Office Energy Checklist.
Let window orientation and sunlight decide
South-facing windows
These are the clearest candidates for opening during sunny winter hours because they can receive useful low-angle sunlight. Close them when the sun leaves the glass or at sunset.
East-, west- and north-facing windows
East and west glass may receive useful sun only during part of the day, so adjust the covering around the actual beam of sunlight rather than leaving every blind open all day. North-facing windows generally provide less direct winter solar gain in the Northern Hemisphere; keeping their coverings closed when the glass feels cold can improve comfort, while opening them remains reasonable when daylight or a view is the priority.

Cloud, shade and exterior obstructions
On a cloudy day, behind an overhang or where buildings or trees block the sun, opening a covering cannot create solar heat. Use daylight, privacy, glare and comfort as the deciding factors instead.
Closing blinds reduces chill, not every heat loss
A closed blind or curtain creates an additional interior layer between occupants and cold glazing. That can reduce the radiant chill you perceive after dark, but it does not make the window airtight or stop all heat flow. DOE notes that window efficiency depends on the climate and the window’s thermal characteristics; a lower U-factor means less heat flows through the window. DOE has also stated that about 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows. That is an approximate, broad statement in its 2022 winter advice, not a measurement for your particular house: Six Simple Steps To Save Energy and Money This Winter.

Handle drafts separately
If you can feel moving air, the primary problem is air leakage, not blind position. A covering may make the area feel more comfortable, but it will not repair a failed seal.
- Caulk fixed cracks around the frame.
- Apply weatherstripping to movable window parts.
- Use a properly fitted clear plastic film kit to reduce airflow and energy loss.
DOE recommends these measures in its winter guidance. A window insulation film kit complements the open-by-day, closed-by-night routine; it is not a substitute for repairing damaged frames or seals.
Are blinds, curtains or shades better?
There is no universal winner established for every home. Interior blinds, curtains and shades differ in fit, gaps, fabric, operation and how closely they sit to the glass. DOE materials discuss several covering types, including cellular shades, but do not provide a single ranking that applies to all houses.

Existing blinds or curtains
Use what you already have consistently: open sunny windows during the day and close coverings at night. Keep slats or fabric positioned so the covering does not block useful sun unnecessarily.

Cellular insulating shades
If cold glass remains uncomfortable, cellular insulating shades are a reasonable upgrade to investigate. Their potential benefit depends on installation and the existing window; the cited DOE material does not establish a brand-level performance claim or a quantified saving.

The figures come from Residential Windows and Window Coverings: A Detailed View of the Installed Base and User Behavior. The report found openings were slightly more common in winter than summer during morning and afternoon, with that difference statistically significant; it did not calculate a universal savings rate.
A practical routine for your home
- Identify windows that receive direct winter sun and note roughly when the sun reaches them.
- Open those coverings while the sunlight is actually warming the glass.
- Close coverings when direct sun ends, temperatures drop after sunset, or the room feels chilled.
- Check for drafts with your hand around the sash and frame; seal leaks rather than relying on the blind.
- Reassess comfort after weather changes. A routine that helps on a clear day may offer little solar benefit during cloud, shade or persistent wind.
The best result comes from combining seasonal covering use with sound window seals and appropriately efficient glazing. Blind position is a comfort and solar-management measure, not a replacement for window repairs or upgrades.
