Food Network Kitchen bought and tested 10 highly rated sets in 2026, grinding spices and making pesto across granite, marble, stainless-steel and other materials. Consumer Reports tested eight sets in 2026 and likewise found that material and size strongly affected results.
1. ChefSofi 6-Inch Granite Mortar & Pestle: best overall
The 2-cup ChefSofi is the most versatile size in this group. It has enough room for everyday spice grinding and sauces without the bulk of a large molcajete. Food Network’s testers successfully reduced whole peppercorns to a fine grind and mixed salt, garlic and pesto ingredients. TechGearLab independently rates the 2-cup granite version its best overall.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why it stands out
- Granite’s rough working surface supplies friction for spices and aromatics.
- Two cups covers a practical middle ground for pesto, guacamole and cooking pastes.
- Its heavy stone construction should resist sliding better than lightweight bowls, though any mortar can spill ingredients when overfilled.
Care requirement
Food Network recommends seasoning this granite set by grinding uncooked white rice, rinsing with water and air-drying. Avoid soap when the maker warns that granite can absorb residue, and follow the current manufacturer instructions for your particular set. Search for the exact product phrase “ChefSofi 6-inch granite mortar and pestle set 2 cup” to distinguish it from similarly named listings.
#1 Best Overall
- A kitchen must-have: Mortar and pestle set (mortero de cocina - morter and pessel - molcajete or guacamole bowl and pestel) has been used for THOUSANDS of years as THE way to crush, grind and powder herbs and dry spices. Contrary to an electric grinder or crusher, the age-old, durable, traditional manual grinding method ensures that all cooking ingredients bring out their full flavor and aroma profiles, allowing you to further control their texture and make delicious, chunk-free dishes.
- Versatile tool: Take advantage of your brand new stone motar and pedestal set’s various applications in the kitchen and simplify your everyday life! Use your mortor to pulverize nuts, seeds, ginger root and garlic and make homemade salad dressing, sauces and condiments, such as fresh mustard, quacamole, pesto, salsa, chutneys and more. Widely used in pharmacies and apothecaries, your molcajete set will help you powder pills, for optimal ingestion, or hide them in your stubborn pet’s kibble!
- Effortless use: This ChefSofi stone mocajetes motor & pedestal set was designed with your convenience in mind. Made from unpolished granite, you will waste no time fumbling or stabilizing your pestal masher, as our motar’s cup interior provides the best, metate-like natural friction for swift ingredient crushing, grinding or powdering. With a 500 ml (approx. 2 Cup) capacity, this stone mortor also reduces the need for ingredient refills, affording quick food prep, in one go!
- Quick cleaning & zero kitchen messes: As granite is inherently durable and heavy, this mortar will not slip on your kitchen counters, remaining still throughout the grinding process. Our pestle offers foolproof grip, gliding across the mortar’s interior, without the need of excess hand motions, which would result in ingredient waste and kitchen counter messes! By investing in this stoneware set, you are gaining a timeless, multifunctional kitchen tool, which will make cooking a breeze!

2. Health Smart by Maxam Granite: best budget and spice-only set
At 9 fluid ounces, the Health Smart is sized for peppercorns, cumin, coriander, salt and other small quantities rather than meal-size sauces. Food Network found its abrasive granite interior made pepper grinding easy, but the bowl could not accommodate even half a pesto batch.
Choose it when
- You mainly grind a teaspoon or two of spices at a time.
- You want a compact, lower-cost stone set.
- You are willing to complete the required seasoning step before food preparation.
Its small capacity limits mess and storage space, but it also means you will need a larger mortar for pesto, guacamole or several servings of curry paste.
3. Gorilla Grip Heavy Duty Granite: best for small batches
Food Network tested the 1.5-cup Gorilla Grip and found its abrasive granite interior effective for spices and sauces. Testers also noted the comfortable pestle grip and durable construction. The same line is available in 2-cup and 4-cup sizes, so you can keep the material and design while changing batch capacity.
Rank #2

- Elegant And Practical: Natural marble stone with unique color and pattern complements any decor; easy to use and clean; hand wash in warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly
Size options
- 1.5 cups: the tested choice for small sauces and spice work.
- 2 cups: a more flexible everyday size.
- 4 cups: suited to larger preparations, but heavier and harder to store.
The line includes a no-questions-asked lifetime guarantee. Confirm the exact size in the listing, because performance and handling change substantially as stone volume increases.
4. Williams Sonoma Marble: best for large batches and serving
Food Network chose Williams Sonoma’s marble mortar and pestle as its large-batch winner. Marble is smoother and more design-forward than the abrasive granite interiors favored for aggressive spice grinding, making this option attractive when the bowl will also sit on the table.
Check before ordering
The cited testing provides less detailed specification data for this retailer-specific model than for the granite picks. Verify the current capacity, dimensions, pestle fit and availability at Williams Sonoma before purchase; those details can change by listing and region.

How to choose the right size
| Capacity | Best uses | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 9 fluid ounces | Single spices and very small quantities | Too small for half a pesto batch in testing |
| 1.5 cups | Small sauces, spice blends and aromatics | Less room for multiple servings |
| 2 cups | General cooking, pesto, guacamole and spice work | Heavier and less compact than a spice-only bowl |
| 4 cups | Large batches and family-size preparations | More weight, storage demand and lifting effort |
Leave headroom rather than filling any bowl to the rim. Consumer Reports observed that none of the eight tested mortars kept every ingredient contained, so a larger bowl can reduce—but not eliminate—spillage.
Granite, marble and other materials
Granite
Granite is the all-purpose heavy option in the cited tests. Abrasive, unpolished interiors create friction, but many granite sets need seasoning and careful cleaning.
Marble
Marble offers a smoother, more decorative appearance and works well for serving. Its surface may provide less bite than a rough granite interior for some dry spices.

For guacamole
Use a wider, heavier bowl with at least the 1.5-cup scale so ingredients have room to be crushed and folded. Work in batches if the bowl is narrow or ingredients ride up the sides.
Seasoning, cleaning and stability checklist
- Read the maker’s instructions and season granite if required.
- For the ChefSofi procedure reported by Food Network, grind uncooked white rice until it picks up manufacturing dust or odors.
- Rinse with water and air-dry completely.
- Avoid soap on granite when the manufacturer cautions that the stone can absorb residue.
- Use a stable counter and moderate batches; heavy stone resists movement, but weight makes lifting and storage harder.
The pestle tip and interior dimensions are often omitted from product listings, even though both affect control. Treat published interior texture as a useful discriminator, and inspect current specifications where available.
Bottom line
Buy the 2-cup ChefSofi if you want one mortar and pestle for most kitchen jobs. Select Health Smart for inexpensive, spice-only work; Gorilla Grip when you want a small-batch granite set with multiple size options and a lifetime guarantee; and Williams Sonoma’s marble model when large-batch capacity and table presentation outrank detailed published specifications. Recheck current size and stock for every retailer listing before ordering.
