A portable chicken coop is a lightweight shelter and run—often called a chicken tractor or ark—that you can shift across a yard or pasture. The best plan fits your flock and terrain while staying secure against predators, ventilated without a roost-level draft, and practical to service for water, eggs, and cleaning.
Choose a plan that fits your flock
Plan dimensions are useful starting points, not guaranteed stocking limits. Tractor Supply Company lists these examples; its page does not state a publication year:

Adjust any example for bird breed, local welfare requirements, climate, how long birds will be confined, and whether they have access to additional run or pasture space. A plan’s stated capacity alone does not establish that it will suit every flock or management routine.

Different layouts trade portability against access and weather protection. Compare the finished structure—not just its frame—on the ground where you will use it.

A-frame tractor
A light, economical shape can suit a small flock. Check that birds have enough headroom, that nest boxes are reachable from outside or through a service panel, and that the roof gives adequate shade and rain shelter.
Low-profile wheel tractor
A low design can be pulled and repositioned frequently. Choose wheels and ground clearance for the terrain, and make sure the wheel openings and edges do not create predator gaps when the tractor is parked.

Walk-in movable coop with attached run
Human-height access makes feeding, egg collection, and cleaning easier, but the complete unit is heavier and needs room to turn. Check that the site can support it without bogging down or becoming unstable.

Raised coop with movable run
Raising the shelter can improve access beneath the house. Secure the run connection so predators cannot exploit the joint, and consider stability and the shade available to birds underneath.

Build in mobility from the start
Mobility is a structural feature, not an accessory to improvise after construction. Cornell Small Farms reports that a simple design using one set of tires made a tractor cost-effective and easy to move, including through taller swards. Minnesota Extension describes using a two-wheeled dolly or ropes to move a poultry hut.
- Use a wheel set, skids, tow point or handle, rope, or a two-wheeled dolly suited to the finished weight and your local ground conditions.
- Keep the frame rigid enough to resist racking as it is pulled or lifted.
- Plan the route and turning space, and avoid a finished design too heavy for the available moving method.
- After parking, inspect the contact edge for openings and secure the structure against shifting.
Make the shelter weather-ready and ventilated
Virginia Tech guidance says, “Poultry require a dry, draft-free house.” In practice, provide continuous air exchange through high vents, windows, or perforated sides while avoiding airflow directly across roosting birds. Cover openings with predator-resistant mesh. A solid, weather-resistant roof should shed rain and provide shade; fans may be needed in especially warm or humid conditions.

Use exterior-grade lumber or plywood for the structure, with pressure-treated members where wood contacts the ground. Choose materials that can withstand weather and be cleaned.
Keep predators out—even when the coop moves
Protection must cover the entire shelter and run, including openings, doors, joints, and the perimeter. Use 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth on openings and other predator-exposed areas. Where digging predators are a concern, extend a mesh apron outward or bury a perimeter barrier. Secure doors with reliable latches.

- Check for gaps at the ground, around doors, at the run-to-coop connection, and beside wheels or skids.
- Repeat the gap check after every move, because uneven or soft ground can leave new openings.
- Park on high, well-drained ground and confirm the barrier meets the ground along the full perimeter.
Lay out access for daily chores
A portable coop still needs to work for the person caring for it. Include a human-sized service door or large panels that make it comfortable to refill feed and water, collect eggs, and clean. Position nest-box access so eggs can be gathered without awkward lifting or crawling inside. Make sure panels and doors can be closed and latched securely after each task.
Before building, check that the planned footprint leaves room to open those access points and that the chosen route lets you move the complete structure without catching on obstacles.
