Oxygen bleach is a category of non-chlorine bleach. Its peroxygen compounds release active oxygen in water, oxidizing colored stain molecules so they become colorless or easier to wash away. Sodium percarbonate is the common powdered ingredient, but products sold as oxygen bleach can contain different active and supporting ingredients.
What oxygen bleach is
The American Cleaning Institute defines non-chlorine bleach as “a laundry product containing peroxygen compounds, which release active oxygen in wash water.” The category includes sodium percarbonate, hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate, potassium monopersulfate, and organic peracids.
Oxygen bleach is therefore not one single chemical or guaranteed formula. A powder labeled oxygen bleach may be a sodium-percarbonate product, a formulated laundry additive, or part of a detergent or stain remover containing builders, surfactants, enzymes, optical brighteners, bluing agents, or fragrance.
Sodium percarbonate in powdered products
Sodium percarbonate is an addition compound made from sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. The OECD/UNEP assessment gives it as Na2CO3·1.5H2O2; the Royal Society of Chemistry also represents the same composition as 2Na2CO3·3H2O2. When dissolved, its peroxygen component supplies the bleaching action.

How oxygen bleach works
Bleaching is oxidation, not a mechanical scrubbing effect from free oxygen gas. Colored stains contain light-absorbing structures called chromophores. Peroxygen chemistry alters and breaks those structures; the resulting fragments absorb less visible light and can be removed more readily in wash water. The Royal Society of Chemistry summarizes the principle as: “Bleaches are used to oxidise coloured substances to colourless ones.”
How quickly and completely this happens depends on the product formulation, the stain, the fabric, water conditions, temperature, and contact time. Because those variables differ, a universal amount, soaking time, or temperature cannot be prescribed safely for every oxygen-bleach product.

Oxygen bleach versus chlorine bleach

“Color-safe” is a broad product description, not a promise for every garment. Check the clothing or textile care label, test an inconspicuous area when the label permits, and use only the stated concentration and method on the package.

The OECD assessment records sodium percarbonate in laundry detergents, laundry additives, and machine dishwashing products. It also lists smaller uses in multipurpose cleaners, drain products, and denture cleansers.

Laundry
Products may be added to a wash, used as a presoak, or sold as a formulated stain remover. The correct procedure depends on the label and the item’s care instructions. Do not assume that directions for one powder apply to another.
Dishwashing and household cleaning
Sodium percarbonate may appear in machine-dishwashing products and multipurpose cleaners. A product intended for one application may contain surfactants, enzymes, fragrances, or other ingredients that make it unsuitable for a different use.

Is oxygen bleach safe for colors and fabrics?
Compared with chlorine bleach, non-chlorine bleach is generally gentler in oxidizing action, and the American Cleaning Institute describes it as suitable for most fabrics, colors, and finishes. That does not make it harmless or universally compatible. Dye stability, fiber type, finishes, print treatments, and the product’s concentration all matter.

- Follow the oxygen-bleach product’s stated dilution, temperature, and contact time.
- Do not use a generic internet recipe when the label provides different directions.
- Stop if you see color loss, fiber damage, or an unexpected surface reaction.
Safety precautions and mixing warnings
PubChem identifies sodium percarbonate as an irritant that can affect the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes and may be harmful if swallowed. Keep it away from children and pets, avoid breathing dust, prevent eye contact and prolonged skin contact, and follow the package first-aid instructions.

Domestic chlorine-free products may contain hydrogen peroxide at low concentrations, but the concentration and handling requirements are product-specific. Store the container closed and use the ventilation recommended on its label.
Never mix cleaning products
UK Health Security Agency guidance warns that sodium hypochlorite can generate hazardous gases when mixed with acidic solutions or ammonia-containing products; ammonia mixtures can produce irritating chloramines. Do not mix oxygen bleach with chlorine bleach, acids, ammonia products, or other cleaners. Use one product at a time exactly as labeled.
Does oxygen bleach disinfect?
Do not treat “oxygen bleach” as a blanket disinfectant claim. An EPA-accepted label for one institutional formulation containing sodium percarbonate and an activator includes disinfectant claims for that specific product. That label does not establish that oxygen bleach in general, or every consumer product containing sodium percarbonate, disinfects. Look for an antimicrobial claim and directions on the exact product label.

- Identify the product type. Check whether it is a standalone additive, detergent, presoak, stain remover, dishwashing product, or multipurpose cleaner.
- Read the ingredient panel. Confirm the listed active ingredient and note builders, surfactants, enzymes, brighteners, fragrances, and other additives.
- Match it to the material. Follow the item’s care label and any warnings about dyes, wool, silk, leather, coatings, or metal components.
- Follow the package directions. Use only the specified amount, water temperature, and contact time; these are not universal across products.
- Rinse or wash as directed. Do not leave treated material in solution longer than the label permits.
Bottom line for a household or jobsite
Oxygen bleach is non-chlorine, peroxygen-based bleach that works by oxidizing colored stains. Sodium percarbonate is a common powdered form, but formulations differ. It is often gentler on colors than chlorine bleach, yet it can irritate skin and eyes, damage some materials, and should never be mixed with other cleaners. The product label and the material’s care instructions are the authority for every specific use.
