Measure the OSB against the flatness limit in the instructions for your specific laminate, then choose a repair that is approved for the whole floor assembly. For example, Pergo’s January 2026 guidance treats no more than 2 mm over 1 m as flat for its stated wooden-subfloor instructions; it lists a fibered leveling compound or a plywood/OSB leveling floor for deviations above 4 mm over 2 m. Those are manufacturer-specific limits, not universal code requirements. A self-leveling product is not automatically suitable for pouring directly onto OSB.
How flat does an OSB subfloor need to be?
Use the tolerance published for the laminate you plan to install, including its required measurement span. Manufacturers do not all express their requirements the same way, so a number from one brand should not be treated as a universal standard.
- Pergo: Its Version 01.2026 instructions say a wooden subfloor with no more than 2 mm unevenness over 1 m is flat for the guidance described. For a stated condition involving cupping of wooden planks, it describes a designated underlay when the deviation is greater than 2 mm and less than 4 mm over 2 m. Above 4 mm over 2 m, it lists fibered leveling compound or an underlay plus a plywood/OSB leveling floor. See Pergo’s laminate installation instructions, Version 01.2026.
- Quick-Step: Its cited guidance calls for smoothing deviations above 4 mm over 2 m or above 1 mm over 20 cm. It says an uneven timber floor must use its Thermolevel underlay. Its older installation PDF gives a 2 mm over 1 m flatness threshold and identifies fibered compound or a plywood/OSB leveling floor for larger deviations. Check the current instructions for your specific Quick-Step product before relying on the older PDF. See Quick-Step’s subfloor preparation FAQ and its laminate installation PDF.
Measure the OSB before choosing a repair
- Expose and inspect the floor. Remove existing floor covering from the wooden subfloor. Look for mould, insect damage, water damage, loose panels, and signs that the floor moves. Do not cover an unresolved problem.
- Check the laminate instructions. Note the specified tolerance and span, and confirm whether the instructions allow an underlay or repair method for your floor type.
- Use a straightedge over that span. Lay it across the floor in several directions and locations. Record the largest gap beneath it and identify raised areas. This span-based check lets you compare the actual floor with the manufacturer’s stated tolerance.
- Check moisture and ventilation. Pergo and Quick-Step each state a maximum wood moisture content of 10% in the cited instructions. Pergo also calls for sufficient crawl-space ventilation. Follow the applicable current product instructions and use a suitable moisture meter rather than judging by appearance.
- Secure loose parts. Pergo says loose parts of a wooden subfloor should be nailed or screwed down. If panels flex or joints move, address that movement before leveling; a surface layer will not correct a moving subfloor.
Choose a method that matches the problem

When a leveling compound is appropriate
A compound is an option only when both the laminate guidance and the compound manufacturer’s instructions support the proposed assembly. Confirm the product explicitly permits the OSB substrate and follow its requirements for preparation, primer, reinforcement, thickness, drying, and compatibility with the finished floor. Pergo lists fibered leveling compound for its stated wooden-subfloor condition above 4 mm over 2 m, but that does not make every fibered compound suitable for every OSB floor.

USG Durock is a defined system, not a generic shortcut
USG’s Durock Multi-Use Pro Series installation guide allows its self-leveling underlayment over engineer-approved, APA-rated exterior-glue plywood or OSB using metal lath. Under that cited wood-subfloor method, the minimum depth is 1/2 in. (13 mm), and the assembly requires Durock Primer-Sealer. USG describes that primer as suitable for preparing wood subfloors and OSB before Durock self-leveling underlayments; this does not establish suitability for unrelated products. That minimum pour depth adds substantial height. Check door clearances, transitions, appliances, and adjacent flooring before committing. USG also warns that differential or excessive movement in a wood floor can crack the underlayment at joints and nearby areas; stabilize the floor rather than using compound to mask movement.
When a plywood or OSB overlay makes more sense
Pergo lists an underlay plus plywood/OSB leveling floor as an option for its stated wooden-subfloor condition above 4 mm over 2 m. An overlay can address broader unevenness without relying on a pour, but it raises the floor and must be installed as a compatible system. The cited guidance does not set a universal panel thickness or fastening schedule. Use the selected panel and laminate instructions to determine panel type, thickness, fastening, seam layout, and underlay; do not guess these details.

Stop and resolve the subfloor condition first
Leveling is not a substitute for repairing a failing or unstable floor. If OSB panels flex, seams move, the surface is water-damaged, or you cannot accommodate the height required by an approved repair, resolve that issue before laminate installation. The cited manufacturer guidance does not diagnose structural deflection or specify a universal OSB overlay assembly; where the cause or structural adequacy is unclear, have the floor assessed before covering it.
