There is no independently measured “number one” designer green. The most useful shortlist combines Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams’ own popular-color guidance with colors recommended by named designers in Livingetc and Homes & Gardens. Compare them by undertone, depth, room light and finish before committing to a wall, cabinet or millwork color.
What are the most popular green paint colors?
Benjamin Moore’s popular-colors page is a brand-curated selection, not a vote by a representative group of designers. It includes soft sages, smoky greens and formal deep greens. Sherwin-Williams similarly organizes its recommendations by undertone and room effect. The Farrow & Ball choices below come from interview-based designer coverage, while Pewter Green’s cabinetry guidance comes from a Homes & Gardens feature published June 24, 2026.

Quiet sage and gray-green choices
October Mist and Saybrook Sage
These Benjamin Moore selections suit rooms where green should feel restful rather than dramatic. Their muted quality can work across walls, bedrooms and open-plan spaces, but the apparent balance of gray, yellow and blue will depend on the room’s light and nearby finishes.

Sherwin-Williams characterizes Sea Salt as a muted green with gray undertones. It is a candidate for a calm living room or hallway when you want color without a highly saturated statement. Test it beside white trim: a cool light source can make the gray more noticeable.

French Gray and Pigeon
French Gray No. 18 and Pigeon No. 25 are more changeable options. Lauren L Caron, founder and principal designer of Studio Laloc, says French Gray is “so versatile and changes tone, not just from room to room, but also throughout the day.” She adds, “My favorite use for French Gray is on millwork and joinery,” making it especially relevant to built-ins, cabinetry and bookcases. Melissa Oholendt describes Pigeon as a blue-gray green that shifts between blue and green as the light changes.
Earthy, olive and moody greens
Renwick Olive
Renwick Olive SW 2815 brings a warmer, earthier direction than gray-green choices. Sherwin-Williams describes it as grounding and particularly charming in an exterior scheme, so consider it for siding, shutters or a room that already contains warm wood and aged metal.

Vintage Vogue
Vintage Vogue 462 is Benjamin Moore’s smokier, deeper counterpoint to its sage offerings. It can give a dining room, study or built-in storage more visual weight without moving all the way to a near-black forest green.

Pewter Green
Pewter Green SW 6208 sits between green and gray and is frequently discussed for cabinetry. Sherwin-Williams Color Marketing Manager Emily Kantz says, “Depending on the lighting, Pewter Green can read as a deep green, soft olive, or moody neutral, creating depth and warmth while maintaining a timeless appeal.” Interior designer Kelsey McGregor adds, “Pewter Green lends itself beautifully to a layered, collected aesthetic.”

Those shifts make surrounding materials important. The Homes & Gardens feature pairs the color direction with natural wood, warm brass, rusty reds and plum tones. Sample it on the actual cabinet face or a large board rather than judging a small digital chip.
Green Smoke
Melissa Oholendt, founder and design principal of Oho Interiors, recommends Green Smoke No. 47 when a room needs a cooler deep green: “I especially love incorporating Green Smoke when there’s a need for a cooler, deep shade of green,” she says. Livingetc’s designer guidance places it naturally in media rooms, mudrooms and dining rooms, where its depth can create an enveloping atmosphere.

Deep statement greens
Essex Green
Essex Green HC-188 is Benjamin Moore’s historic, deep option for a focal wall, formal room or saturated built-in. Because a deep color carries more visual weight, check it against ceiling height, daylight and the amount of trim before using it throughout a small room.

Card Room Green No. 79 is a mid-tone with a strong connection to natural foliage. Farrow & Ball designers suggest it for family rooms and dens, where a warmer, nature-led green can support relaxed furnishings without becoming a bright accent.

How do I choose the best green paint color for my living room?
- Identify the undertone. Decide whether you want blue-green, yellow-green, gray-green or warm olive. Sherwin-Williams’ green guidance uses these directions to explain why colors that look similar online can behave differently in a room.
- Assess the light. Note whether the room faces north or south, how much artificial light it receives and whether it is a basement or shaded space. Sherwin-Williams advises paying attention to light-reflectance value (LRV), particularly in north-facing rooms and basements.
- Choose visual depth. Start with sage or gray-green for a quiet backdrop, move to a saturated mid-tone for more presence, or choose a deep green for a deliberate, enveloping effect.
- Match the surface to the job. A wall color does not automatically translate to cabinetry or millwork. French Gray has specific designer applications on joinery and bookshelves; Pewter Green is specifically featured on kitchen cabinetry.
- Check fixed materials. Put samples beside flooring, counters, tile, trim, upholstery and wood. Benjamin Moore notes that matching undertones can create cohesion; soft pink, coral and peach can provide a complementary contrast.
- View samples repeatedly. Benjamin Moore recommends viewing green samples on the wall throughout the day. Sherwin-Williams notes that lighter greens with higher LRV may help a space feel bigger, but neither brand guarantees a particular result in every room.
What shade of green is good for a living room?
For a low-key living room, begin with Sea Salt, Saybrook Sage or October Mist. If the room has warm wood and you want an earthy direction, test Renwick Olive. For a more collected or cocooning room, compare Pewter Green, Card Room Green or Green Smoke. Essex Green and Vintage Vogue are better when you intentionally want a darker focal effect.
These are starting points, not universal rankings. A north-facing room, warm LED bulbs, reflective flooring or strongly colored upholstery can change the result enough that the same named paint needs a different neighboring palette.

A reliable green-paint sampling process
- Shortlist two or three colors from different undertone families rather than several near-duplicates.
- Buy manufacturer-matched physical samples or paint sample cards. A generic board can help you move a test around, but it does not reproduce a named formula unless the paint itself is applied.
- Paint a large area or sample board and place it beside trim, flooring, counters and major furnishings.
- Check the sample in morning, afternoon and evening light, with the room’s normal lamps switched on.
- For cabinetry or millwork, inspect the sample on the same orientation and sheen you plan to use; a wall test alone may not predict the finished surface.
- Choose the color only after the undertone remains compatible across those conditions.
