Philips Hue refreshed its Pillar spotlight range in Europe on July 2, 2024. The updated single, double and extension fixtures keep the familiar adjustable smart spotlight design but use GU10 bulbs rated at up to 400 lumens instead of 350, with a rated light-source life of 25,000 hours rather than 15,000. The improvement is useful but incremental: this is a brighter, longer-lived refresh, not a new lighting platform.
What Philips Hue announced
The July 2024 announcement covered an updated Pillar family rather than an entirely new category of fixture. The core design remains an adjustable spotlight using a replaceable GU10 lamp, with Philips Hue app control, Bluetooth operation and optional Hue Bridge integration.
The reported European lineup comprised a single spotlight, a double spotlight and a single-spot extension. The main single and double models were reported in black and white finishes. Availability was described for EU countries; the report said the United Kingdom had not yet received or listed the products at that time. That announcement does not establish current worldwide, UK or US availability.
For installation planning, the GU10 format matters. The lamp is replaceable rather than a permanently sealed LED module, but a replacement must still match the fixture’s dimensions, mains voltage and regional electrical requirements.

The 400-lumen figure comes from the updated Philips Hue GU10 bulb reported with the refresh. An older Philips specification lists a 350-lumen included bulb and a 15,000-hour lifetime: Philips older Pillar single specification. Moving from 350 to 400 lumens is about a 14% increase in rated maximum output, calculated as (400 − 350) ÷ 350. It should not be described as a 14% increase in perceived brightness in every room: beam direction, wall colour, mounting position and dimmer level all affect what occupants see.
The longer figure is the rated life of the updated light source, not a guarantee that every fixture component will operate for 25,000 hours under every installation condition.
Which Pillar model fits a project?

The extension’s missing dimmer is intentional rather than a defect: an existing owner can avoid paying for a duplicate control. A first-time buyer expecting a complete standalone package should choose a model that includes the switch or budget for another control method.

Official regional listings include the Pillar single and Pillar extension. A Philips lighting document for a double configuration is available at Philips double-spotlight documentation. Check the regional SKU before ordering because finishes, electrical ratings and included accessories can differ.
Light quality and practical features
- Adjustable white light spans 2,200K warm white to 6,500K cool daylight.
- The lamps are dimmable and the spotlight heads can be aimed at artwork, shelving, worktops or circulation areas.
- Four preset light recipes are supported according to the launch coverage.
- The described refresh is White Ambiance: it provides tunable white light, not automatically the full-colour effects of a White and Color Ambiance product.
- Because the output is directional, a Pillar is accent or task lighting rather than a substitute for a room-wide ceiling fixture.
Bluetooth or Hue Bridge?
Bluetooth for a small installation
Bluetooth control through the Philips Hue app is suitable for local operation without buying a Bridge. The July 2024 launch report described Bluetooth control for up to 10 lights simultaneously. Treat that number as launch-era product guidance because app and firmware limits can change.
Hue Bridge for a larger or automated home
The same report described app control for up to 50 lights when a Hue Bridge is used. A Bridge is the better fit when a project needs away-from-home control, larger installations, schedules, scenes, more extensive automation or broader Hue accessory integration. It is not mandatory for a small Bluetooth setup. Philips’ regional ecosystem information is at Philips Hue.

Launch coverage also listed Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility. Confirm the exact regional account, firmware and assistant requirements before handover.

Is the brightness upgrade worth it?
It makes sense when
- An older Pillar feels marginal in a hallway, kitchen work area, reading corner or other directional-lighting application.
- You are replacing lamps and the refreshed model costs close to remaining older stock.
- The additional rated life is valuable in a difficult-to-access fitting.
- You want a complete single or double fixture with a dimmer included.
Keeping an older Pillar can be reasonable when
- 350 lumens already meets the lighting requirement.
- The fixture is normally run dimmed for decorative accent lighting.
- You specifically want full-colour lighting and the selected SKU is only White Ambiance.
- You need a radically different optical layout, broad room illumination, outdoor weather resistance or a permanently integrated LED fitting.
The upgrade is primarily in the GU10 light source, not a fundamental change to the Pillar’s optics or mounting concept. Specify the required beam placement and measured lumen output rather than assuming the newer fixture will light an entire room.
Checks before specifying or installing
- Confirm the configuration. A single or double is a complete fixture with a dimmer; the extension is intended to expand an existing Pillar setup and omits that switch.
- Verify the regional SKU. Check mains voltage, finish, included lamp and local certification before ordering.
- Check GU10 compatibility. Confirm lamp depth and dimensions rather than assuming every Hue GU10 generation is interchangeable.
- Choose the control architecture. Use Bluetooth for a small local installation; plan for a Hue Bridge where remote control, scenes, automation or many lights are required.
- Set the lighting brief. Decide whether the project needs tunable white, full colour, accent light or general illumination before selecting the Pillar.
- Validate current pricing. Treat €89.99, €159.99 and €69.99 as historical EU launch signals, not quotations for a 2026 project.
Bottom line
Philips Hue’s 2024 Pillar update is a sensible refinement: up to 400 lumens instead of 350, a 25,000-hour rated lamp life instead of 15,000, and the same GU10-based smart-lighting ecosystem. It is attractive for new installations and for owners who need more directional output or are replacing older lamps. Owners satisfied with existing brightness should not expect a transformative reason to replace a working fixture.
