Yes—some mums planted in the ground will come back, but success depends on choosing a perennial garden mum suited to your climate and giving it time to establish before winter. A mum sold as a fall display plant is not necessarily winter-hardy. Spring planting, full sun, well-drained soil, and winter protection improve its chances, but no planting method guarantees survival.
Which mums are most likely to return?
Look for a perennial garden mum selected for winter hardiness in your region, ideally with a named variety and a stated hardiness range. The generic label “mum,” flower color, and the fact that a plant is sold in autumn do not tell you whether it can survive your winter.
The University of Minnesota Extension distinguishes its selected hardy perennial mums from common florist mums sold at big-box stores and grocery stores, which it says are not bred to survive a Minnesota winter. The university reports that its northern-hardy selections are reliably hardy in Zones 3–9; that range applies to those selections, not to every mum or every garden. University of Minnesota Extension’s 2026 explanation describes the distinction.

Ask a local nursery for the variety’s hardiness and whether it is appropriate for your area; local Extension advice can help resolve what a broad zone range means at your site. Illinois Extension’s garden-mum guidance provides that general range.

When should you plant mums for the best chance of survival?
Spring is the safer choice
Plant in spring when you can. A plant put in the ground then has a growing season to develop roots before cold weather. That matters because mums have shallow, fibrous roots that are vulnerable to freezing and thawing; a fall-planted plant may enter winter with less-established roots. Illinois Extension calls spring the ideal planting time in its 2021 advice on growing fall mums.
Fall planting can work if it is early enough
If you are planting in fall, do it as soon as you can after buying the plant rather than waiting for the end of the season. Illinois Extension’s 2025 article recommends planting at least six weeks before expected frost, while other Extension advice emphasizes planting as soon as possible. Use the frost timing and guidance appropriate to your location; a mum already in full bloom late in fall has less time to establish and a less favorable start. Where should you plant them?
- Sun: Choose a sunny spot. Illinois Extension’s 2022 perennial-mum article specifies more than six hours of sun daily; another Illinois article describes six to eight hours. Treat these as source-specific guidance, not a promise that a particular amount of sun ensures survival.
- Drainage: Use well-drained soil and avoid low spots where water stands. Poor drainage can leave roots exposed to damaging wet conditions.
- Establishment watering: Keep the root ball from drying out while the plant establishes, especially through dry spells. Newly planted mums have shallow roots, so check the soil rather than assuming rainfall has reached them.
- Exposure: A protected site can help. Avoid a location that stays waterlogged or is especially exposed to harsh conditions if a more sheltered, well-drained spot is available.

Mulch the root area after the growing season to moderate temperature swings and reduce the chance that shallow roots heave as the soil freezes and thaws. Illinois Extension’s 2022 perennial-mum article recommends about four inches of mulch; another Illinois recommendation is to apply straw after the ground freezes. Straw or wood chips are examples of organic mulch. These are recommendations from different articles, not a single universal formula for every climate. The 2022 article and Illinois Extension’s 2017 guidance describe these approaches.

Should you cut the stems back?
Extension recommendations differ, so follow local advice rather than treating one method as mandatory everywhere. Illinois Extension’s 2022 article advises leaving old growth standing through winter beneath an adequate mulch layer. Its 2025 article instead recommends cutting the plant back after a hard frost kills the foliage and applying light mulch; Penn State Extension also describes cutting back after a hard frost. Illinois Extension’s 2025 instructions and Penn State Extension’s chrysanthemum guidance support the cut-back approach. The 2022 Illinois method is set out in its perennial-mum article.
What should you do if the mum comes back?
Wait until you can see new growth before treating the plant as having survived. As the shoots emerge, gradually move mulch away so the new growth can develop. To encourage a shorter, bushier plant with more fall flowers, Illinois Extension recommends pinching the growing tips when the plant reaches about 4–6 inches tall, then repeating once or twice before July. Pinching is shaping advice; it is not a way to determine whether a plant has made it through winter. See Illinois Extension’s spring-care instructions.

Why might a planted mum fail to return?
- It was a display florist mum, not a locally hardy perennial: Fall sales and the word “mum” alone do not establish winter hardiness.
- It went into winter too soon after planting: A late fall planting can leave too little time for roots to establish.
- The site stayed wet or lacked enough sun: Standing water and unsuitable site conditions can undermine a plant even when it is labeled perennial.
- Winter temperature swings affected shallow roots: Freeze-thaw cycles can stress roots, which is why the cited Extension guidance recommends winter mulch.
There is no survival percentage established by the cited Extension guidance for an individual garden mum. A hardy named variety and good care improve the odds, but the outcome still depends on the plant, local winter, timing, and site.
