Golden Alexander (*Zizia aurea*) is a North American native perennial that grows in full sun or partial shade, flowers in spring to early summer, and can self-seed where conditions suit it. Choose a site with moisture appropriate to your local climate, and give seed a moist, cold period before sowing.
What to know about Golden Alexander
Golden Alexander, also called Common Golden Alexander, is a perennial forb in the carrot family. Use the botanical name Zizia aurea when buying seed or nursery plants, since common names can be used for other Zizia species.
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service reports a range from Quebec to Saskatchewan south to Florida and Texas, and hardiness in zones 4–9. That broad range does not mean the plant is the right choice everywhere within it: check whether it is native and suitable for your local conditions.

Light
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Light shade is tolerated, so use the sunnier spot if that is what your garden offers, or partial shade where it better suits the site. USDA NRCS and NCSU Extension both describe this light range.

Soil and water
Golden Alexander occurs in wet habitats and does well in moist conditions, but it can tolerate summer dryness. Aim for reasonably well-drained garden soil; it need not be permanently waterlogged. The Morton Arboretum recommends moist, well-drained soil, while Grow Native! notes tolerance of a wide range of moisture and soil conditions.
Water newly planted seed or nursery stock according to the soil and weather at your site, especially while plants establish. The cited growing guidance does not prescribe a universal watering calendar, so adjust to local rainfall and how quickly the ground dries.

How to start Golden Alexander from seed
Seed is a practical way to grow this species, but it requires moist cold stratification. USDA NRCS states that seed germinates after 90 days of moist, cold stratification at 4°C. Supplier instructions may vary with seed handling and lot, so follow the directions for the seed you buy.
- Identify the seed: Buy seed labeled Zizia aurea, rather than relying on the common name alone.
- Provide the cold, moist period: Use the supplier’s method where provided. The USDA NRCS fact sheet specifies 90 days moist and cold at 4°C.
- Sow and grow seedlings: Follow the supplier’s sowing instructions. USDA NRCS reports high germination percentages and says seedlings can be transplanted into containers by midsummer.
Seed capsules ripen gradually in flattened flower heads. USDA NRCS describes collecting them as they darken from green toward burgundy and brown, then crushing them to release the dark-brown seeds. The same fact sheet documents seed propagation; fall sowing can be a seasonal approach, but it should not be confused with the stated 90-day stratification protocol.

What to expect through the seasons
Spring and early summer flowers
Expect yellow flower clusters in spring to early summer, with exact timing varying by region and weather. Grow Native! lists April, May, and June as bloom months; Massachusetts guidance describes bloom in late spring. Massachusetts also describes golden umbels about 3–4 inches wide.
After flowering
Seedheads may persist into winter. If you prefer not to encourage new seedlings, remove mature heads before they release seed; leave them if you welcome self-sowing. An older USDA NRCS plant fact sheet notes that foliage may decline in appearance as summer progresses, a possible seasonal pattern rather than a guaranteed problem in every garden.

Decide whether you want it to self-seed
Golden Alexander can naturalize in favorable conditions. Massachusetts guidance says it spreads readily by self-seeding, while USDA NRCS describes naturalizing under optimal conditions. The extent of spread depends on the site; it is not a guarantee that every planting will form a colony.
- To encourage a planting to spread: Leave some seedheads to mature and fall where new seedlings are welcome.
- To limit self-sowing: Remove mature seedheads before seeds disperse.
Choose a spot where some colony growth would be acceptable, particularly if the planting has adequate moisture.

Wildlife value
Golden Alexander supports insects as well as adding spring color. NCSU Extension identifies Zizia aurea as a larval host for the Black Swallowtail. Cornell Botanic Gardens reports that the Golden Alexanders mining bee (Andrena ziziae) collects pollen only from Zizia; the Morton Arboretum also lists butterflies and insect pollinators among its associated wildlife. Growing the plant can provide a resource, but it does not guarantee that a particular insect will visit your garden.
Choose the growing approach that fits your garden

For a locally appropriate planting, consult regional native-plant guidance as well as broad range and hardiness information. A regional list can help distinguish a plant that is hardy where you live from one that is a good ecological fit.
