Epsom salt can help plants only when they need magnesium; it is not a general-purpose tonic, fertilizer, or pest control. Because unnecessary magnesium sulfate can damage plants and disrupt nutrient balance, test your soil before applying it and follow recommendations for your location and crop.
What Epsom salt does for plants
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate (MgSO₄), which supplies magnesium and sulfur. Plants need magnesium in small amounts to form chlorophyll, while sulfur is part of proteins. Those roles do not mean most garden soil needs an extra supply. Washington State University Extension and the University of Idaho Extension advise using it only when a soil or plant diagnosis confirms a magnesium deficiency in Epsom Salt Use in Home Gardens and Landscapes.
It is not a complete fertilizer: it does not provide nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium. Adding it cannot replace a fertilizer or soil amendment selected to address a different diagnosed need.

Test soil before applying it
Yellowing between leaf veins while the veins remain green—often first visible on older leaves—can be a clue to magnesium deficiency. It is not a diagnosis by itself: other nutrient problems and unsuitable soil pH can produce similar symptoms. The University of Massachusetts Amherst’s greenhouse guidance also concerns greenhouse tomato production, not a household garden dose.

Request a soil test that reports pH and nutrient levels, including magnesium, and follow the laboratory’s or local Extension service’s recommendation. WSU Extension’s guide says, “A soil test is absolutely required before using this chemical.” It also advises against applying Epsom salt where salinity is high. Magnesium deficiency is reported most often in sandy, acidic soils, but local conditions determine what amendment, if any, is appropriate.
Choose an amendment that matches the test
The right choice depends on what the soil test identifies and whether the soil’s pH needs correction. Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfate without raising soil pH; dolomitic limestone supplies magnesium and calcium while raising pH. Virginia Cooperative Extension gives a conditional example in Soil Test Note 19: Vegetable and Flower Gardens:

The Virginia rate is not a universal recipe. Do not transfer rates intended for greenhouse production or small pots to outdoor beds, lawns, or shrubs; those contexts do not establish a general landscape dose. If a test does not call for magnesium, do not add Epsom salt as a precaution.
Popular claims that aren’t supported
More growth, flowers, or better seed germination
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says there is no scientific evidence that Epsom salt improves seed germination or nutrient uptake, and recommends using it only when magnesium deficiency is known. WSU Extension likewise says claims that extra magnesium or sulfate increases growth, flowering, or chlorophyll under normal garden conditions are unsubstantiated. Slug or vole control
Do not rely on Epsom salt to deter slugs or voles. Illinois Extension says adding it to soil will not control slugs in its response about Epsom salt on flowers. WSU Extension also finds the broader pest-deterrence claim unsupported.
Preventing blossom-end rot
Epsom salt is not a treatment or prevention for blossom-end rot. WSU Extension states that the disorder is not related to magnesium deficiency. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s guidance also warns that excess magnesium can make calcium less available to plants; see Epsom Salt in the Garden—Is it truly needed?.

Why excess can cause problems
Magnesium sulfate is a soluble salt. Applying it without a diagnosed need can contribute to salt injury, fail to improve growth or make it worse, and disrupt plant nutrition. WSU Extension notes that excessive magnesium sulfate can affect calcium, potassium, boron, iron, and manganese nutrition, as well as beneficial root associations. Readily dissolving does not make an unnecessary application harmless.

A practical decision checklist
- Get a soil test for pH and nutrients, including magnesium.
- Use Epsom salt only if the test or a reliable plant diagnosis identifies magnesium deficiency.
- Follow the recommendation for your region, crop, and growing setting; do not borrow a rate from a different setting.
- Choose lime rather than Epsom salt when the soil test calls for pH correction and recommends a magnesium source such as dolomitic limestone.
- Do not use Epsom salt as a general fertilizer, growth booster, slug remedy, or blossom-end-rot treatment.
For local advice, consult a university Extension service or soil-testing laboratory serving your area. Soil conditions and recommendations vary by region, so a generic internet recipe is a poor substitute for a test.
