Poinsettias are not considered deadly to people. Eating part of the plant can irritate the mouth and stomach, causing possible mild nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Contact with the milky sap can produce a skin rash. Dogs, cats and horses may drool, vomit or develop diarrhea after chewing poinsettias.
The safest approach is simple: keep a live poinsettia plant away from children and pets, and contact the appropriate poison or veterinary service after an exposure.
What experts mean by “poisonous”
The long-running claim that poinsettias are deadly is misleading. US Poison Control states that the plant is not fatal if eaten, while still advising people to prevent ingestion and seek guidance after an exposure.

Those descriptions are not contradictory: they reflect different audiences and thresholds for risk. “Toxic” does not mean that ordinary contact is usually fatal, and “not poisonous” does not mean that chewing the plant is risk-free.

As Poison Control clinical toxicologist Rose Ann Gould Soloway and certified specialist Serkalem Mekonnen put it: “The poinsettia plant is often considered deadly. That’s wrong.”
Possible effects by type of exposure

If a person ate a poinsettia
Children
Poison Control describes a case involving a 10-month-old who mouthed a small piece of leaf. In that reported case, the poison specialist advised wiping the child’s mouth and offering a drink. That case advice is not a universal treatment plan; a poison specialist should assess the actual age, amount and symptoms.

In the United States, use Poison Control’s webPOISONCONTROL service or call 1-800-222-1222. Have the plant, the estimated amount and the person’s symptoms available when you call.

If sap touched the skin
Poinsettia sap can cause a rash. Wash the affected area and stop further exposure. Seek medical care for a spreading, painful or persistent reaction, or for any breathing difficulty or swelling. Gardeners who handle poinsettias frequently are among those Poison Control notes may develop rashes.

If a pet chewed a poinsettia
ASPCA’s animal database lists poinsettia for dogs, cats and horses and identifies its irritant sap as the toxic principle. Listed effects include mouth and stomach irritation and occasional vomiting. FDA consumer guidance also names drooling, vomiting and diarrhea as possible signs.
Call your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. ASPCA says a consultation fee may apply. The human poison-center number is not pet advice. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to do so.

How much is dangerous?
Poison Control reports that researchers could not find a poisonous dose even after experimental doses of about 1.25 pounds (500–600 leaves). This is a historical experimental comparison, not a recommended safe dose. It must not be generalized to every person, child, pet or exposure, and it is not an incidence rate.

- Place poinsettias where children and pets cannot reach them.
- Supervise toddlers around houseplants; Poison Control notes that plant pieces can also present a choking hazard.
- Wear gloves if handling the plant causes skin irritation, and wash hands afterward.
- Keep the plant’s container, fallen leaves and pruned stems out of reach.
- Know in advance how to reach Poison Control, your veterinarian and an animal poison-control service.
When an exposure is an emergency
Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, severe swelling, unresponsiveness or rapidly worsening symptoms. For less severe human exposures in the United States, Poison Control can determine whether home observation or medical evaluation is appropriate. For animals, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly, especially if symptoms are appearing or the amount is unknown.
The bottom line on poinsettia safety
Poinsettias are best described as irritating rather than deadly. Human ingestion generally causes, at most, mild gastrointestinal upset, while sap can irritate skin. Pets can develop mouth and stomach irritation, drooling, vomiting or diarrhea. Keeping the plant inaccessible and using the correct human or veterinary poison service after an exposure provides a safer response than relying on the old “deadly poinsettia” warning—or treating the plant as harmless.
