Notre-Dame’s restoration was not a simple rebuild of everything that burned. First, crews secured the cathedral and rescued its contents; then specialists repaired surviving masonry and interiors while reconstructing the lost roof and spire to historically specific designs. The cathedral reopened for worship and public visits in December 2024, although related work is still planned.
What the 2019 fire damaged—and what survived
The fire of April 15, 2019, consumed the cathedral’s 13th-century roof framework and the spire designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Firefighters saved the two towers and the building’s overall structure. The restoration therefore had two intertwined tasks: rebuild defining structures that were lost, and protect and repair the historic fabric that remained.
First came rescue and stabilisation
Protecting the contents
In the hours after the fire, heritage officials and responders removed artworks and valuable objects. The French Ministry of Culture reports that 56 items from chapels—including five exceptional treasury pieces—were taken first to Paris City Hall and then to the Louvre. More than 100 people were mobilised to safeguard art and treasury objects.

Permanent reconstruction could not begin until the damaged building was made more secure. Starting in July 2019, crews installed 28 timber centering supports to reinforce the flying-buttress arches. The emergency securing and consolidation phase concluded in August 2021; permanent restoration followed diagnostics and designs reviewed through France’s historic-monument process.

The reconstruction used more than one historical reference
The approved approach did not copy a single earlier version of the roof throughout. It distinguished between the cathedral’s medieval framework and the 19th-century work of Viollet-le-Duc:
- Nave and choir: their frameworks were to return to their medieval state.
- Transept and spire: their frameworks were to follow the Viollet-le-Duc state.
Oak was used for the reconstructed frameworks and lead for the roof covering. The project authority reports that the masonry repairs required nearly 1,300 cubic metres of stone, and that approximately 1,000 oak trees were needed for the spire and transept frameworks. These are figures published by the restoration authority, not measurements from an independent audit.

The spire offered a visible marker of progress. On December 16, 2023, a golden cockerel was installed at its summit, 96 metres above the ground. Its installation marked completion of structural work; the lead covering and ornaments were still to be finished.
Scientific work helped turn fire debris into evidence
Not all the work was about replacing what had been lost. Scientists examined fragments from the burned roof framework, known as the “forest,” to learn about the timber that had been there. Catherine Lavier, an engineer at the French Museums Research and Restoration Center (C2RMF), explained that studying wood fragments can show whether a piece came from the inner or outer part of a tree and its position in the trunk. Comparing fragments can help researchers infer a tree’s size, shape, and growing conditions. That kind of analysis connects the reconstruction to evidence from the original building rather than relying on appearance alone.

Cleaning and conservation extended into the interior
Addressing lead deposits
The melting roof covering created lead oxides that settled on walls and objects. Removing contamination without harming historic surfaces required careful testing. Researchers at the Ministry’s historic-monuments laboratory trialled cleaning and restoration methods in two chapels before applying conservation approaches to affected areas.
Restoring art, furnishings, and the organ
The Ministry of Culture reports that 22 paintings received full restoration. New liturgical furnishings included an altar, baptismal font, tabernacle, bishop’s chair, and ambo. More than 1,700 new chairs, benches, or prie-dieu were also introduced. The project authority says the Great Organ was cleaned and restored in workshops in southern France and Nouvelle-Aquitaine before it returned to the cathedral.

Hundreds of specialists worked across the project
The Ministry of Culture describes more than 500 people working on the restoration, spanning architecture, engineering, archaeology, science, carpentry, masonry, stonework, restoration, organ building, and administration. The range reflects how a major heritage project combines structural construction with the protection and treatment of materials that cannot simply be replaced.
What reopening means—and what remains planned
Notre-Dame reopened for worship and public visits on December 7–8, 2024. That milestone marked the cathedral’s return to use, not the completion of every related project. The restoration authority’s overview lists six contemporary windows for the south aisle as planned for installation by the end of 2026.
