You can assemble a small, simple picket gate in about 30 minutes once the posts and opening are ready. Jon Culshaw’s 2014 Make: plan uses two 3 in × 2 in × 30 in rails, seven 3 in × 1 in × 36 in pickets and one 3 in × 1 in × 35 in diagonal brace for a finished gate approximately 3 ft high × 2 ft 6 in wide (915 × 762 mm). The half-hour claim covers cutting and assembly—not digging, setting posts in concrete, curing, painting or solving an out-of-square opening.
What you need for the 30-minute gate

These are the finished lengths for the small gate in Culshaw’s plan. Buy exterior-rated timber appropriate to your climate, and do not assume the listed lengths will fit a different opening.
Hardware, consumables and tools
- Exterior-rated wood screws and exterior timber glue
- Heavy-duty gate hinges rated for the completed gate
- A solid latch suited to the post and gate thickness
- Saw (mitre saw or handsaw), cordless drill or screwdriver bit, tape measure, square and clamps
- Spirit level and a sawhorse or stable work surface
- If installing new posts: posts, quick-set cement, drill bits, Dynabolts or suitable anchors, shovel and socket wrench
- Eye and respiratory protection when cutting, drilling or mixing cement
Measure the opening before cutting
- Measure the post opening at both the top and bottom. Record the smaller width if the posts are not parallel.
- Check the posts are plumb and the opening is square. Measure both diagonals; equal diagonal measurements indicate a square frame.
- Subtract the hinge-side and latch-side clearances required by your hardware. The resulting width—not a nominal “30-inch gate” size—is the rail length to use.
- Confirm the desired ground clearance and the height available below any fence cap or nearby obstruction.
If the opening is newly formed or the posts move under load, a 30-minute assembly will not produce a reliable gate. Set posts plumb, brace them while the concrete sets and follow the cement manufacturer’s instructions; Bunnings specifies at least 24 hours for its quick-set example before proceeding.
Cut and assemble the rectangular frame
Cut the rails and brace
Cut two rails to the measured finished width. Cut the diagonal brace to the finished 35 in length as a starting point, then dry-fit it and trim its ends so they bear firmly against the rails and pickets. A handsaw is sufficient; a mitre saw speeds repeatable cuts.

Square the frame before fastening
- Lay the rails parallel on a flat surface, with their faces aligned.
- Position the first and last picket temporarily to hold the rails at the intended height.
- Clamp the assembly and measure the two frame diagonals.
- Shift one corner until the diagonals match, then drive exterior screws through the rails into the end pickets. Predrill and countersink near board edges to reduce splitting.
Install the pickets with consistent spacing
Stand each picket plumb and fasten it to both rails. Keep the top ends aligned to the design you want—level, or cut to a decorative point before assembly—and check spacing as you go rather than correcting a cumulative error at the final board.
One Bunnings example uses 65 mm-wide pickets with 15 mm gaps, marking positions every 80 mm. Your seven 3 in-wide pickets and the actual opening may require a different pitch; calculate the available rail length, divide the remaining space into equal gaps, and use a spacer block to repeat the gap. Predrill and countersink screw holes, especially near end grain.

Fit the anti-sag diagonal brace correctly
Place the brace from the bottom hinge-side corner to the top latch-side corner. In this orientation the brace works primarily in compression as the latch side tries to drop, helping the gate resist sag. The reverse direction provides less useful support for this simple wood-braced layout.

- Dry-fit the 35 in brace across the back of the gate.
- Mark the rail and picket intersections and trim the ends for full contact.
- Apply exterior timber glue where appropriate and screw the brace to the rails and each intersecting picket.
- Keep the gate square while fastening; a brace cannot correct a frame that was fixed out of square.
Hang, latch and test the gate
Choose and fit hinges
Use heavy-duty hinges whose stated load rating exceeds the gate’s actual weight. Fit two hinges for this small, light design when the manufacturer allows it; use three hinges on a tall or heavy gate or where the hinge maker specifies three. Fasten hinges into sound post material, not only into thin cladding or a fence board.

Align the latch and clearances
- Support the gate at its final height with wedges or a temporary prop.
- Attach the hinges, check that the gate is level and verify the swing side.
- Install the latch on solid material, leaving the clearance required for the latch mechanism.
- Open and close the gate repeatedly. Check ground clearance, post clearance, latch engagement and that the brace does not foul the fence.
What the 30-minute claim does—and does not—include

Post excavation, concrete curing, correcting leaning or non-square posts, coating the wood and final hardware adjustment are separate tasks. Treat the half-hour as an assembly target for a prepared work area, not a promise for a complete gate installation.

After the gate is dry and operating correctly, apply an exterior stain or paint system suitable for the timber. Coat end grain and freshly cut brace ends especially thoroughly, and maintain the finish according to the product instructions. Keeping water out of screw holes, joints and end grain extends service life.

Safety and site-specific checks
- Wear eye protection for sawing and drilling, and respiratory protection where dust or cement mixing requires it.
- Follow the saw, drill, cement and coating manufacturers’ instructions.
- Renovation work can disturb asbestos, lead paint or CCA-treated timber; stop and obtain appropriate professional advice if those materials may be present.
- Local rules for wind loading, boundary gates, child access and pool safety vary. Verify them with your local authority or building professional before installation.
