“Copyright-free music” is not a single legal status. It may mean music offered under a license with defined uses, music with no copyright restrictions, or simply a track advertised as royalty-free. Before using a track in a smart-speaker routine, home video, livestream, or monetized upload, check what the license actually permits, which plan applies, and whether the permission covers that use.
What Does “Copyright-Free Music” Mean?
The label alone does not tell you who owns a track or what you may do with it. “Royalty-free” generally describes a licensing arrangement, not proof that a work has no copyright: a license may let you use music for certain purposes without recurring royalties while still imposing conditions. Vendors also use terms such as “commercial rights” and “commercial license”; read the applicable terms to learn their scope.
For AI-generated music, copyright protection is a separate question from permission under a vendor’s license. The U.S. Copyright Office says works generated entirely by AI are not copyrightable under U.S. law, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and human-authored contributions to a mixed work may be protected. Applicants registering a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human contribution. U.S. Copyright Office AI report

- Playback at home: For private listening on a smart speaker, check whether the service allows playback on the device or through the account you use. A statement about commercial publishing does not establish device compatibility or every kind of playback permission.
- Audio in a video or stream: Confirm that the license covers synchronization with visuals and the destination platform, including monetization if relevant. A track being downloadable or described as royalty-free does not establish those permissions by itself.
- Commercial use: Check whether the specific plan grants commercial use, which projects it covers, and whether attribution or other conditions apply. Free and paid plans can have different terms.
- Voice, cover, or uploaded audio: Get any necessary consent for a person’s voice or material you provide, and check the platform’s terms for those inputs and outputs. Permission to use a generated track does not establish permission to imitate an artist or use someone else’s recording.
- Ownership and reuse: A license to use a track is not necessarily ownership of it or exclusive use. Check whether the license is non-exclusive, how long it lasts, and whether it permits reuse across projects.
How Do Selected AI Music Services Describe Their Rights?
These statements give a starting point for comparison, not a substitute for the terms attached to the track and plan you use. Where a detail is not established below, check the vendor’s current terms.

| Service | What the available information says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Suno | Songs created as a paid subscriber are described as yours to keep and use, including as background music in videos or for publishing an album. Suno also describes Pro as including commercial-use rights and royalty-free music. The Free Plan does not include commercial rights. | Confirm the plan active when the song was created and the terms for the intended project. |
| Eleven Music | The tracks are described as cleared for broad commercial use, while commercial rights vary by subscription tier. The Free plan is limited to personal use and browse-only Marketplace access; the product information excludes film, TV, and studio games from commercial rights. | Check the applicable subscription terms and whether your project falls within an excluded use. |
| Loudly | Loudly describes its generated music as original, royalty-free, and commercially licensed; its product page says a commercial license is included. Its directory details say paid licensing rights depend on plan terms. | Check the plan-specific license and the permitted use for the exact project. |
| Mureka | Mureka describes downloaded tracks as royalty-free and says downloads include full commercial rights for use across platforms and projects. | Check the terms for your account, track, and intended use. |
| SimpleLofi | SimpleLofi describes its music as copyright-free and says it is safe for monetization on YouTube, Twitch, and all platforms. Its site lists a Starter plan at $16 per month for 100 lofi beats per month and a Pro plan at $89 per month for 1,000 lofi beats per month. | Check the current license terms, including what “all platforms” covers for your use. |
How Can You Check a Track Before Adding It to a Smart-Home Project?
- Write down the use. For example: “play privately on a smart speaker,” “add quiet background music to a family video,” or “publish a monetized video.” These are different uses to verify.
- Identify the track and plan. Keep the track name, creation or download date, account plan, and any license or certificate the vendor provides.
- Match the license to the use. Look for explicit permission covering playback, synchronization, monetization, attribution, and the relevant destination. If a term is unclear or absent, ask the vendor rather than infer permission from “copyright-free.”
- Check any source material. If the workflow uses a voice, cover, sample, or uploaded recording, confirm you have the required consent and that the platform terms allow that input and output.
- Save the evidence. Keep the applicable license, receipt, and relevant terms with the project files so you can identify the permission you relied on later.
What Should a Smart-Home Listener Keep in Mind?
A license statement about commercial uploads does not establish that a track can be distributed through a smart-speaker service, included in a shared household playlist, or used in a device routine. Check those specific terms with the music provider and the destination service. For a private ambient routine, keep the use private unless the license clearly permits broader sharing or publication.
Generated music can also raise separate platform and rights questions when it imitates a recognizable voice or uses material without permission. Obtain consent where needed and follow both the generator’s terms and the destination platform’s rules. For a YouTube upload that includes realistic altered or synthetic content, the provided guidance says creators must use YouTube’s altered-or-synthetic content label.
