Most Google Home Mini connection failures come from the Wi‑Fi network, phone permissions, stale saved settings, or setup mode—not a single universal defect. Test those causes in that order: verify the network, reboot the router and speaker, update Google Home, check Bluetooth and permissions, set up beside the router, try another phone or a temporary hotspot, and factory-reset only as a last resort.
Important: These instructions are for the original Google Home Mini (1st gen). The visually similar Google Nest Mini (2nd gen) uses a different reset method.
First, identify the speaker
The original Home Mini (1st gen) has a factory-reset button on its underside, below the power connector, marked by a circle. Google’s model guidance also distinguishes it from the Nest Mini (2nd gen), which has a wall-mount screw slot and a different reset procedure. Do not follow Nest Mini instructions on a Home Mini.

What symptom are you seeing?

Five-minute checks before resetting
- Test another device. If phones and computers also cannot get online, reboot the modem/router and check with your ISP. If everything else works, focus on the Mini or setup process.
- Check power. Plug the Mini directly into a wall outlet. Reseat the connector and look for a loose cable or failing power strip.
- Confirm the password exactly. Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive. A new router with the old SSID can still behave differently because of security mode, band steering, DHCP, or isolation settings.
- Reboot, don’t reset. Unplug the router for one minute, reconnect it, then unplug the Mini for one minute and reconnect it. A reboot does not erase configuration (Google’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting; reboot guidance).
- Bring everything together. Put the Mini and phone in the same room, about 15–20 feet (4–6 m) from the router for the initial test. Avoid cabinets, televisions, microwaves, and the edge of coverage.
Check the phone and Google Home app
As of August 18, 2026, Google’s general requirements are a Google Account, home Wi‑Fi, the Google Home app, Bluetooth during discovery, Android 9 or later, or iOS/iPadOS 17 or later (current requirements). Google Home cannot set up speakers from a computer.
- Update Google Home and the phone’s operating system.
- Connect the phone to the Wi‑Fi network you intend to give the Mini; cellular data is not a substitute for local-network access.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and allow Google Home.
- Force-close Google Home, reopen it, and toggle the phone’s Wi‑Fi off and on.
If setup still cannot discover the speaker, open the phone’s Wi‑Fi settings and look for a temporary network resembling GoogleHomeXXXX, connect to it if it appears, then return to Google Home. Try a second supported phone or tablet. Google’s iOS troubleshooting steps are documented here.
Reconnect after changing the router, SSID, or password
When the Mini is still listed in Google Home:
- Open Google Home and tap Home → All devices.
- Touch and hold the Mini’s device tile.
- Tap Settings → Device information → Wi‑Fi → Forget this network.
- Return to the Home screen and tap Home → Add → Device → Search for device.
- Follow the setup prompts with the phone near the Mini and router.
If Forget this network is unavailable or fails, Google says a factory reset may be required (Wi‑Fi network-change instructions).

Try both Wi‑Fi bands—without assuming 2.4 GHz is mandatory
With a dual-band router, test setup on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz when each is available. Google specifically recommends trying 2.4 GHz during some update-recovery flows, but it does not establish that every Home Mini must use only 2.4 GHz. Test beside the primary router first, especially with mesh systems.
Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic
Create a temporary hotspot with a different phone and attempt setup. This is evidence, not a guaranteed permanent workaround:
- Mini connects to the hotspot: the speaker can join Wi‑Fi; investigate the home router’s password, security, isolation, coverage, or ISP.
- Mini fails on the hotspot too: suspect the Mini, setup phone/app, power, or corrupted configuration.
Google cautions that hotspot reliability varies with carrier coverage, interference, distance, and the data plan (hotspot guidance). Hotel, guest, dormitory, school, and business networks may block setup through login pages or client isolation.

When an update appears stuck
White lights moving from left to right can indicate an update download, during which “Hey Google” may not respond. If this lasts more than about 20 minutes, reboot the Mini and router. If it remains stuck, reset and set it up again; Google recommends using 2.4 GHz if available during that recovery. Keep the original power adapter firmly connected to a wall outlet. Reset only after the network, phone, close-range, alternate-phone, and hotspot tests fail. A factory reset erases device data, removes its home configuration, cannot be undone, and requires complete setup again.

- Leave the Home Mini plugged in.
- Turn it over and locate the button below the power cord, identified by the etched circle.
- Press and hold the button. After about five seconds, reset begins.
- Continue holding for roughly ten more seconds until the speaker confirms the reset.
- Open Google Home and set it up as a new device.
Do not use the Nest Mini 2nd-gen method (turn off the microphone and hold the top center); that is not the Home Mini 1st-gen procedure (Google reset instructions).
After the reset: a practical decision tree
- Every household device is offline: repair the router/ISP connection first.
- Only the Mini is undiscoverable: check Bluetooth, Local Network permission, app version, power, and another phone.
- It works beside the router but not in its normal room: improve coverage or placement; move it back gradually to confirm.
- It works on a hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi: review router security, guest-network isolation, band steering, and DHCP settings.
- It fails on multiple supported phones and networks after reset: stop repeating resets. Document the lights and exact error, then contact Google support; power or speaker hardware may be failing.
When replacement is reasonable
Do not buy a new speaker to solve an ISP outage, missing phone permission, or weak room coverage. Replacement becomes sensible when the Home Mini repeatedly fails on multiple supported phones and networks after a factory reset, or when its adapter and power behavior are unreliable. Compare the current Google Store offerings, such as the Google Home Speaker or a Nest Mini, and verify live pricing, availability, and any subscription bundle before buying.
The Bottom Line
Work from least destructive to most destructive: prove the Wi‑Fi works, reboot, fix Google Home and phone permissions, test close to the router, forget the saved network, try another phone or hotspot, and reset the original Home Mini only when those tests fail. A reset clears configuration; it cannot repair bad coverage, an ISP outage, a defective adapter, or failed hardware.
