Acrylic is usually the best choice for a glass-like finish and outdoor clarity; polycarbonate is the strongest choice when impact resistance and heat matter; and PETG is often easiest to thermoform into complex shapes. None is the universal winner: the right sheet depends on its grade, thickness, support, exposure and fabrication method.

At a glance

Choose When your priority is Watch out for
Acrylic (PMMA) High visual clarity, a polished appearance, surface hardness, outdoor weathering, or laser cutting. It is more brittle under impact than polycarbonate and can crack or craze around holes or under stress.
Polycarbonate (PC), including Lexan Impact resistance, toughness, cold-weather durability, or higher heat capability. Uncoated PC scratches more easily; outdoor service may require a UV-protected grade or coating.
PETG Thermoforming, deep draws, fabrication versatility, or a potentially useful balance of toughness and chemical resistance. Its heat capability is generally lower than PC’s, and outdoor performance must be confirmed for the exact grade.

These are general tendencies, not guarantees for every sheet. Thickness, sheet-making process, coatings, color, grade and test method can change the result. For construction glazing, guards or other safety-critical work, select and size the actual product for the applicable loads and code—not just the polymer name.

What the names mean

Acrylic usually means polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a rigid transparent thermoplastic used in signs, displays and glazing. Cast acrylic is commonly chosen for laser cutting, engraving, solvent bonding and optical finish; extruded acrylic is often selected for cost, consistent thickness and forming. They are not interchangeable specifications, and impact-modified or outdoor grades may behave differently from general-purpose sheet. See acrylic material information.

Polycarbonate (PC) is a tough, transparent engineering thermoplastic. Lexan is a SABIC brand family of polycarbonate products, not a separate type of plastic. Lexan sheet is sold in multiple constructions and grades, including UV-protected, coated and specialty products. Confirm the product code, surface treatment and technical data rather than assuming every PC sheet has the same performance. SABIC describes LEXAN resin as polycarbonate; LEXAN sheet products include different sheet options.

PETG is a glycol-modified PET copolyester. It is related to PET but is not identical to ordinary bottle PET. Sheet grades are widely used in formed displays, covers, trays and barriers. Food-contact compliance, fire performance and outdoor suitability are product-specific, not properties to assume from the letters PETG alone. Product data for Plaskolite VIVAK and Eastman Spectar illustrates why the exact grade matters.

How the materials compare

Property Acrylic / PMMA Polycarbonate / PC PETG
Clarity Usually the strongest choice for a glass-like appearance. Very clear, though common comparisons often place it below acrylic. Very clear; results vary by product.
Impact Least forgiving under impact; can still be suitable when properly designed and supported. Usually the highest impact resistance of the three. Often tougher than general-purpose acrylic, but normally not a substitute for PC where impact margin is critical.
Surface wear Generally harder and more scratch-resistant than uncoated PC. Scratches relatively easily unless a suitable hard coat is used. Surface performance is product-specific; do not assume all grades have repairable scratches.
Sun and weather Often a good starting point for outdoor clarity and weathering; confirm the grade. Use a grade designed for outdoor exposure, such as UV-stabilized, capped or coated sheet. Verify documented weathering performance before permanent outdoor use.
Heat Moderate. Generally the best of these three for heat, subject to grade and load. Generally lower heat-deflection capability than PC.
Forming Can be thermoformed; often selected where finish and optics matter. Can be formed, but may demand more process control and higher temperatures. Often an attractive choice for deep draws and complex thermoformed shapes.
Laser cutting Commonly preferred, especially suitable cast acrylic. Ordinary PC sheet is generally not the standard choice for laser cutting. Requires process-specific evaluation; do not assume acrylic-like edges or settings.
Chemicals and cleaning Solvent-sensitive; check the specific cleaner and stress conditions. Some solvents and cleaners can cause stress cracking or other damage. Often a promising starting point, but compatibility remains chemical- and grade-specific.
Food contact Only if the exact grade and finished assembly have suitable documentation. Only if the exact grade and use have suitable documentation. Some grades are documented for food contact; the polymer name alone is not proof.

Published transmission figures show why a single ranking should not be treated as a specification: one comparison gives representative values around 92% for acrylic, 88% for PC and 90% for PETG, while manufacturer data lists 86% for VIVAK and 91% for Spectar Clear. Thickness, haze, color, surface and test method affect these measurements. See the representative comparison, VIVAK data and Spectar data. Transmission alone does not capture perceived clarity: haze, gloss, thickness, edge finish and reflections also matter.

Acrylic: best for appearance, not impact abuse

Acrylic is a strong choice for display windows, picture covers, illuminated signs, lenses and decorative glazing where appearance and clarity matter. It is generally harder at the surface than uncoated PC, and an edge can be polished to a clean finish. Acrylic is also commonly suited to laser cutting and engraving when the sheet grade and equipment are appropriate.

Its trade-off is brittle failure. It can chip, crack or craze if struck, drilled poorly, clamped under stress or exposed to an incompatible solvent. That does not mean acrylic cannot carry a load: its suitability depends on thickness, support, geometry and design. For an exposed guard or safety screen, consider what happens if the panel is hit and whether brittle fracture is acceptable.

For outdoor signs or glazing, start with an appropriate outdoor acrylic grade and check the manufacturer’s data for the intended exposure and service life. “Acrylic” by itself is not a weathering specification.

Polycarbonate: best for impact and higher heat

When a transparent panel may be hit, dropped against, vandalized or exposed to cold-weather impact, polycarbonate is usually the strongest starting point. Its toughness also makes it useful for machine guards, protective covers and impact-resistant glazing. Suitable sheet can be machined and, in some applications, cold-formed. Fabrication guidance for Lexan sheet describes cold-forming applications; allowable curves still depend on the exact sheet and design.

PC’s common drawbacks are a softer, more scratch-prone surface and the need to choose carefully for outdoor exposure. For long-term sunlight, specify a UV-stabilized, capped or coated product intended for that environment. Some LEXAN grades are designed for improved outdoor weathering; unprotected PC should not be treated as equivalent. Hard-coated versions can improve abrasion resistance, but coatings may affect forming, chemical compatibility and finishing.

Polycarbonate generally handles heat better than acrylic and PETG, but no broad temperature number replaces the product’s service data. A loaded panel, an unsupported panel, a brief temperature spike and continuous service are different conditions. For construction use near heaters, engines, lights or hot enclosures, check the exact rating and the expected load.

PETG: best for many formed parts

PETG often makes sense when the shape is the hard part of the job. It is widely used for thermoformed displays, trays, covers, barriers and enclosures, including parts with deeper draws or more complex geometry. It can also be routed, bent, printed or die-cut in suitable grades. Eastman describes Spectar as suitable for deep thermoforming, while Plaskolite gives a forming range for VIVAK; follow the exact manufacturer’s process guidance rather than transferring settings between products.

PETG may offer a useful balance of toughness, clarity and chemical resistance, but it is not “chemical-proof” or unbreakable. A commercial chemical-resistance table such as VIVAK’s identifies both compatible and incompatible substances. Check the chemical, concentration, temperature, contact time and whether the part is bent, drilled or clamped. Stress can make a sheet fail even when an unstressed sample tolerates the same liquid.

Heat is an important limit. VIVAK lists heat-deflection temperatures of 157°F at 264 psi and 164°F at 66 psi, and a forming range of about 280–320°F. Those are different measurements: a forming temperature is not a safe operating temperature. See the product data and test conditions before specifying a part exposed to heat.

Choose by application

Application Starting choice What to verify
Indoor sign, display window or picture cover Acrylic Required clarity, thickness, mounting and whether impact is likely.
Outdoor sign or glazing Outdoor-rated acrylic; UV-protected PC if impact resistance is also important. UV/weathering documentation, wind or other loads, expansion allowance and expected service life.
Machine guard or impact-prone cover Polycarbonate Applicable safety requirements, thickness, support, coating and chemical exposure.
Thermoformed retail display or cover PETG Draw depth, wall-thickness distribution, optics, process controls and service temperature.
Food display or formed tray A documented food-contact grade of PETG or another suitable polymer. Exact product certification, contact conditions, cleaning, inks, coatings, adhesives and jurisdiction.
Laser-cut decorative part Suitable acrylic, often cast for engraving or polished edges. Sheet grade, equipment compatibility, ventilation and manufacturer fabrication guidance.
Frequently cleaned barrier Often PETG or a specified coated product, depending on cleaner and impact risk. Compatibility with the actual disinfectant or cleaner, under stress, plus impact and scratch requirements.
Greenhouse, skylight or large panel No material can be selected on polymer name alone. Product data, spans, wind/snow loads, UV exposure, mounting and applicable building requirements.

For aquariums or other applications that hold water under sustained pressure, do not use this general comparison as a design recommendation. Panel thickness, support, joints, creep and the manufacturer’s intended use must be engineered for the actual load.

Fabrication and installation considerations

  • Cutting and machining: Use tooling and feeds suited to the exact sheet. Dull tools and excess heat can damage edges; acrylic may chip or crack, while PC can melt or produce gummy chips. Follow the sheet maker’s fabrication instructions.
  • Drilling and fastening: Holes and fasteners concentrate stress. Use appropriate clearance, edge distances, washers or gaskets and avoid over-tightening. Acrylic is particularly vulnerable to cracking around poorly made holes; other plastics can also craze or fail under stress.
  • Thermal movement: All three expand more than glass or metal. Large panels need room to move, especially outdoors or in mixed-material frames. Do not trap a sheet rigidly as though it were glass.
  • Forming: PETG is often the easiest starting point for deep forming, but heating and draw conditions affect wall thickness and clarity. Acrylic and PC can also be formed with grade-specific processes. Uneven heating, tooling marks and cooling stress can distort a clear part.
  • Bonding: Acrylic often works with solvent cement systems designed for PMMA. PC and PETG need compatible adhesives and surface preparation. A clear-looking bond can still craze or fail later; test on production-grade material.
  • Protective film: Keep and remove film according to the maker’s handling instructions. Film, coatings and adhesives are product-specific; prolonged heat or sun can make film harder to remove.
  • Laser work: Acrylic is common for laser cutting, but settings and safety depend on the material and equipment. Do not substitute PVC: chlorine-containing plastics can produce hazardous fumes and damage equipment. Evaluate PETG and PC only with manufacturer guidance and suitable equipment and ventilation.

Cleaning, safety and specification checks

A cleaner that is harmless to glass can damage a plastic panel. Depending on the material and conditions, incompatible products can cause haze, softening, discoloration, crazing or stress cracking. Consult the exact chemical-resistance data and test a sample that is mounted or stressed as the real part will be. This matters especially for barriers, machine windows and panels cleaned frequently with disinfectants.

For food contact, verify the exact sheet grade and finished assembly for the intended direct or indirect contact, temperature, repeated-use conditions and cleaning regime. Colorants, coatings, inks, adhesives and fabrication residues can affect suitability. VIVAK documentation, for example, identifies food-contact compliance for the relevant product; that does not certify every PETG sheet. See the VIVAK product information and Spectar product information.

Fire behavior is separate from heat resistance and varies by grade, thickness and test. Do not call any of these materials fireproof or assume one family has a universal fire rating. Specify the classification required for the project and check the documentation for the exact product; SABIC’s product information, for example, describes particular flame-retardant grades rather than all polycarbonate.

Buying the right sheet

Ask suppliers to quote the same thickness, dimensions, grade, color, finish and coating so the comparison is meaningful. Include cut-to-size work, forming, edge finishing, packaging, shipping, installation and likely replacement in the project cost. Basic acrylic is often less expensive than PC, but market prices vary; PETG’s forming advantages may reduce waste or fabrication effort in some jobs. Neither tendency guarantees the lowest installed cost.

Before ordering, confirm:

  1. The actual product and grade—not just “acrylic,” “Lexan” or “PETG.”
  2. Thickness, dimensions, support and the loads the panel must withstand.
  3. Indoor or outdoor exposure, UV protection and expected service life.
  4. Continuous and peak temperatures, including solar heating or nearby equipment.
  5. Every cleaner, chemical or adhesive that may contact the sheet.
  6. Fabrication method, required edge finish, forming depth and optical quality.
  7. Any required food-contact, fire, glazing, safety or building-code documentation.
  8. Manufacturer installation, expansion, cleaning and maintenance instructions.

Recycling claims also depend on local collection and sorting, product additives, coatings and whether the finished item is mixed with other materials. Check local rules rather than assuming a polymer name guarantees curbside acceptance.
