5. HIKMICRO M11W: Best wide-angle option for large equipment
The M11W pairs a 192 × 144 detector with a 37.5° × 28.5° field of view. Its wide-angle design makes it a specialist choice for capturing large equipment surfaces or a broad panel from nearby, rather than a universal pick for close detail.
Choose it for: preliminary scans of large switchboards, electrical rooms and wide targets where framing the whole area is useful. Trade-off: Wide coverage does not add detector detail; it can make small terminals harder to inspect. Current US price, stock, warranty and complete current feature set were not verified, so consult the datasheet and local supplier before deciding.
How to choose a thermal camera for electrical work
Resolution, target size and working distance
Resolution tells you how many detector pixels represent the scene, but it does not tell you by itself whether a small connection will be measurable. As a rough selection guide, 80 × 60 to 120 × 90 can suit basic screening of large, nearby targets; 160 × 120 is a more useful floor for general troubleshooting; 256 × 192 is a capable midrange for many panels and equipment; and 320 × 240 or more helps with crowded panels, smaller components, longer working distances and documentation. Very high resolutions can be worthwhile for detailed industrial, utility or long-distance work, but may be excessive for routine close-range checks.
Check the camera’s IFOV (instantaneous field of view), lens and minimum focus distance against the target and the safe position from which you must scan. A high-resolution sensor cannot compensate for standing too far away: if a hot terminal occupies only part of a pixel, its apparent temperature can be averaged with the cooler surroundings. Focus carefully before interpreting readings. Fluke’s TiS55+ and TiS75+ list manual focus, 1.91 mRad IFOV and 0.15 m minimum focus distance.

Fluke’s selection checklist recommends at least 120 × 120 resolution, sensitivity of 100 mK or better, about a 20° or wider field of view, one-handed operation, IP54 protection, drop resistance, annotation and reporting software. Treat those as a practical starting point from a manufacturer—not a universal standard or proof that a camera suits every job. See Fluke’s inspection checklist.
Sensitivity (NETD) is not a substitute for detail
NETD describes the smallest temperature difference a camera may distinguish under stated test conditions; lower millikelvin values generally indicate greater thermal sensitivity. A 40 mK camera is theoretically more sensitive than a 60 mK camera, but manufacturers may use different test conditions. Sensitivity also does not guarantee a useful image: focus, detector resolution, distance, emissivity, atmosphere and processing all matter. In this shortlist, Fluke lists 40 mK for both TiS models and FLIR lists less than 50 mK for the TG298.
Field of view, temperature range and frame rate
A wide field of view helps when framing a whole panel or large machine from close range; a narrower view can better isolate a component. Choose based on target size and the distance permitted by the site procedure. Likewise, a maximum temperature of 1,080 °C is relevant to very hot industrial processes, not automatically an advantage for routine electrical inspections.
Higher frame rates make moving scans look smoother. Many electrical targets are stationary, so focus, spatial detail and documentation may matter more. Regional models can differ: check the exact 9 Hz, 27 Hz or other configuration, local availability and applicable requirements before ordering.

Radiometric images and a useful inspection workflow
A thermal image that preserves temperature data can be more useful later than a picture that only records colors. For professional work, consider adjustable emissivity, measurement markers or areas, visible-light references, annotations, asset IDs, and practical transfer and reporting options. The complete workflow is: capture thermal and visible images, identify the asset and location, record notes and operating conditions, review measurement settings, export the report, compare with prior inspections and track corrective work.
Fluke highlights annotation, asset tagging and IR-Fusion; Testo emphasizes image assignment and report templates. These are manufacturer-described functions, not a guarantee that every software feature is included at no extra cost. Confirm subscriptions, app compatibility, export formats, calibration and service support, replacement batteries and other ownership costs for the exact model and region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a thermal camera safely and consistently
Thermal imaging can help find an abnormal temperature pattern; it does not make electrical work safe. A thermal camera is not a voltage tester, current clamp, insulation tester, phase analyzer or arc-flash detector. Do not open energized equipment unless you are qualified and the site’s procedure, PPE, boundaries and controls permit it. Follow the employer’s electrical-safety program and applicable local requirements; this overview is not a safety procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Before scanning: Establish the inspection objective and operating conditions. Note load, ambient temperature and relevant weather; know whether equipment needs to be energized or under a defined load for a meaningful comparison. Let the camera acclimate and select appropriate emissivity settings.
- During scanning: Work from a permitted safe position. Keep the lens clean, hold a consistent angle and distance, focus on the target, and compare like components under comparable loads. Capture a visible reference and asset ID for important findings.
- After scanning: Preserve radiometric files if later analysis may be needed. Record operating conditions, investigate anomalies using appropriate electrical measurements and physical inspection, and repeat the scan after corrective work under comparable conditions.
Shiny metal can reflect surrounding heat rather than accurately emit its own temperature. Sunlight, wind, moisture, viewing angle, distance and changing load can also skew readings. A thermal camera cannot see through an opaque panel cover. A single hot pixel or color patch does not establish a fault or its cause; compare patterns and verify findings using suitable methods.
For US electrical-maintenance programs, identify the applicable edition and requirements rather than citing NFPA 70B without a year. NFPA’s publication listing includes a 2026 edition alongside the 2023 edition; consult the current standard and the requirements that apply to your facility and jurisdiction. Check NFPA’s publication listing.
Common buying and inspection mistakes
- Shopping by pixel count alone: Match resolution and IFOV to target size and working distance, and account for focus, sensitivity and lens.
- Confusing enhanced output with native resolution: The TG298 is 160 × 120 native with 320 × 240 super-resolution output; the Testo 872s is 320 × 240 native with up to 640 × 480 SuperResolution.
- Scanning equipment without a meaningful load: The thermal pattern may not reveal a problem that appears only under operating conditions.
- Comparing unlike components: Account for phase, load, component design and ambient conditions before treating a difference as abnormal.
- Ignoring emissivity or reflections: Reflective surfaces can produce misleading apparent temperatures.
- Failing to focus or standing too far away: A blurred or spatially diluted target can make a reading unreliable.
- Treating the hottest spot as a diagnosis: A hot spot warrants investigation; it does not prove overload, a loose connection or imminent failure.
- Substituting thermal imaging for electrical tests: Use appropriate instruments and qualified inspection to confirm concerns.
When another tool is a better fit
Phone attachments such as the FLIR ONE Pro can suit occasional basic screening when portability and lower cost matter most. They are a weaker fit if you need an independent rugged instrument, dependable one-handed field use, asset management or repeatable professional reports. Pocket cameras such as the Fluke PTi120 trade some detail and focusing capability for portability. A single-point infrared thermometer may be enough when you need a spot temperature on an accessible target; it cannot show the temperature distribution across a panel or component.
For distant or very small targets, demanding industrial work or extensive documentation, consider a higher-resolution professional platform such as a FLIR T-Series model, after matching its capabilities and cost to the job. Solar inspections may call for a purpose-built workflow: Fluke’s PVA-1500 thermography kit combines a PV analyzer with a TiS75+ camera. If you lack suitable training or access to equipment, engaging a qualified thermography professional may be safer and more useful than buying a camera that does not fit the task.
