For a premium single soundbar, choose the Sonos Arc Ultra; for a complete surround package with a subwoofer and rear speakers, choose the Samsung HW-Q990F. Both reduce speaker-to-speaker wiring, but neither makes a typical TV setup cable-free: the main speaker connects to the TV by HDMI ARC/eARC or optical, and the wireless speakers still need power outlets. Apple HomePod and Roku options can work well, but only in their respective ecosystems.

In this guide, “wireless” means minimizing speaker-to-speaker signal cables. Usually, the soundbar still connects to the TV by HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. A wireless subwoofer or rear speaker receives audio without a long cable back to the bar, but it normally still plugs into a wall outlet. A full surround setup can therefore require power at the TV, beside the subwoofer, and behind the seating area.

- Wi-Fi system: Uses a home network and may support multiroom audio or services such as AirPlay 2. TV compatibility is often tied to an ecosystem.
- Bluetooth speaker: Pairs directly with some TVs, but compatibility, lip-sync performance, dialogue anchoring, and surround support vary.
If you want no cables at all, a conventional TV theater system is probably the wrong expectation: the main speaker, subwoofer, and rears generally need power, and the TV-to-speaker link is commonly wired.
Best premium one-bar choice: Sonos Arc Ultra
The Arc Ultra is the strongest fit for someone who wants one refined soundbar now and the option to add a subwoofer or wireless surrounds later. Sonos describes it as a 9.1.4 spatial-audio soundbar; it supports Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay 2. Independent testing has rated it highly for dialogue and television viewing. Those strengths make it a sensible premium pick for apartments and rooms where placing speakers behind the sofa is impractical.
It is not a complete surround package out of the box. There is no included subwoofer or rear pair, and a complete Sonos setup can become expensive as components are added. The bar has one HDMI connection, so users with several sources should plan to connect them to the TV and return audio through ARC/eARC. Sonos says Atmos requires HDMI ARC/eARC; optical can be used for less advanced audio formats with the appropriate adapter. Choose it if: You value dialogue, streaming TV, music, and gradual expansion more than surround speakers included in the box. Skip it if: You want maximum rear-channel immersion immediately, need multiple HDMI inputs, or want a low-cost upgrade.
Best complete surround package: Samsung HW-Q990F
The HW-Q990F is the better fit for movie and sports viewers who want a full system at once. Samsung specifies an 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos package with a soundbar, subwoofer, and wireless rear speakers. Its main appeal is not just a large channel-count label: you get physical rear speakers as well as a subwoofer, rather than relying on a single bar to simulate surround. Samsung’s specification sheet lists HDMI ARC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay 2.

The rear speakers and subwoofer still need power, so check for outlets and sensible placement before buying. The bar and satellite speakers also take more space than a one-bar setup. Samsung ecosystem features such as Q-Symphony and wireless Dolby Atmos are compatibility-dependent and are most relevant with supported Samsung TVs; the bar can still connect to other TVs through standard HDMI audio. Samsung announced a US launch MSRP of $1,799 in 2025, but that is not a promise of today’s selling price. Choose it if: You want rear effects and bass in one purchase, have room for the components, and can place power outlets near the listening area. Skip it if: Your room is very small, you want a discreet single speaker, or you cannot power rear speakers.

Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar: compact premium alternative
The Bose Smart Ultra is an all-in-one Dolby Atmos soundbar with dialogue and sound-enhancement features. It is worth considering if you already use Bose products or want a smaller footprint than a full surround package. It does not include separate rear speakers or a subwoofer, and expansion adds cost. Testing comparisons find both it and the Arc Ultra capable, but the Bose’s height effect and value may be less compelling for buyers seeking immersive Atmos. Read the RTINGS review and direct comparison rather than treating either brand as universally better.
HomePod stereo pair with Apple TV 4K: best for Apple households
A pair of full-size HomePods can be a convincing TV-and-music setup if you already use Apple TV 4K. Apple supports HomePod home theater audio, including Dolby Atmos on supported setups, and Apple TV 4K models from the second generation onward support eARC for routing audio from other TV-connected devices. The setup is not equivalent to plugging any AirPlay speaker into any television: it requires Apple TV 4K, and Apple’s instructions specify using HomePod as the home theater speakers. Place the pair on either side of the TV. Follow Apple’s home theater guide and its setup instructions.
On Apple TV, assign the speakers and Apple TV to the same room, make the HomePod pair the default audio output, and for TV-connected device audio go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel and choose Play Television Audio. Connect Apple TV 4K to the TV’s eARC port and enable HDMI-CEC if needed. HomePod mini is not a substitute for full-size HomePod in Dolby surround use.

Roku Wireless Speakers: only for compatible Roku hardware
Roku Wireless Speakers are designed for Roku TV systems, Roku Streambar, Streambar Pro, or Roku Smart Soundbar. They are not universal Bluetooth TV speakers for Samsung, LG, Sony, or other televisions. Within a compatible Roku setup they offer a straightforward way to add stereo speakers; they can also play Bluetooth audio from a phone, tablet, or computer. Bose TV Speaker: basic dialogue help, not wireless TV theater
The Bose TV Speaker is a straightforward option if the main problem is hard-to-understand speech. It supports HDMI ARC or optical and includes dialogue mode. The TV connection is normally wired, and the bar does not provide Dolby Atmos or a true wireless surround system. It is a simpler category of product than the premium systems above, not a cheaper equivalent to them. See Bose’s product information.
Soundbar, stereo pair, or full surround?
- Pick a soundbar for clear, screen-centered dialogue, centralized volume control, simpler placement, and easier Dolby Atmos setup. A soundbar is usually the most practical answer if there is no space behind the sofa.
- Pick a stereo pair if music and left-right separation matter as much as TV, and you already have a compatible ecosystem such as Apple TV 4K plus HomePod. Stereo pairs can make dialogue feel less precisely anchored than a system with a center channel.
- Pick a full surround package for physical side/rear effects, cinematic impact, and larger rooms. Accept more setup, more cost, and more power outlets.
Do not buy by channel count alone. A 9.1.4 or 11.1.4 label describes channels and system layout, not a guaranteed result. Room shape, speaker placement, calibration, seating position, and content all affect what you hear.
Choose by your TV and room
- Samsung TV: The Q990F is especially attractive if your exact TV model supports Samsung features such as Q-Symphony or wireless Atmos. Those features are not universal across every Samsung TV year and model. The soundbar can also work through standard HDMI ARC/eARC with non-Samsung TVs.
- Apple TV 4K: Consider a HomePod pair if you want Apple integration and accept its ecosystem requirement. Otherwise, a conventional HDMI soundbar is more flexible.
- Roku TV: Roku Wireless Speakers may be the simplest match, but confirm your Roku device is on Roku’s supported list.
- Sony, LG, or another TV: Start with the TV’s ARC/eARC port and choose a soundbar that supports it. Do not assume a brand-specific feature works across brands.
- Small or apartment room: A one-bar option such as the Arc Ultra or Bose Smart Ultra avoids placing rear speakers. Room-size labels are not hard rules; prioritize clear placement, suitable volume, and space for the bar.
- Open-plan or vaulted room: Upward-firing Atmos and virtual surround can be less predictable where reflections are irregular or ceilings are high. Physical rear speakers may be a safer bet, provided they can be placed and powered properly.
Check the TV connection before you buy
Look at the TV’s ports and settings, not just the soundbar’s feature list.
- Find an HDMI port marked ARC or eARC. eARC is preferable for lossless formats and some advanced passthrough cases; ARC handles stereo, Dolby Digital, and many compressed surround formats.
- If there is no ARC/eARC, check for optical digital audio out. Optical is a dependable fallback for basic audio but does not carry every advanced format.
- Check whether the TV passes Dolby Atmos from its built-in apps and connected HDMI devices. Atmos support in the soundbar alone does not guarantee Atmos playback.
- Confirm Bluetooth audio output if you plan to use Bluetooth. A speaker and TV both having Bluetooth does not guarantee low-latency performance.
- Enable HDMI-CEC if you want the TV remote to control soundbar volume and power.
For Sonos Arc Ultra, Sonos specifies ARC/eARC for Dolby Atmos and allows optical with the appropriate adapter for other audio. Apple HomePod theater has a separate Apple TV 4K and eARC path. These are system requirements, not interchangeable connection recipes.

Connect a soundbar over HDMI ARC/eARC
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI port marked ARC/eARC to the TV’s HDMI port with the same label.
- In the TV sound settings, select the soundbar or receiver as the audio output.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV; the setting may have a brand-specific name.
- Set digital audio output to Auto, Passthrough, or the TV maker’s equivalent. If there is no sound, test PCM first.
- Play a known surround or Atmos source and check the soundbar app or display for the format it receives.
If there is no sound, confirm the cable is in the ARC/eARC ports rather than ordinary HDMI ports, re-enable CEC, and power-cycle the TV and bar. Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices to check for a CEC conflict. Update firmware. If ARC negotiation remains unreliable, try optical for basic audio. A TV with ARC but not eARC may work well for streaming and compressed surround while limiting lossless formats or certain connected-device scenarios.
Bluetooth: convenient fallback, not the default
Bluetooth can be adequate for casual viewing when the TV and speaker work well together and surround sound is not a priority. It is a less dependable choice for dialogue-critical viewing, Atmos, or a multi-speaker setup. Lip-sync performance depends on both the TV’s transmitter and the speaker’s receiver; the Bluetooth version printed on a product does not by itself establish compatibility or low latency. Samsung recommends Wi-Fi or optical/HDMI where available rather than relying on Bluetooth for TV audio; see Samsung’s Bluetooth pairing guidance.
If picture and speech do not sync, look for an audio-delay or lip-sync setting on the TV, use a speaker low-latency mode if available, and avoid adding another Bluetooth hop. If possible, switch to HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. Bluetooth performance varies, so do not assume every pairing will have delay—or that every pairing will be suitable.
Gaming, mounting, and room planning
eARC is an audio-return feature, not a guarantee that the soundbar can pass 4K/120Hz gaming video. If you use a current console, check the exact soundbar’s HDMI passthrough for 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision as relevant. When the bar lacks the needed video passthrough, connect the console directly to the TV and return audio over eARC. Test lip-sync with the actual TV, console, and game.
For a wall-mounted TV, check soundbar height and bracket compatibility, whether the bar blocks the screen or remote sensor, and whether upward-firing drivers have clear space above them. Before choosing a rear-speaker package, check the distance to outlets and whether the rear units can sit behind or beside the listening position. A “wireless” connection avoids running speaker signal wire across the room; it does not remove these installation constraints.
Buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming wireless means cable-free: Count the power outlets and identify the TV cable before ordering.
- Choosing Bluetooth solely because it pairs: Pairing success says nothing about lip sync, dialogue anchoring, or surround capability.
- Ignoring ARC/eARC: Check the TV ports and format passthrough first, especially if Atmos matters.
- Treating Atmos as a guarantee: Source format, TV settings, connection, placement, ceiling, and room acoustics all affect the result.
- Comparing a bar to a complete bundle by price alone: Include the cost of the subwoofer and rear speakers needed to make the systems comparable.
- Overlooking ecosystem limits: HomePod home theater requires Apple TV 4K; Roku Wireless Speakers require compatible Roku hardware; Samsung enhancements depend on compatible Samsung TVs.
How to decide
- Want one premium soundbar: Sonos Arc Ultra.
- Want a complete surround system now: Samsung HW-Q990F.
- Already use Apple TV 4K and prefer Apple: HomePod stereo pair.
- Own compatible Roku hardware: Roku Wireless Speakers.
- Primarily need clearer dialogue with a simple setup: Bose TV Speaker.
