A skewed projector image is usually caused by the projector not sitting level or not facing the screen squarely. First correct the projector’s position; then use lens shift, if available, to move the picture without digitally reshaping it. Use keystone or four-corner correction only for the remaining small error, then refocus and check the edges. This order usually gives a cleaner result than relying on a large digital correction.
Identify the distortion before adjusting anything
Put a grid or test pattern on screen. Straight lines and a visible border make it easier to tell whether the problem is image shape, position, focus, or scaling.

Keystone correction can make a distorted projection appear rectangular, but it does not physically square the projector to the screen. It digitally reshapes the picture to compensate for the angle.
Square up the projector first
- Make the setup stable. Put the projector on a level surface or check that its ceiling mount is secure and has not rotated. Use adjustable feet only for small leveling changes.
- Face the screen. Aim the lens toward the screen center, with the projector body and lens parallel to the screen surface as far as the installation permits. Avoid aiming diagonally across the room to compensate for an off-center position.
- Adjust placement, not just tilt. Move the projector left or right for a horizontal problem and higher or lower for a vertical one. A steep upward or downward angle tends to create more keystone distortion.
- Set the image size. Use the projector’s optical zoom, if it has one, and adjust throw distance to fit the screen. Zoom changes image size; it does not correct skew.
- Check the screen. Make sure the screen is taut, square, and mounted parallel to the projector. A bowed screen or irregular wall can make corners and focus look wrong even when the projector is aligned.
BenQ’s HT2060 manual explains that a projector and screen that are not perpendicular produce a trapezoidal image and recommends using the feet for fine adjustment. Epson likewise recommends placing the projector directly in front of the screen and aligning the lens with its center when possible (BenQ HT2060 manual; Epson placement guidance).

Use lens shift before keystone
Lens shift moves the projected image optically up, down, left, or right without digitally redrawing its shape. If your image is already rectangular but sits too high or low, lens shift is usually the better adjustment. It can also help when a ceiling-mounted projector must sit above the screen center. Its direction and range are limited by the model, however; it does not make every angled or off-center installation workable. Epson describes lens shift as a physical image-position adjustment that avoids the same kind of digital image alteration as keystone (Epson guide to image-position adjustment).
Keystone correction digitally reshapes the image to compensate for the projector’s angle. It is useful when you cannot fully reposition the unit, but it may reduce the active pixel area and make the corrected picture slightly smaller. The amount of visible impact depends on the projector, source resolution, and size of the correction; there is no universal percentage loss. Epson documents these effects for the projector family covered by its support instructions (Epson keystone instructions).

Practical order: physical position first, lens shift second, keystone last. This matters most for home theater, gaming, small text, and presentations, where softened detail or reduced image area is easier to notice.

Menu labels vary by brand, model, and firmware. Look for Keystone, H/V-Keystone, Geometry Correction, Image Shape, Quick Corner, Four Corner, Warping, or Screen Fit.

- Display a grid, test pattern, or image with straight borders.
- Disable auto-keystone temporarily if you want to make a precise manual adjustment; automatic correction may otherwise change the geometry again.
- Open the projector’s Menu, then look under Installation, Settings, Image, or Geometry Correction.
- Choose keystone or H/V-keystone. Adjust vertical correction until the top and bottom edges are parallel, then adjust horizontal correction until the sides are parallel. Change one axis at a time.
- Apply or save the change if prompted. Refocus, then inspect the center and all four corners with the grid still displayed.
For the Epson models covered by its instructions, the path is Menu → Installation → Geometry Correction → H/V-Keystone. Optoma’s general guidance gives Menu → Image I → Keystone as an example. These are model-specific examples, not universal paths (Epson; Optoma).
Correct the kind of skew you actually see. Vertical keystone will not solve a sideways angle, and horizontal keystone will not correct a top edge that is too narrow. If a small adjustment in one direction makes another edge look worse, stop and recheck physical alignment rather than pushing the controls farther.

Auto-keystone, manual keystone, and four-corner correction
- Auto-keystone is convenient for portable projectors that are moved often. Depending on the model, sensors or a camera may detect tilt and correct some shape or rotation errors. It can misread screen edges, a dark border, furniture, or the surrounding scene; its range and behavior vary. It cannot reposition the projector or fix an uneven screen. BenQ’s published correction angles illustrate why limits must be checked for the exact model: its GP100A and GV50 documentation describes different ranges and conditions, which should not be generalized to other projectors (GP100A guidance; GV50 guidance).
- Manual keystone gives you direct control and can be more predictable for a fixed installation, a dark-bordered screen, or an auto mode that repeatedly overshoots. Make only as much correction as needed.
- Four-corner or geometry correction lets you move corners independently. It can help when one corner is out of line and ordinary vertical or horizontal correction is not enough. It remains digital correction, not lens shift, and cannot make a curved surface flat. On some models, enabling it also disables controls such as zoom, aspect ratio, or image shift; check the manual. Optoma documents separate keystone and four-corner controls in its Smart Control instructions (Optoma Smart Control).
Large corrections can produce a smaller active picture or visible softness and scaling artifacts. A shadow or light border around the corrected image may also occur on some setups; user reports describe this, but it is not a universal specification or a guaranteed result (anecdotal example).

- Reset geometry controls. Reset or turn off auto-keystone, manual keystone, four-corner correction, warping, screen fit, and digital zoom. If image shift is interacting with a geometry mode, reset that too. Start again with the projector physically aligned.
- Check orientation and mounting. Look for an uneven table, loose or twisted mounting plate, projector body that is not square to the screen, or a lens that is blocked. Make sure the lens cover is fully open and the lens is clean.
- Inspect the projection surface. A wall may be bowed, angled, textured, or out of square. Check whether the screen is taut and whether its edges are parallel to the projector. Geometric adjustment cannot make a badly uneven surface optically flat.
- Separate shape from focus. If the grid is rectangular but one edge remains blurry, focus on the center and inspect the corners. Recheck projector tilt and extreme lens-shift positions, and allow the projector to warm up before final focus. Persistent one-sided softness may point to screen unevenness or optical alignment, not keystone.
- Check aspect ratio and signal scaling. If the image is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by bars but its edges are square, verify the projector’s aspect-ratio setting, source-device output resolution, scaling mode, and overscan. Geometry controls are not the fix for a mismatched source format.
- Check mode conflicts. Some models do not allow H/V-keystone to be combined with other image-shape methods. Epson documents such restrictions for specific models, so consult the manual for your projector before assuming controls are broken.
Contact the seller or manufacturer if the test pattern remains asymmetrical after geometry is reset and the projector is square, an edge stays curved or bowed, one side cannot focus under normal alignment, the shape changes as the unit warms up, the lens or mount is loose, or the projector was dropped. A photo alone is not enough to establish a defect: camera perspective, lens distortion in the phone camera, and an uneven wall can all make a sound projection appear skewed.

When to move or remount instead of correcting more
Use a small amount of keystone for a minor residual error. If the image needs heavy correction, the better long-term fix is usually to move or remount the projector, adjust the screen, or choose a projector whose throw distance, zoom, lens offset, and lens shift suit the room. Replacing the projector will not fix a crooked or bowed screen.
Lens shift is especially valuable for a fixed ceiling installation where the lens cannot sit on the screen’s centerline. Check the required shift in both directions, throw ratio and zoom range, mounting compatibility, and screen size before buying. For example, Epson lists vertical lens shift of −60% to +60% and horizontal shift of −24% to +24% for the Home Cinema 3800; those specifications apply to that model, not projectors generally (Epson specifications). The BenQ HT2060 has vertical lens shift and 1.3× zoom, but BenQ’s store material marks it discontinued, so it is not a straightforward current new-model recommendation (BenQ HT2060; BenQ availability note).
Auto-keystone is useful as a setup convenience, particularly for a portable unit, but it should not be the main reason to choose a projector for a permanent installation. A suitable mount or replacement screen may solve the geometry problem more cleanly and at lower cost than replacing otherwise suitable equipment.
