To add rear speakers to most Samsung soundbars, use the compatible Samsung Wireless Rear Speaker Kit—or the rear speakers supplied with the soundbar. Ordinary passive speakers and third-party Bluetooth speakers generally cannot connect directly. Check compatibility against your soundbar’s exact model number before buying: Samsung rear kits are model-specific.
For a compatible kit, assemble and power the speakers, use the soundbar remote’s ID SET procedure if they do not pair automatically, and wait for a solid-blue LINK light. That confirms a wireless connection, not that your TV is sending surround audio; you’ll also need suitable multichannel content and the right TV audio-output settings.
1. Confirm the rear-speaker kit matches your soundbar
Find the exact model number on the soundbar’s label or in its settings or documentation. Then check Samsung’s rear-speaker compatibility information and your soundbar’s user manual. Use the manual for your specific model if its instructions differ from Samsung’s general setup steps. Check the regional model suffix, too: U.S. listings such as models ending in /ZA may not apply to every market.
Examples from Samsung’s U.S. compatibility information illustrate why you should not choose by brand name alone: SWA-9200S is listed for selected models such as HW-Q600B, HW-Q60B, HW-S60B, HW-B650, HW-B550 and HW-B450; SWA-9100S is listed for a different selection of Q-, B-, A- and S-series models; and SWA-9500S appears on lists for selected Atmos-capable soundbars. Samsung also lists SWA-9000S and SWA-8500S for some older generations. The lists change across model years and markets. Samsung’s SWA-9500S page, for example, names selected newer models as well as earlier ones. Do not assume one kit fits every Samsung soundbar.

Most soundbars do not have the speaker terminals and amplification needed to drive arbitrary passive surround speakers. Samsung’s rear kits pair with supported soundbars through Samsung’s ID SET system, not ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Some soundbars may also need a wireless dongle; check the soundbar manual.
2. Identify your kit’s setup

Before you start, have the exact soundbar model, the compatible kit, its cables and receiver (if supplied), power outlets, and the soundbar remote with working batteries. Keep the rear system within a reasonable wireless range while pairing. If you are setting up TV surround, also check that the TV-to-soundbar connection and audio output can carry multichannel sound.
3. Assemble a receiver-based kit
- Connect the gray speaker plug to the gray jack on the wireless receiver and the blue plug to the blue jack.
- Connect each cable to the rear speaker marked for its channel; keep gray and blue matched to their corresponding speakers.
- For bare wire, put the red and black conductors in the matching red and black terminals. Open the clamp, insert the exposed metal wire, then close it so it grips metal—not insulation.
- Connect the receiver’s power cord and plug it into an outlet.
Incorrect color matching can reverse the rear channels. A clamp gripping insulation can cause weak or missing sound. For a kit such as the SWA-9500S that does not use the usual receiver, follow its own manual rather than these receiver wiring steps.

4. Pair the speakers
Speakers supplied with the soundbar are usually factory-paired. Plug them in and allow time for the connection indicator to settle. For a separately purchased kit, or if the LINK light is blinking after a reset, use Samsung’s general ID SET procedure:

- Turn the soundbar off with its remote or Power button.
- On the remote, press and hold VOL or Up for about 5–6 seconds, until ID SET appears on the soundbar display.
- Turn the soundbar on again and wait for the rear system’s LINK indicator to stop blinking and glow solid blue.
The button and indicator behavior can vary by model. Some soundbars have no text display, and some use a different sequence; follow the model-specific manual if ID SET does not appear. A blinking LINK light can mean the system is unpaired, but incompatibility is also possible—repeating the pairing process cannot make an unsupported kit work.
5. Enable and adjust rear-speaker output
On remotes with a Sound Control button, press it repeatedly to cycle through available controls until rear-speaker settings appear. Use the directional buttons to switch the rear speakers on or off; press Sound Control again to adjust their level. Samsung’s general support instructions describe a range of −6 to +6, but the available controls and labels depend on the soundbar. Some newer models offer settings through SmartThings; not every model has the same app controls.
Raise the rear level temporarily if you need to check that sound is coming through, then set it to a comfortable level for your room and content. Maximum level is not automatically the correct setting.

6. Check for actual surround sound
A solid-blue LINK light shows that the rear system has connected to the soundbar. It does not prove that the soundbar is receiving or decoding surround channels. Rear speakers may be quiet during dialogue, stereo music, menus, or scenes with little rear-channel information. Stereo may be played through the rears as duplicated or processed sound rather than as discrete left- and right-surround channels.

To test the system:
- Play a movie or other source known to contain Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Atmos audio that your soundbar supports.
- Check the TV and source-device audio menus. If available, use a compatible bitstream or passthrough output instead of forcing two-channel PCM.
- Check the soundbar’s information display or TV audio menu to see what format is reaching it.
- Temporarily raise the rear level and listen during a scene with clear ambient or rear-channel effects.
HDMI ARC/eARC is generally preferable when available for compatible audio formats, but the soundbar, TV, source device, connection path and content must all support the format you want. Adding rear speakers alone cannot create discrete surround detail absent from the audio signal. Samsung also notes that a 2.0 soundbar may play audio through additional speakers without producing separate multichannel surround in the same way as a system with multichannel processing.

The LINK light keeps blinking
- Recheck the exact soundbar model against Samsung’s compatibility list and manual.
- Make sure the receiver or speakers are powered, then power-cycle the soundbar and rear system.
- Repeat ID SET using the button and sequence specified for your model.
- Bring the rear system closer to the soundbar during pairing. Move it away from possible interference sources such as a Wi-Fi router or cordless-phone base.
If the light still blinks, verify compatibility before treating the kit as faulty. Samsung’s setup and compatibility guidance and the soundbar’s manual take priority over a seller’s general claim that a kit “works with Samsung.”
The LINK light is solid blue, but there is no rear audio
Make sure rear output is not set to Off. Test with known multichannel content, check that the TV or source is not sending only two-channel PCM, and verify the sound mode and audio path. During ordinary dialogue or stereo content, quiet rears may be expected.

Only one rear speaker works
Check that gray and blue plugs are in the matching receiver jacks and that each cable reaches the correctly labeled speaker. Confirm the red and black conductors are secured, with clamps touching exposed metal rather than insulation. Check channel or balance settings if available.

The speakers connect but sound too quiet
First test with a known multichannel soundtrack and check the TV output format. Then raise the rear level temporarily and confirm speaker placement and orientation. The mix, sound mode and room all affect rear volume; the speakers are not intended to play as loudly or continuously as the front soundbar in every scene.
ID SET never appears
Check the soundbar manual for the correct remote button and timing. Confirm you are using the soundbar’s remote, the soundbar is off, and the remote batteries work. Screenless models may indicate pairing through lights rather than text.
You bought the wrong kit
Do not assume another Samsung kit will substitute. Check the model number and regional suffix, then compare the exact kit against Samsung’s list and the soundbar manual. Older SWA-9000S or SWA-8500S stock may be intended for older generations; a newer SWA-9500S is not a universal upgrade.
When a different system makes more sense
If the exact compatible kit is unavailable or costs close to a complete replacement package, compare the total cost with a soundbar that includes rear speakers. Replacing a basic 2.0 soundbar may also be the better route if your goal is discrete multichannel surround or Atmos rather than simply more room-filling sound. A conventional AV receiver and passive speakers offer broader brand choice and upgrade flexibility, but require more wiring and setup. Choose a third-party speaker system only when the soundbar manufacturer explicitly documents support for it.
Before purchasing a used or marketplace kit, confirm the exact model and that its receiver, power cable and speaker wires are included where required. Regional variants and incomplete kits can turn a seemingly compatible purchase into an expensive dead end.
