The best inverter for an air conditioner is a pure-sine-wave model matched to the AC’s voltage, maximum running load and compressor-starting demand. For a small 120 V AC, a 2,000–3,000 W inverter can be a practical starting range, but the unit’s electrical data—not its BTU rating—decides what will work. A 240 V central AC needs compatible 120/240 V equipment and usually professional installation.

First, clarify what “inverter” means

An inverter converts battery DC power into the AC electricity an air conditioner uses. It is not the same thing as an “inverter air conditioner,” whose variable-speed compressor is electronically controlled. Your backup system might be a standalone inverter with a separate battery bank, an inverter/charger, a portable power station with a built-in battery and inverter, or a solar-plus-battery system.

Standalone inverter

This is a flexible choice for an RV, cabin, or permanent battery installation. It needs a properly sized battery bank, DC cables, overcurrent protection, ventilation, and a safe installation. Higher-power systems can draw hundreds of amps on the DC side, so cable and fuse selection are not minor details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inverter/charger

An inverter/charger converts battery power to AC and charges the batteries from utility power or a generator. Some models can pass through incoming AC power and switch to battery when that source fails. This can suit a permanent home or RV installation better than a basic inverter; see Eaton’s inverter buying guide.

Portable power station

A power station packages a battery, inverter, charging electronics, and outlets in one unit. It is convenient for portable ACs and some window units, but check its actual outlet voltage, continuous output, surge duration, battery discharge limit, and charging options. A large watt-hour figure alone does not prove it can start a compressor.

Vehicle accessory-socket inverter

A standard cigarette-lighter outlet is generally unsuitable for an air conditioner. For example, a 1,500 W AC load at 12 V requires more than 125 A before inverter losses; startup can demand much more. Heavy-duty inverters connect directly to an appropriately designed battery system, not an accessory socket.

The three numbers that decide whether it will work

Running watts: can it keep the AC on?

The inverter’s continuous output must exceed the AC’s maximum running demand plus other loads that may operate at the same time. Check both the inverter’s watt and VA limits if the AC data is expressed in VA. Avoid planning to run continuously at the inverter’s absolute limit: heat, battery voltage sag, and concurrent loads can reduce available headroom.

Startup demand: can it start the compressor?

Compressor startup can briefly demand far more power than normal operation. Find the AC’s LRA (locked-rotor amps) or manufacturer-supplied starting watts, then compare it with the inverter’s surge rating and the duration for which that rating is available. A large “peak” number without a time specification is not enough. Eaton notes that some inverter products support brief peaks up to about twice continuous output, but that general observation does not guarantee compatibility with a particular AC.

Samlex describes compressor-based equipment as potentially requiring roughly five to seven times running power at startup. That is a screening estimate, not a replacement for the AC’s LRA or measured data. Its inverter manual also uses a factor of five for air conditioners. The actual requirement varies by model and conditions.

Battery watt-hours: how long can it run?

Inverter watts determine whether the AC can operate; battery watt-hours determine how long it can operate. A power station can have ample stored energy and still fail to start an AC if its inverter or battery cannot deliver the required instantaneous power.

How to find the AC’s electrical requirements

Use evidence in this order: the AC nameplate, its installation manual, the manufacturer’s electrical data sheet, or a clamp-meter measurement taken by a qualified person. A rough estimate is a last resort, not a design value. Record:

  • Voltage and phase: commonly 120 V for smaller equipment or 208/230/240 V for larger systems.
  • Rated watts or rated cooling amps, plus maximum operating amps if listed.
  • Compressor LRA or starting watts.
  • Whether listed power covers the full system, including indoor and outdoor fans.
  • BTU capacity and model number for locating the right technical documentation.

BTUs describe cooling capacity, not a unique electrical load. Two units with the same BTU rating can differ in efficiency, compressor design, voltage, and startup behavior. Do not select an inverter from a tonnage-to-VA rule alone; approximate tonnage recommendations, such as those in this dealer guide, are not universal engineering requirements.

Calculate the inverter size

  1. Establish maximum running watts. Use manufacturer-listed watts where available. If you have only voltage and amps, volts × amps gives volt-amperes (VA); real watts also depend on power factor, so do not treat that product as exact watts for compressor equipment.
  2. Add simultaneous loads. Include any refrigerator, blower, lights, sump pump, internet equipment, medical devices, or other loads that may be running at the same time.
  3. Check startup demand. Use the AC’s LRA or manufacturer-supplied starting watts. If neither is available, an estimate can screen options but cannot confirm that a system will start reliably.
  4. Check surge duration and system limits. Confirm that the surge rating lasts long enough for compressor startup and applies at your battery voltage. Ensure the battery, cables, fuse, and connections can deliver the current.
  5. Allow sensible headroom. Approximately 20–25% headroom above expected continuous demand can help accommodate heat, voltage sag, and modest additional loads. It does not replace adequate startup capability.

Example: a 120 V window AC

Polaris gives an illustrative reference value of 1,200 rated watts plus 3,600 additional starting watts for a 10,000-BTU window AC. Those figures describe an example, not every unit of that size. For that example, choose continuous output above 1,200 W plus any concurrent loads, and verified surge capacity sufficient for the compressor’s startup demand plus loads already running. A 2,000 W inverter with only a brief 3,000 W peak could be unreliable; a pure-sine inverter around 2,000–2,500 W continuous with an adequate documented surge may be a better candidate, subject to the actual AC data. See Polaris’ AC load and operating guidance.

Example: a central AC

Polaris’ reference table lists a 24,000-BTU central AC at 3,800 rated watts plus 11,400 additional starting watts. These are illustrative values, not a universal central-AC specification. A central unit may require 240 V split-phase output as well as substantial startup capacity; a 120 V-only power station cannot directly power a 240 V compressor, regardless of its battery size.

Choose pure sine wave for compressor equipment

Pure-sine-wave output is the recommended default for air-conditioner compressors. It more closely resembles utility AC and is generally the appropriate choice for demanding motor-driven appliances. Eaton’s buying guide favors pure sine for demanding equipment, while APC’s UPS guidance cautions that refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment may require a manufacturer-approved UPS solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid modified-sine and square-wave models for compressor loads unless the AC manufacturer explicitly approves them. The question is not whether every such inverter will immediately damage every AC; it is whether the appliance is designed to operate correctly with that waveform. Check waveform quality, total harmonic distortion, voltage regulation, and frequency stability.

Fixed-speed and variable-speed ACs start differently

Fixed-speed compressor

A fixed-speed unit switches its compressor on and off and can have a high startup surge. A marginal inverter may run the unit after it starts but trip when the compressor cycles. For eligible systems, a professionally installed soft-start device may reduce that startup burden.

Variable-speed or “inverter” compressor

A variable-speed AC ramps compressor speed and can place less stress on the power source during startup. But its maximum input can still be substantial. Size for the manufacturer’s maximum electrical demand, not its lowest advertised or observed wattage. “Inverter AC” describes the compressor control; it does not mean the unit can run from any battery inverter.

Size the battery for the runtime you need

A practical first estimate is:

Runtime (hours) ≈ usable battery Wh × inverter efficiency ÷ AC running watts

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a battery bank, nominal energy in watt-hours is battery voltage × amp-hours. Schneider’s battery-sizing guidance likewise uses watts multiplied by hours to estimate energy and notes the importance of reserve for large loads and startup. Real runtime also depends on usable depth of discharge, temperature, battery age, cable losses, AC cycling, and the difference between maximum and average AC draw.

Worked estimate

Suppose a 1,200 W AC runs for four hours. It consumes 4,800 Wh at the AC. At an assumed 90% inverter efficiency, the battery must deliver about 5,333 Wh. If you plan to use only 80% of nominal battery capacity, the bank would need roughly 6,667 Wh nominal. This is a calculation under stated assumptions, not a runtime promise. If a variable-speed unit averages 600 W in the same conditions, its energy use would be about half as much, but it still must meet maximum and startup requirements.

12 V, 24 V, and 48 V battery systems

For a 2,000 W AC load at 90% inverter efficiency, approximate DC current is 185 A at 12 V, 93 A at 24 V, or 46 A at 48 V. Higher battery voltage reduces current, cable size, voltage drop, and connection stress; it does not reduce the total energy required. Follow inverter and battery manufacturer limits when designing the bank.

LFP versus lead-acid batteries

  • LiFePO₄ (LFP): Often offers more usable capacity per nominal rating, lower weight than lead-acid for comparable energy, and strong cycle-life potential. It costs more upfront, needs an appropriate battery-management system, may restrict charging at low temperatures, and must match the inverter’s voltage and communication requirements.
  • Lead-acid: Usually has a lower initial cost and broad availability, but is heavier. Preserving battery life generally means using a smaller share of nominal capacity; voltage sag under high current can also be more consequential. Ventilation and maintenance needs depend on battery type.

There is no universal battery count: voltage, amp-hours, chemistry, allowable depth of discharge, and discharge-current rating all matter.

Check 120 V and 240 V before buying

Do not assume an inverter’s total wattage means it can power a central AC. Verify the AC voltage, inverter output voltage, output amperage, outlet type, whether 120/240 V is available simultaneously, neutral requirements, and whether the AC is hardwired. A 120 V-only unit cannot run a 240 V central AC just because its watt rating is high. A 240 V-only output may likewise be unsuitable for a 120 V window unit without properly designed equipment.

For a permanently wired central AC, have a licensed electrician confirm the inverter configuration and install an approved transfer switch or home-integration system. Never backfeed a home through a wall outlet.

Choose the system type for the job

Option Best for Main advantage Main drawback
Portable power station Window AC, portable AC, or a compatible smaller mini-split Integrated, quick to set up Can be expensive for long runtime; voltage and output options may be limited
Dedicated inverter with LFP batteries Frequent or permanent backup Flexible, expandable, and serviceable Needs system design, high-current wiring, and installation
Inverter/charger Home, RV, or cabin circuits needing charging and transfer Can combine charging, inverter operation, and automatic transfer More complex and costly
Generator Long outages and high loads Fuel can provide energy beyond a battery’s stored capacity Noise, emissions, maintenance, and refueling
Solar plus battery Planned off-grid use or recurring backup Can recharge from solar Higher upfront cost and weather-dependent charging
Soft-start plus inverter Eligible fixed-speed central AC with adequate running power Can reduce compressor starting demand Does not reduce running energy and is not suitable for every system

For product selection, compare specifications rather than treating any one model as universally best. For example, the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 product information describes a 4,096 Wh LFP power station with 4,000 W continuous output and 120/240 V capability; its specification page also lists 8,000 W surge. These figures do not establish compatibility with a particular central AC: confirm its LRA, circuit, transfer equipment, and installation requirements. Prices and availability can change.

The U.S. BLUETTI AC200L manual specifies 120 V output and 2,400 W total output, with overload capability of 2,520–3,000 W for up to two minutes and 3,000–3,600 W for up to five seconds. That makes the documented duration as important as the peak figure when comparing it with a compressor’s startup demand; it is not a 240 V central-AC solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a soft-start device helps

A soft-start device can reduce startup current on some fixed-speed central ACs, potentially allowing a correctly sized inverter or generator to start a compressor that otherwise trips the system. It does not reduce continuous running watts or create more battery energy. It must be compatible with the compressor and control system, and a qualified HVAC technician should determine whether it is appropriate. It cannot fix wrong voltage, undersized cables, inadequate continuous output, or insufficient battery capacity.

Operate the AC without provoking a trip

  1. Start the inverter, generator, or power station and let it stabilize; follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Switch off unnecessary loads before starting the AC.
  3. Start the AC and watch for alarms, a trip, or severe voltage sag.
  4. Add other loads only after the compressor is running normally.
  5. Avoid rapid off/on cycling. Polaris advises bringing a generator to normal operating temperature before applying the AC load and waiting at least two minutes before manually restarting an AC; hotter conditions may require longer.

Troubleshoot shutdowns and failed starts

The AC starts, then shuts down

  • Check for inverter overheating or a high-temperature protection event.
  • Check battery state of charge and voltage under load; a depleted or undersized bank may sag into low-voltage cutoff.
  • Confirm that AC demand plus other loads stays within continuous output.
  • Inspect DC cable length, gauge, fuse, and connections for excessive voltage drop or a poor connection.
  • Consider whether high outdoor temperature or frequent compressor cycling is increasing demand.

The inverter trips even though its peak rating looks high

  • Check the surge duration and the battery voltage at which the rating applies.
  • Confirm the battery and DC path can provide the required current.
  • Compare the AC’s actual LRA with the inverter capability, including other loads already running.
  • Confirm voltage and phase compatibility; a 240 V AC cannot run from a 120 V-only output.

Stop if equipment becomes hot

If cables, plugs, batteries, or the inverter become hot or emit an odor, stop operation and have the system inspected. Do not keep resetting a tripping inverter or bypass its protection.

Buying checklist

  • Pure-sine-wave output, unless the AC manufacturer approves another waveform.
  • Correct voltage, phase, outlet or hardwire arrangement, and required neutral configuration.
  • Continuous watt and VA limits above the AC’s maximum running load plus simultaneous loads.
  • Documented surge watts and duration that cover compressor startup.
  • Battery voltage, usable watt-hours, discharge-current rating, and permitted depth of discharge.
  • Compatible cables, fuses, battery-management system, and low-voltage cutoff behavior.
  • Thermal limits and performance under the expected ambient conditions.
  • Recharge options and charging rate for utility, generator, or solar power.
  • Transfer-switch compatibility and professional installation for fixed wiring.
  • Safety certifications, warranty, and service support appropriate to the installation.
