Verdict: Gosund’s 16-amp smart outlet looked like a good-value buy in a 2019 hands-on review, but it is difficult to recommend as a new purchase in 2026 unless you can verify the exact model, regional voltage, certification, app compatibility, and seller support. The “16A” label alone is not enough: the current official Gosund SP111 is an EU/FR 230V model, while its listed U.S. WP3 is a 120V, 10A plug. For U.S. buyers, skip any listing that does not clearly identify its model and voltage.
What exactly is the Gosund 16A outlet?
The name in the 2019 review does not establish a model number. That matters because Gosund sells plugs for different electrical markets, and the same current rating does not make them interchangeable. The current official SP111 listing describes an EU/FR 230V, 16A plug. Its official WP3 listing describes a U.S. 120V, 10A plug. Both pages showed the products as sold out when checked for this review; the official Gosund catalog does not establish a currently available U.S. 16A model.

Before buying a marketplace listing, ask for clear photos of the plug’s rating label, the model number, the certification marks, and the box or manual. Check whether it is a single outlet, a dual outlet, or another product entirely. A seller title, stock photo, or merged marketplace reviews may combine details from different Gosund models.
What the 2019 hands-on review found
Phandroid’s September 10, 2019 review described the outlet as an inexpensive way to add remote switching and automation to ordinary appliances. The reviewer said two units could fit side by side in a standard outlet and found the front physical button accessible. Those are that reviewer’s observations of the unit tested at the time, not fresh testing of a product currently for sale.

The review is useful as a historical account of setup and features, but it does not establish the tested model number, current app support, certification, long-term reliability, electrical or thermal performance, or what happens after a power outage. It should not be read as a current product recommendation or a safety test.
What a smart outlet can—and cannot—do
A smart outlet usually switches power to its receptacle. Depending on the model and app, it may offer remote on/off control, repeating schedules, countdown timers, voice commands, and scenes or grouped-device control. Energy monitoring is model-specific; the current SP111 listing advertises it, but that does not confirm the feature on an unidentified older plug.

Switching the power does not give an appliance new controls. A smart outlet cannot normally change a fan’s speed, set a coffee maker’s temperature, or make an appliance restart if that appliance requires someone to press an electronic power button. It also does not replace an appliance’s thermostat or safety systems. Test whether both the plug and connected appliance return to the desired state after power is interrupted before relying on a schedule.

What “16 amp” means—and why it is not a safety guarantee
Amps alone do not tell you whether a plug suits your country or a particular appliance. For a 120V U.S. supply, 120V × 16A equals a theoretical 1,920W. For a 230V supply, 230V × 16A equals 3,680W. The 2019 review’s “almost 2,000 watts” framing matches the 120V calculation, but Gosund’s current official SP111 16A listing is for an EU/FR 230V product. Do not infer U.S. compatibility from the number 16A.

These calculations are theoretical equivalents, not recommended continuous loads. The plug’s own rating, the receptacle, cord, circuit, local electrical code, and appliance manufacturer’s instructions all matter. Motors may draw a startup surge, and heating appliances can present additional risks. TP-Link’s general smart-plug guidance advises against operating a plug at its maximum tolerance and identifies space heaters as a poor use case because of startup spikes; that guidance is general safety context, not a Gosund-specific test. Loads that may be reasonable, with model and appliance checks
- Lamps, seasonal lights, and chargers where remote shutoff is useful.
- Fans with a mechanical on/off switch, if their current and startup characteristics are within the exact plug’s rating.
- Coffee makers with a physical toggle switch, if the manufacturer allows this kind of remote power switching and unattended operation.
- Dehumidifiers, humidifiers, and air purifiers only when the manufacturer permits remote switching and the appliance resumes the intended operation when power returns.
Loads to avoid or treat as high risk
- Space heaters, heating blankets, toaster ovens, microwaves, hair dryers, and irons.
- Medical, life-support-related, or refrigeration equipment where an interruption or failed restart could cause harm or loss.
- Any appliance whose safe operation depends on a proprietary shutdown sequence, active supervision, or a control the smart outlet cannot reproduce.
A timer is an automation feature, not a safety certification. Do not use a smart plug to make an appliance safe to leave unattended.

Setup: pairing and troubleshooting
The reviewed unit’s exact app flow is not established. The steps below reflect a historical/comparable Gosund setup path; labels and availability can differ by model and app version. Use the app named in the manual supplied with the exact plug.
- Confirm the model and regional voltage from the plug label and manual. Do not proceed with a plug intended for another country’s electrical system.
- Install the Gosund, Smart Life, or Tuya app specified by that manual and sign in as required.
- Connect your phone to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Comparable Gosund manuals specify 2.4GHz; a 5GHz-only network will not work.
- Plug in the outlet and hold its physical power button until the indicator flashes, following the model’s manual.
- In the app, choose Add Device and select the smart-plug category. Try the offered quick or QR-code pairing method.
- If scanning fails, try manual discovery or AP mode if the app offers it. The 2019 reviewer succeeded with manual discovery after scanning failed.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password and wait for the plug to appear. Give it a short, distinctive name, such as “Bedroom Fan.”
- Test the physical button and app control separately. Create a timer or schedule, then test the appliance’s behavior after power is removed and restored.
- If desired, link the relevant Gosund, Smart Life, or Tuya account to Alexa or Google Home and test voice control separately.
If pairing fails
- Check that the phone is on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi during setup. Many dual-band routers work when the phone and plug use the 2.4GHz network; guest networks, captive portals, enterprise Wi-Fi, and unusual security settings can interfere.
- Move the plug closer to the router, disable a VPN or cellular fallback during onboarding, and reset the plug using its physical button.
- Try manual discovery rather than QR pairing, or AP mode if available in the app.
- Check whether the plug is already bound to another account. For old stock, confirm that the current app recognizes the model before buying multiple units.
- If network credentials appear to be the problem, check the router’s compatibility settings and consult the manual before changing the network name or password.
Remote control may depend on the app, account, vendor cloud, and internet connection. Support for Alexa or Google Home can vary by model and change over time. There is no verified basis here to promise that this older plug will remain usable if its app or cloud support ends.

Who should buy it—and who should skip it?
Buy only if all of these checks pass
- The listing identifies the exact model and the plug’s voltage matches your country.
- The physical unit and documentation show appropriate certification markings for your market; do not rely only on a reseller’s title.
- The seller offers a credible return policy, and you confirm the required app and ecosystem work with that model.
- The appliance is suitable for remote power switching and the plug rating is appropriate for its load.
- The price is meaningfully lower than a currently supported alternative.
Skip it if any of these apply
- The listing says only “16A” without voltage or a model number, or offers an EU/FR 230V plug for U.S. use.
- You need Matter, HomeKit, Thread, Zigbee, or local-only control; none is verified for the reviewed unit.
- You intend to control a space heater or another high-risk heating appliance.
- The unit’s certification, app compatibility, seller support, or power-restoration behavior cannot be verified.
- The price approaches that of a current product with clearer model-specific support.
For existing owners, the 2019 review’s core functions—remote switching, schedules, and timers—may still be useful if the plug remains paired and performs reliably. For a new U.S. purchase, the unresolved model and support questions make this an unsuitable foundation for an installation that needs predictable long-term operation.
