Google is selling the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, a Yale-made deadbolt designed for Google Home—not a lock manufactured or branded by Google. Google lists a $189.99 MSRP, but that is not necessarily the current checkout price. Before buying, check that you have a compatible Google Matter hub and Thread border router, and confirm the lock fits your door.
What is Google’s new smart lock?
The product is the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, developed by Yale in partnership with Google and designed for Google Home. Google calls it a “Google Home Preferred Product”; that describes its place in Google’s ecosystem, not who manufactures it. Google’s product announcement highlights Matter and Thread connectivity, Google Home app control, guest passcodes, alerts and integration with compatible Nest Doorbells.
The change matters for people who remember the Nest × Yale Lock. Google’s old Nest × Yale product URL now redirects to the Matter-enabled Yale lock. That points prospective buyers toward the newer model, but does not establish that the older lock has been discontinued in every market or that all remaining stock is unavailable.

Price and where to buy
Google’s promotional page lists a $189.99 MSRP and directs buyers to Yale’s official store. The Google Store also has a product listing and a “Find Retailers” control. Check the retailer’s current price, stock, finish availability, shipping and checkout total: the stated MSRP is not a guarantee of today’s selling price.

What it can do
Google advertises control and access features through Google Home, including:
- Locking and unlocking in the Google Home app, including remote unlocking.
- Creating permanent, temporary or scheduled entry codes for household members, guests or service workers.
- Receiving lock and unlock alerts and viewing activity history.
- Setting the lock to engage automatically after a chosen period.
- Using Vacation Mode to disable the keypad.
- Using the lock with a compatible Nest Doorbell.
A physical key is included as a backup. The box listing also includes the exterior keypad, interior lock, DoorSense door-ajar sensor, four AA alkaline batteries, strike plate, adjustable deadbolt, reset pin, mounting plate, screws and manual. These are product-page features and included items; check the current listing for any changes to the package.

Check the Google Home hub requirement first
The lock uses Matter and Thread. For Google Home setup and remote access, Google says it needs a compatible device that serves as both a Matter hub and Thread border router. Google names the following examples:
- Google TV Streamer (4K)
- Nest Hub Max
- Nest Hub (2nd generation)
- Nest Wifi Pro
A phone, Nest Doorbell or older Google speaker alone may not meet that requirement. Confirm the exact model you own against Google’s current compatibility information before ordering; “works with Google Home” does not mean every Google device can act as the required hub. Thread provides the lock’s low-power wireless connection, while Matter is the smart-home interoperability standard. Features exposed through other Matter platforms may differ from Google Home’s app-specific features.

Remote control, phone alerts and activity synchronization rely on the smart-home network and associated services. If those are unavailable, the keypad and physical key are local ways to enter; do not assume a network outage makes the door mechanically unusable. The available new-product information does not establish every offline behavior or promise that all future Google Home services will remain subscription-free. Google’s statement that the older Nest × Yale does not require a monthly fee applies to that older model, not automatically to every service associated with the newer lock.
Confirm that the lock suits your door
A smart lock is only a good fit if the door and deadbolt work properly. Google’s listing does not provide enough detail here to establish universal compatibility, so check Yale’s current installation guide for door thickness, backset and mechanism requirements before purchase. In particular, verify:

- Get alerts when someone locks or unlocks the door or tries to tamper with your smart door lock
- Your door uses a compatible deadbolt. Do not assume a mortise, multipoint, sliding-door or glass-door mechanism will work.
- The existing bolt moves freely and the door closes without pressure against the frame. Fix rubbing, sagging or strike-plate alignment problems before installing an electronic lock.
- There is adequate clearance for the interior assembly beside trim or other hardware.
- Your hub can maintain a reliable connection near the lock.
- The finish you want is in stock. Google lists Snow, Matte Black and Ash, but availability can vary.
Google lists the lock at 0.88 inches long, 2.56 inches wide and 5.38 inches high, with a weight of 3 pounds. The product page does not clarify in the captured specification whether those measurements describe the complete package or the lock assembly, so use Yale’s installation documentation for fit and clearance decisions rather than relying on the listing dimensions alone.

The newer model is a different connectivity and access design, not simply a software update to the Nest × Yale. Owners of the older lock should check Google’s current app and support guidance before deciding whether to keep it or replace it. Google’s redirect is evidence of current store positioning, not a worldwide discontinuation notice.

Who should consider it—and who should look elsewhere?
A good candidate
- You already use Google Home and own a compatible Matter hub with Thread border-router capability.
- You want guest or scheduled codes, alerts and activity history managed in Google Home.
- You value having a physical-key backup as well as keypad entry.
- Your door has a compatible deadbolt that is properly aligned and moves freely.
Consider another lock if
- You do not have the required hub and do not want to add one.
- You need fingerprint entry, Apple Home Key or a particular level of cross-platform feature support.
- Your door uses a mechanism that Yale’s current fit guide does not support.
- You prefer a retrofit lock that leaves the existing exterior hardware in place. August’s Wi-Fi Smart Lock is an example of a different approach: its official listing describes retrofitting a single-cylinder deadbolt and support for Google Assistant, Alexa and Apple HomeKit. Assistant support is not the same as the Yale lock’s Google Home Preferred Product integration; check current requirements and pricing on the August product page.
