Neither 5050 nor 2835 is automatically brighter. For white illumination, a high-density 2835 strip is often an efficient starting point; 5050 is commonly used for RGB and other multi-color lighting. To find the brighter option for your project, compare a complete strip’s lumens per meter, watts per meter, color mode, and installation requirements—not just the package number.
What do 5050 and 2835 mean?
The numbers refer approximately to the LED package dimensions: 2835 packages measure 2.8 × 3.5 mm, while 5050 packages measure 5.0 × 5.0 mm. They describe package size, not a guaranteed lumen output, wattage, efficiency, beam angle, or color quality. Super Bright LEDs’ package guidance gives these dimensions and describes common uses.
A package can contain different emitter arrangements. A 5050 is often used for red, green, and blue dies in an RGB strip, but white 5050 products also exist. Do not assume every package of a given size has the same internal design.
Which is brighter for white light?
For comparable white strips, 2835 is often a strong choice for efficient, high-density illumination, but it is not a universal winner. A particular 5050 strip can produce more light if it uses higher-output emitters, more LEDs, more power, better thermal management, or different optics.

Component data illustrates why package labels alone do not settle the comparison. Bridgelux’s 2835 product examples include separate models listed at typical efficacies from about 114 to 220 lm/W, under differing operating and test conditions. Lumileds’ 2835 Commercial series lists examples such as 113.2 lm/W for a 6V, 3000K, CRI 80 part and 119.4 lm/W for 6V, 4000K or 5000K, CRI 80 parts at their stated test current.
High-output white 5050 emitters can also be efficient. Lumileds’ 5050 data lists a 6V, 3500K, CRI 90 example at 495 lm and 128 lm/W at rated current; its 5050 HE Premium White example is listed at 615 lm and 159 lm/W at rated current. These are component figures for specified parts and conditions, not finished-strip output or a controlled comparison against a 2835 strip.
Compare complete strips, not just individual LEDs
For a strip, the most useful brightness specification is usually lumens per meter (lm/m), or lumens per foot. Divide that figure by watts per meter to estimate efficacy in lm/W. Check that the compared figures describe the same kind of light and comparable measurement conditions.

| Example strip | LED density | Reported output | Reported power | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White 2835, LEDSupply | 120 LEDs/m | 900–1,050 lm/m | 9.6 W/m | Vendor-listed white-strip figures; about 94–109 lm/W when output is divided by power. |
| RGB 5050, LEDSupply | 60 LEDs/m | 950 lm/m | 14.4 W/m | Vendor-listed RGB figures; not directly equivalent to white-strip lumens because output depends on selected color and measurement method. |
| 2835, GK Lighting | 120 LEDs/m | 1,836 lm/m | 17 W/m | Vendor-listed strip figures; about 108 lm/W by division. |
| 5050, GK Lighting | 120 LEDs/m | 2,304 lm/m | 28.8 W/m | Vendor-listed strip figures; about 80 lm/W by division, with greater total output and power in this example. |
The LEDSupply figures are from different white and RGB products, not a laboratory-controlled head-to-head test; the RGB lumen figure should not be read as equivalent to white output. GK Lighting’s figures likewise describe specific products, not a rule about all 2835 and 5050 strips. See the LEDSupply strip specifications and GK Lighting product data.
High-density and multi-row designs can change the result substantially. LEDSupply lists a dual-row 2835 strip at up to 1,500 lm/m, with 180 LEDs/m and 12 W/m on its outdoor strip page. Super Bright LEDs lists a triple-row 2835 strip at approximately 24,600 lumens per 5 m—about 4,920 lm/m—with 128 LEDs/ft on its product page. Those are vendor-reported product specifications, not independent test results.
Why a smaller 2835 strip can produce more light
A smaller package can be used at higher density, allowing more emitters along a meter. White 2835 strips are often designed around efficient white output rather than color-changing capability, and many lower-powered emitters can spread heat along the strip. These are design tendencies, not guarantees: density, drive current, board construction, and heat sinking vary by product.

A dense strip can also make a more continuous line of light than widely spaced emitters. If the strip will be visible directly or behind a diffuser, LED spacing and the channel’s optics may matter as much to the appearance as total lumens.

Why 5050 is common for RGB and RGBW
The larger 5050 package is commonly used where multiple color dies are needed in one LED, making it practical for RGB strips. The available light varies with the selected channel and color mix. Mixing red, green, and blue to approximate white is not the same as using a dedicated white emitter and can be less efficient or render colors less faithfully.
If you need both color effects and useful everyday white illumination, consider an RGBW strip with a separate white channel. Addressable strips can add per-pixel control, but integrated circuitry and color-focused design mean their white output should be checked on the product specification rather than assumed.

What brightness measurements tell you
- Lumens measure total visible light output. For strips, look for output per meter or foot.
- Lux measures light arriving on a surface. It changes with distance, beam angle, mounting geometry, and surface position.
- Candela describes intensity in a particular direction; luminance describes the apparent brightness of a source or surface.
- Watts measure electrical power, not brightness. Lumens per watt (lm/W) describe luminous efficacy.
A strip with a higher lm/m rating may not look brighter at the target if it is farther away, hidden behind a deep diffuser, or covered with an opaque silicone jacket. Color temperature also affects perception: a cool white strip may seem brighter than a warm white one at the same measured output. Higher CRI improves color rendering but may come with lower efficacy or output in some product designs.
How to compare two product listings
- Match the light type. Compare white with white, and RGB with RGB. For RGB, establish whether the rating applies to one color, a mixed color, all channels, or a dedicated white channel.
- Compare lm/m or lm/ft. Prefer strip-level figures over bare LED component figures. Check whether the listing describes a measured strip, a calculated estimate, a short test length, or a full reel.
- Calculate efficacy. Divide lumens per meter by watts per meter. For example, a stated 1,000 lm/m at 10 W/m works out to 100 lm/W; this is only meaningful if both figures refer to the same operating condition.
- Check density and construction. Note LEDs per meter, number of rows, PCB width, and any stated copper or thermal details. These influence output, appearance, and heat handling.
- Confirm the color specification. Check color temperature (CCT) and CRI for white strips. For color-changing strips, check channel type and controller compatibility.
- Check electrical and installation limits. Confirm voltage, maximum continuous run, cut interval, power-supply requirements, operating temperature, and required power-injection method.
- Verify environmental suitability. Check IP rating and whether connectors, cut ends, controller, and power supply are protected for the actual location.
Published lumen figures are not always directly comparable. A listing may report theoretical LED output, measured strip output, output at a particular color temperature, RGB output under a particular channel setting, or output before the losses from a coating or diffuser. If the test condition is not specified, treat the number as a vendor claim for that product rather than a universal comparison.
Choose by project, then verify the output
| Project priority | Good starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen task or under-cabinet lighting | High-density white strip, often 2835 | lm/m, CCT, CRI, diffuser, and whether the installed light reaches the work surface adequately. |
| Cove or indirect lighting | High-density white strip or a higher-output multi-row strip | Output after the cove and diffuser losses, plus run length and heat handling. |
| TV, gaming, or entertainment color effects | RGB 5050 or a compatible addressable strip | Controller compatibility, color-channel output, and whether the strip provides dedicated white. |
| Color effects plus everyday white | RGBW strip | Dedicated white-channel output and controller type. |
| Automotive, boat, or RV installation | Strip compatible with the existing system voltage | Voltage, environmental rating, secure mounting, and the vehicle or vessel’s actual power conditions. |
| Signage or commercial lighting | Strip selected to meet the required output and operating conditions | Verified lm/m, viewing distance, mounting surface, thermal design, and specified service conditions. |
| Wet or outdoor location | Strip with a suitable IP rating and protected connections | Rating of the complete installation, sealed cuts and connectors, and heat management under its coating. |
| Long continuous run | A properly specified 24V option is often a useful starting point | Manufacturer’s maximum run and power-injection guidance; voltage alone does not guarantee more brightness. |
LEDSupply notes that 24V strips generally help maintain consistency on longer runs and may need fewer power-injection points than 12V strips; 12V can suit an existing 12V vehicle, boat, or RV system. See its 24V strip guidance. Actual run limits remain product-specific.

Plan for heat, voltage drop, and power
Electrical power that is not converted into light becomes heat. A higher-wattage strip may produce more total light, but it also puts more demand on the power supply and installation. Heat can reduce LED efficiency and shorten useful life. For a high-output strip intended for sustained operation, use the manufacturer-approved mounting surface; an aluminum channel can spread heat and provide a finished appearance. Do not assume painted drywall alone is an adequate heat-spreading surface.
Long runs can dim toward the far end because of voltage drop. Follow the product’s maximum continuous run and power-injection instructions rather than powering an entire reel from one end by default. Size the power supply for the strip’s calculated demand and follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for operating margin. RGB and RGBW installations also require a controller rated for the strip and its channel load.
Water resistance is a property of the complete installation, not the LED package. Coatings may affect heat dissipation and flexibility; cut ends, connectors, power supplies, and controllers must also suit the environment. For wet or submerged use, use the specified sealing accessories and installation method.

- Choosing the larger package for brightness: package dimensions do not specify lumens or electrical input.
- Choosing the higher wattage as the brighter strip: watts indicate consumption; compare strip-level lumens and efficacy.
- Comparing RGB lumens directly with white lumens: color setting and measurement method can make the figures unlike-for-like.
- Ignoring density: a sparse 5050 strip may look less uniform than a dense 2835 strip.
- Treating an LED datasheet as a strip rating: finished output depends on drive conditions, density, board, thermal path, and optical losses.
- Assuming waterproof means suitable anywhere: check the complete system’s rating, sealed connections, and thermal limits.
The practical verdict
Start with 2835 when you want efficient white illumination; start with 5050 when RGB color effects are central. For maximum brightness, choose the specific strip with the highest credible lm/m figure that also meets your color, power, run-length, and thermal requirements. For smooth light, prioritize density and diffuser or COB construction. The package number is a useful clue about form and common use—not a brightness rating.
