Say, “Alexa, turn on Whisper Mode,” then whisper your request. Alexa can answer a whispered request in a whisper, but Whisper Mode is not a guarantee that alarms, music, timers, skills, or every other Echo sound will be quiet. Test the specific Echo you use at night before relying on it.
What Alexa Whisper Mode does
Whisper Mode lets you whisper to Alexa and receive a whispered spoken response. It is designed for quiet exchanges, such as asking the time or controlling a light without speaking at normal volume. Amazon describes the feature as a way to use Alexa without waking someone nearby (Amazon’s Whisper Mode and Alexa feature guide).
It is not a permanent low-volume setting or a universal silent mode: the key is to whisper the request you want Alexa to answer quietly. It also does not guarantee that every kind of audio Alexa or an Echo can produce will whisper.
How to turn on Whisper Mode
Use the voice command
- Stand near the Echo you intend to use and make sure its microphone is not muted.
- Say, “Alexa, turn on Whisper Mode.” Amazon documents this as the activation command.
- Wait for Alexa’s confirmation, then whisper a simple test such as, “What time is it?”
- Check whether the answer is audible enough for you but quiet enough for the room.
If Alexa does not recognize the activation command, try saying it clearly at normal volume, then whisper the test request. Check that the microphone is unmuted and try again after reopening the Alexa app or restarting the Echo. “Alexa, enable Whisper Mode” may work, but Amazon’s documented wording is the safer command to try first.

Look for the app setting
A commonly reported route is Alexa app → More → Settings → Voice Responses → Whisper Mode. Some app versions may show More → Voice Responses instead. Menu labels can vary by app version, platform, locale, device, and Alexa experience; look under Voice Responses if the route differs. This path has been referenced in Amazon customer-forum guidance, not established as a universal current menu path.
If the setting is available for a selected device, make sure you are changing the Echo you use at night. A missing toggle does not prove the feature is unavailable: try the voice command and check for app or device updates. If it is enabled but behaving inconsistently, Amazon forum guidance suggests turning it off and back on.

Test it before bedtime
Try the requests you actually plan to use, while standing where you will be at night. Whisper recognition and perceived loudness can differ with the device, room, background noise, and the distance between you and the Echo.
- Time: Whisper, “What time is it?”
- Smart-home control: Whisper, “Turn off the bedroom light.” If the device cannot complete the action, note how its failure response sounds.
- Timer: Try setting and cancelling a short timer, but do not assume its alert will whisper.
- Alarm: Check the exact alarm behavior before relying on it overnight.
- Media or a skill: Test any service you use; its audio may not be governed by Whisper Mode.
Amazon does not publish a universal decibel level for Whisper Mode, so there is no reliable volume figure or guarantee that a particular sleeping person will not hear it.

Whisper Mode, Brief Mode, and other quiet options

Amazon says Brief Mode can shorten responses and sometimes replace verbal confirmation with a sound (Amazon’s Alexa feature guide). That sound is not necessarily silent. Use Whisper Mode when you still want a spoken answer; choose volume controls for general loudness and Do Not Disturb for interruptions.
Why Alexa may not whisper
- The request was not clearly whispered: Fans, air purifiers, distance, bedding, and room acoustics can make a whisper harder to detect. Amazon’s interaction guidance recommends natural speech at a normal pace and volume for reliable interaction, rather than promising dependable recognition of every whisper (Alexa communication guidance).
- Whisper Mode is not enabled: Activate it explicitly with the documented command, then whisper the actual request.
- The microphone is muted: An Echo with its microphone muted cannot hear you. Amazon’s Echo light-ring guide explains device indicators, including the muted-microphone indicator.
- Another Echo answered: In a home with multiple devices, test one at a time and identify which Echo responds.
- The reply is too quiet to hear: Some Amazon forum users report that Whisper Mode can be barely audible on their setups. That is anecdotal support evidence, not a published loudness specification; restarting the Echo and toggling the feature are suggested troubleshooting steps (Amazon customer-forum discussion).
- A later answer is at normal volume: Whisper each request for which you want a whispered response; do not assume one whispered exchange permanently changes every later response.
- A skill or media service is speaking: Stop the skill or playback and lower the Echo’s volume. Whisper Mode should not be treated as a filter for third-party audio.
What Whisper Mode may not control
Alexa’s spoken answer to a whispered question is different from an alarm or timer alert intended to attract attention. Do not rely on Whisper Mode to quiet every alarm, timer, notification, confirmation sound, or other alert; test the exact behavior you need before using it overnight.

Music, podcasts, audiobooks, radio, calls, announcements, and skill-generated audio may follow their own playback behavior rather than whisper. Alexa supports these as distinct kinds of functionality (Amazon’s Echo and Alexa guidelines), so do not assume Whisper Mode changes them. For quiet media, lower the playback volume or use a sleep timer. Headphones or a Bluetooth speaker may be options where compatible, but compatibility and independent volume control vary.
Can you schedule Whisper Mode?
Do not count on a routine to schedule Whisper Mode itself. Amazon’s public description frames it around whispering to Alexa, rather than as an always-whisper output state that starts at a set time. For a scheduled quiet period, a routine may instead lower the Echo’s volume, turn on Do Not Disturb where supported, stop audio, or adjust connected lights and thermostat settings.

Amazon documents Alexa+ Night Mode separately, including nighttime automation and Do Not Disturb controls on supported experiences (Amazon Alexa+ Night Mode help). That is a separate option, not proof that Whisper Mode can be scheduled. Availability and controls may vary.
Does it work on every Echo?
Whisper Mode is available on many Alexa-enabled Echo devices, but Amazon’s public consumer guidance does not provide a current, exhaustive compatibility list for every model, generation, region, language, and Alexa experience. The Echo family includes different device types, and capabilities vary (Amazon’s Echo setup guide). Test the specific device you use at night rather than assuming every Echo or third-party Alexa device behaves identically.
