To change SketchUp to a useful interior view, place the camera inside the room, aim it with Look Around, adjust the Field of View, and save the result as a Scene. These are separate controls: moving the camera does not hide walls, and a section plane is not a realistic eye-level view.
The fastest interior-view workflow
- Choose Camera > Position Camera (or the Position Camera tool).
- Click a point on the room floor. SketchUp places the viewpoint about 5 ft 6 in above that point by default. This is SketchUp’s documented default, not a required human or architectural eye height. Type another height in the Measurements box and press Enter if needed.
- Use Look Around to turn from that fixed location.
- Select Zoom (shortcut
Z), choose Camera > Field of View, and widen the view gradually until the room fits. - Open the Scenes panel and click Add Scene to preserve the camera, framing, and display settings.
Menu names and toolbar locations can differ among SketchUp desktop, web, macOS, Windows, and Viewer editions. Use the tool names and Camera menu when an icon is not where you expect it. The native camera controls are documented in SketchUp’s viewing guide and its walkthrough guide.
Step 1: Place the camera inside the room
Activate Position Camera and click a clearly visible point on the floor. SketchUp places the camera at its default eye height above that point. For a seated viewpoint, a child’s-eye view, or a measured project requirement, enter the desired height in the Measurements box immediately after placing the camera.
If you already know the target direction, click and hold at the intended camera location, drag toward the object or wall you want to face, enter the eye height, and release. This positions and aims the camera in one operation. Otherwise, click first and refine the direction with Look Around.

Position Camera changes where you are. It does not remove a wall or reveal geometry behind it.
Step 2: Aim the camera with Look Around
Look Around rotates the view from the current camera position, like turning your head. Drag left or right to change direction and up or down to change the vertical aim. It is usually more natural for an eye-level interior than Orbit, which rotates around model geometry and can quickly move you outside the room.
- Position Camera: changes location and can set eye height.
- Look Around: changes direction while keeping location fixed.
- Walk: moves the camera through the model.
- Orbit: rotates around geometry, useful for exterior inspection but less predictable for a fixed interior composition.
Step 3: Fit the room with Field of View
Do not keep zooming when the room feels cramped. Zoom changes framing; Field of View changes how much of the scene the camera can see. With Zoom active (or by pressing Z), choose Camera > Field of View and enter a value in degrees or a focal-length-style millimetre value. You can also hold Shift while dragging with the Zoom tool to adjust the field of view manually.

SketchUp’s current troubleshooting documentation describes a field-of-view range of 1° to 120°; defaults vary by version and are approximately 30°–35°. A wider value is useful in a small bathroom or hallway, but it also exaggerates perspective: nearby door frames and furniture can stretch, edge walls can appear sharply angled, and the room may look deeper or larger than it is. Increase the value only until the required walls, ceiling, and furniture fit, then reduce it if the image starts to look distorted. See the official viewing documentation.

Step 4: Walk through the model
After establishing a believable eye height, activate Walk. Click and drag in the direction you want to travel; the distance of the pointer from the starting crosshair controls speed. Collision detection is normally enabled, so valid enclosing walls stop the camera.
Current official walkthrough documentation lists these modifiers, but shortcuts can vary by version and platform:
| Purpose | Windows | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Move vertically instead of forward/backward | Shift | Shift |
| Run instead of walk | Ctrl | Option |
| Intentionally pass through walls (disable collision) | Alt | Alt |
If Walk passes through a wall unexpectedly, check whether collision was disabled and whether the wall is a continuous, valid surface. For deliberate penetration, use the documented modifier rather than changing the model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 5: Save the interior view as a Scene
Once the camera, direction, field of view, visibility, style, and any cut are correct, open the Scenes panel and click Add Scene. Use descriptive names such as Living Room Eye Level, Kitchen Wide View, or Bedroom Looking North.

A scene can store the camera position, zoom distance, and field of view as well as visible tags, hidden geometry or objects, active section planes, style, fog, shadows, environment, and axes settings. This makes a scene useful for screenshots, presentations, printing, and LayOut documentation. The full property list is in SketchUp’s scene guide.
Editing the camera does not automatically rewrite an existing scene. Select the scene, make the changes, and click Update Scene; verify that the camera and other intended properties are included. Save the SketchUp file afterward. If you lose an experimental angle, Camera > Previous and Camera > Next can help recover camera history.
When walls or roofs block the interior
An opaque wall will always block a normal camera. Choose the method that matches the communication goal:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Goal | Best method | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Clean interior presentation | Hide a wall, roof, or ceiling, or toggle exterior tags off | The shell is temporarily absent from the display |
| Explain how spaces relate | Place and activate a section plane | Creates a technical cut effect |
| Measured plan or section | Section plane plus Parallel Projection | Not a human-eye perspective |
To create a cutaway, activate Section Plane, place it through the obstructing wall or roof, and activate the cut. Right-click the plane and choose Align View when you want the camera aligned to it; hide the plane itself if its outline is distracting. Section planes change the displayed cut, not the underlying geometry, and active-plane behavior depends on the modeling context (groups and components can have separate contexts). See SketchUp’s section-plane instructions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right projection
| Projection | Use it for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Perspective | Realistic room views and walkthroughs | Parallel lines converge; objects are not shown to scale |
| Two-Point Perspective | Architectural presentation images | Retains depth while keeping verticals aligned |
| Parallel Projection | Plans, elevations, sections, and measured diagrams | Orthographic view; lines remain parallel and lengths are represented at scale |
Changing projection is not the same as zooming. It changes the representation of depth and scale. For a natural person-in-room view, start with Perspective; use Two-Point Perspective when vertical walls should read more cleanly.
Fix common interior-view problems
The camera ends up outside the room
Your click may have landed on the wrong surface, a nested group, or a floor that is not where you expected. Undo if appropriate, reactivate Position Camera, click a clearly visible floor point, enter the height, and aim with Look Around rather than Orbit.

Walls look stretched
Lower the FOV, move farther from nearby furniture or walls, and consider Two-Point Perspective for a presentation image.
Faces disappear or the model looks sliced
This may be camera clipping rather than damaged geometry. Restore a moderate FOV and inspect whether some geometry is extremely far from the model origin. SketchUp lists wide FOV and far-away geometry among conditions associated with clipping; consult the clipping troubleshooting page.
A wall still blocks the view
Hide the wall, switch off its tag, or use a section plane. A camera cannot see through solid geometry by itself.
Recommended Free Tools
The scene does not retain the new angle
Select the scene and use Update Scene. Check that Camera Location is among the saved properties, then save the file.
You are working in LayOut
A LayOut viewport has its own camera controls—Pan, Orbit, Zoom, Look Around, and Walk. Editing the SketchUp model’s camera and editing a LayOut viewport are related but not identical tasks. Use LayOut’s viewport-camera documentation for viewport edits; use the SketchUp scene to provide a repeatable source view.
Interior-camera checklist
- Camera is on the intended floor and at a plausible eye height.
- Look Around, rather than Orbit, was used for final aiming.
- FOV is wide enough to frame the room but not so wide that walls stretch.
- Camera is not embedded in a wall or furniture.
- Perspective, Two-Point Perspective, or Parallel Projection matches the purpose.
- Obstructing geometry is intentionally hidden, tagged, or sectioned.
- Scene properties include the camera and visibility settings you need.
- Existing scenes were updated and the model file was saved.
Conclusion
The dependable sequence is Position Camera → Look Around → adjust Field of View → save or update a Scene. Add Walk for navigation, hide geometry or use a section plane when walls obstruct the explanation, and switch projection only when the presentation or documentation goal requires it.
