IKEA KAJPLATS Matter Smart Bulbs Are Listed in the U.S.: Models, Prices and Setup

Yes—several IKEA KAJPLATS smart bulbs are listed on IKEA’s U.S. website. The confirmed lineup includes E26 white-spectrum bulbs, a GU10 color-and-white-spectrum spotlight, and a white-spectrum starter kit. Individual bulbs are listed from $7.99 to $13.99. They use Matter over Thread, so app-based control requires compatible Matter and Thread equipment; a phone alone is not enough. U.S. listings do not guarantee that every model is in stock at every store.

Matter over Thread: what you need to know

Matter and Thread do different jobs. Matter is the interoperability standard that lets compatible devices join supported smart-home platforms. Thread is the low-power mesh network these KAJPLATS bulbs use to communicate. A Thread Border Router connects that network to the rest of the home, while a Matter controller manages setup and control.

In practical terms, the connection looks like this:

KAJPLATS bulb → Thread network → Thread Border Router and Matter controller → IKEA Home smart or another compatible platform

That is why “Matter-compatible” does not mean “connects directly to Wi-Fi.” Before buying for app control, check whether your existing smart-home equipment supports both Matter and Thread Border Router functions. IKEA lists Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung among compatible ecosystems, but setup and available features can differ by platform. A platform may not expose every dimming, white-temperature, color, scene or adaptive-lighting option in the same way. Do you need IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub?

• For IKEA Home smart: IKEA’s setup guidance calls for the DIRIGERA hub and IKEA Home smart app to add the bulb to that system.
• For another Matter ecosystem: DIRIGERA may not be necessary if your existing system supplies a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router. Confirm your specific device supports both.
• For remote-only control: IKEA says a compatible IKEA remote can pair directly with a smart bulb without first adding it to a Matter hub. This is not the same as full app-based smart-home control.

The bulb can be used without adding it to IKEA Home smart, but that does not give it the full app, automation and ecosystem capabilities of a properly commissioned Matter setup. IKEA’s Matter connection guide and smart-lighting support page explain the distinctions. A Zigbee-only setup should not be assumed to support KAJPLATS as a drop-in replacement for a TRÅDFRI bulb.

How to set up a KAJPLATS bulb

Using IKEA Home smart and DIRIGERA

1. Fit the bulb in a compatible socket and switch on the power.
2. Make sure the IKEA Home smart app and DIRIGERA hub are up to date.
3. Open the app and choose its option to add a new Matter product, then follow the prompts.
4. Scan the Matter setup code on the package or in the product documentation.
5. Keep the phone, hub and bulb close during commissioning. Once added, assign the bulb to a room and check the controls available in the app.

IKEA says a newly powered product is ready to connect for about 15 minutes. If that window expires, power-cycling the bulb can restart pairing. Keep the bulb powered throughout setup; a wall switch that cuts power also takes a smart bulb offline.

Using another Matter platform

First verify that the system has a Matter controller and a Thread Border Router, then start its add-device flow and scan the setup code. The product manual says the code is intended for adding the bulb to the first system. To use it with additional ecosystems, use Matter multi-admin or the platform’s documented sharing process rather than repeatedly treating the bulb as a new device. See the KAJPLATS manual.

Using an IKEA remote

For physical control without a Matter hub, pair the bulb with a compatible IKEA remote, following the instructions for that remote and bulb. IKEA says its BILRESA remote can control up to 10 smart products. A remote is not a substitute for a Thread Border Router when you want app-based Matter control.

If pairing fails

Start with the simple checks: confirm the bulb has power, move the phone and hub closer, verify app and hub updates, and restart the pairing window by switching the bulb off and on. Remove stale duplicate entries if the platform shows an old or incomplete device record.

If ordinary recovery does not work, IKEA’s support guidance describes a factory reset by switching the light off and on six times in the specified rhythm. Follow the sequence in the app or product instructions; resetting clears prior connection information and opens a fresh pairing opportunity. Avoid repeatedly removing and re-adding a bulb without resetting if it may still be commissioned to another Matter system.

Thread setup can also be affected by missing border-router support, weak mesh coverage, multiple Thread networks or controllers, local-network or IPv6 routing issues, or repeated power loss at the wall switch. IKEA’s DIRIGERA release notes document Matter and Thread stability improvements, including changes related to IPv6 routing and multiple border routers or controllers. If problems persist, consult IKEA’s connection guide for its Thread-network recovery steps rather than assuming the bulb itself is defective.

Which KAJPLATS bulb fits the job?

• Accent or bedside lamp: The 450-lumen E26 at $7.99 is the least expensive confirmed individual bulb in these listings. Check its clear-globe appearance against the fixture and shade.
• General room lighting: Consider the 800-lumen bulb for a smaller fixture or the 1,100- and 1,600-lumen bulbs for more output. Lumens indicate light output, not whether a bulb will physically fit. Check the fixture’s maximum wattage, available clearance and globe shape.
• Color lighting: The confirmed U.S. color-and-white-spectrum listing is the 517-lumen GU10. Do not assume an E26 KAJPLATS bulb changes color unless its specific listing says so.
• GU10 spotlight replacement: Choose the GU10 only for a fixture designed for that fitting; it is not an alternative to an E26 bulb. IKEA lists white settings at 2,200 K, 2,700 K, 4,000 K and 6,500 K for this model, alongside color control.
• Physical control on a budget: The $9.99 white-spectrum starter kit includes a bulb and remote. It can suit a simple remote-controlled setup, but does not remove the need for Matter and Thread infrastructure if you want full app integration.
• Existing IKEA smart-home owner: Check whether your current hub and network meet KAJPLATS’s Matter-over-Thread requirements. Do not assume a Zigbee-only TRÅDFRI arrangement will automatically commission it.

What to weigh before buying

The main attraction is the combination of comparatively low listed prices, adjustable white on the white-spectrum models, selected color capability, and Matter interoperability. Thread provides a low-power mesh approach, and IKEA remotes offer a physical-control option. The trade-off is setup complexity compared with a basic Wi-Fi bulb: buyers need suitable Matter and Thread infrastructure for app control, and ecosystem feature support is not necessarily identical.

Customer reviews on IKEA’s product pages include anecdotal reports of pairing problems; some GU10 reviewers also describe a beam wider than they expected. Those comments are individual experiences, not controlled reliability or beam testing. Check the product’s fit and light distribution against your use, and make sure the bulb will remain powered at its switch.

For buyers who prefer a Wi-Fi bulb and want to avoid Thread equipment, compare products specifically designed for that setup. For buyers who already have a compatible Matter/Thread hub—or plan to build around IKEA Home smart—KAJPLATS can be a low-cost option. IKEA announced its move toward a broader Matter-compatible smart-home range in 2025, with products beginning to launch in 2026; that context does not mean every older IKEA product is directly interchangeable with KAJPLATS.
