Yes, humanoid robots are beginning to enter the home market—but only in a limited early-access sense. As of August 16, 2026, 1X is accepting orders for NEO and advertises U.S. deliveries beginning in 2026. That makes it a real consumer-facing offer, not proof that robots are already widely installed in homes or ready to handle everyday chores without supervision.
What “making it into homes” means
Home robotics has reached a meaningful milestone: a buyer can place an order for a humanoid robot designed for household use. But the phrase “in homes” can describe very different stages, from a company-controlled trial to a product delivered to customers. Those stages should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Demonstration: A company shows a robot doing a task in a selected setting. This establishes that the task can be performed under some conditions, not that it works reliably in an ordinary home.
- Residential testing: A company tests robots or supports development in homes. That is evidence of home-focused development, not general consumer availability.
- Preorder or early access: Buyers can express interest or place an order for a product with a future delivery target. The product may still be changing, and the order is not evidence of widespread shipment.
- General availability: Consumers can routinely buy and receive the product under established terms.
- Proven household appliance: Independent evidence shows that the robot reliably performs its advertised tasks across homes, with clear safety, privacy, service, and support arrangements.
NEO is at the order and early-access stage, with U.S. deliveries advertised to begin in 2026. Figure is scaling production and developing home tasks, but its public materials do not establish a consumer preorder or retail program. Neither status demonstrates a mature mass-market appliance. 1X’s NEO announcement, 1X’s manufacturing update, and Figure’s production update describe those different stages.

Homes are already arranged around people: doors, stairs, drawers, shelves, counters, appliances, and tools are intended for human-sized bodies and hands. A robot with a human-like form could, in principle, use that existing environment instead of requiring a home to be rebuilt around a specialized machine. The challenge is that household work is varied: objects move, rooms are cluttered, and instructions are rarely as predictable as a factory workflow.

Companies are pursuing AI systems intended to help robots interpret instructions and adapt their actions. Figure describes Helix as a generalist vision-language-action system that connects perception, movement, and reasoning in real time. That is an engineering approach, not proof that a humanoid is the cheapest or most effective solution for every domestic task. Figure’s Helix description
For construction and renovation, the implication is worth watching rather than designing around prematurely. A human-shaped robot may benefit from familiar home layouts, but the available evidence does not establish standard doorway widths, floor plans, or other building specifications that would make a home robot-ready. Nor does a robot’s ability to walk through a house establish that it can safely handle the objects and people inside it.
What can a buyer actually order?
1X NEO: the clearest consumer offer
1X markets NEO specifically for household use and is accepting orders. Its offer lists a $20,000 Early Access purchase price or a monthly option of about $499, and advertises U.S. deliveries beginning in 2026. These are early-access terms and a stated delivery target—not evidence that the product is generally in stock or that deliveries have reached a broad customer base. Review the NEO product announcement and order page for the current offer and terms.

According to 1X, NEO can navigate a home, open doors, retrieve objects, perform chores, and learn tasks through its Redwood AI system. Users can give instructions through an app; the product materials also describe remote piloting or expert assistance when the robot cannot complete a task independently. 1X presents its soft, cushioned exterior and protective construction as ways to reduce injury risk during contact. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent evidence of task reliability or safety certification. 1X NEO capabilities and design

That workflow matters: “can do household tasks” does not mean “can autonomously do any chore.” Teaching a task, repeating it in suitable conditions, and handling a new situation without help are different capabilities.
Figure 03: home-oriented, but not a public consumer purchase
Figure describes Figure 03 as designed for home use and lists laundry, cleaning, and dishwashing among its household tasks. Its published specifications include a height of 5 feet 8 inches, a mass of 61 kilograms, a 20-kilogram payload, a claimed five-hour runtime, a top speed of 1.2 meters per second, and 2 kW inductive charging. These are company specifications; runtime depends on workload, and the figures do not establish household performance. Figure 03 product page
Figure says the design includes a softer exterior, foam around pinch points, washable and replaceable textile coverings, and updated audio hardware. In its October 2025 announcement, Figure said its BotQ facility was designed for capacity of up to 12,000 humanoid robots a year and described a longer-term goal of 100,000 robots over four years. Those are company production plans, not consumer distribution figures. Figure 03 announcement
In April 2026, Figure reported delivering more than 350 Figure 03 robots and increasing its production rate from one per day to one per hour. The company also described allocating robots to home-task development and residential support infrastructure. That indicates manufacturing and development progress, but the sources do not establish a public consumer price, preorder, or general home-delivery program. Figure production update

Tesla Optimus: an ambition, not a home product to order
Tesla describes Optimus as a general-purpose autonomous humanoid and says it is preparing and investing for large-scale production. Tesla has also described work and home use as an objective. The cited company materials do not establish a public consumer preorder, retail price, or confirmed home-delivery program. As of the August 16, 2026 evidence cutoff, Tesla had not established the same publicly orderable home product that 1X had. Tesla’s Q1 2026 filing · Tesla Impact Report
How much autonomy is there?
Autonomy is not a single yes-or-no feature. A robot may execute a trained movement independently in a familiar setting but need a person to identify an object, resolve a failed grasp, or take control in an unfamiliar situation. Remote assistance can make an early product more useful, but it changes what the buyer is relying on: a robot plus human support, rather than a robot that completes every task alone.
Independent coverage has questioned how much remote human assistance may be involved in early NEO demonstrations. The available sources do not establish a verified percentage of household tasks NEO completes without intervention. Buyers should ask 1X, and other vendors, for task-level answers rather than relying on an unqualified “autonomous” label. TechRadar’s discussion of humanoid robots · Tom’s Guide on NEO
- Which tasks can the robot complete today without a person guiding its movements?
- When remote assistance is used, is it disclosed, and can the owner decline it?
- Can a remote operator see camera or microphone feeds from the home? Who can access recordings, how long are they retained, and can the owner delete them?
- Does assistance require an internet connection, and what happens if the connection drops or help is unavailable?
- Can the owner disable remote access without losing core functions?
- Are intervention rates or continuous task records available across ordinary homes, rather than selected demonstrations?
A video of laundry folding or dishwashing shows a task performed under the conditions in that video. It does not show how many attempts were needed, whether a person intervened, how objects were arranged beforehand, or how often the robot fails in different homes. Useful evidence would include unedited task records, intervention rates, recovery from errors, and results across varied layouts and objects.

What household tasks are plausible—and which deserve caution?
| Task category | What the current evidence supports | Practical caution |
|---|---|---|
| Fetching objects | 1X advertises object retrieval as a NEO capability. | Ask which objects and settings are supported and when help is required. |
| Opening doors and navigating | 1X advertises these as NEO functions. | Performance in a real home with varied layouts and obstacles is not established by the claim alone. |
| Laundry | Figure has shown laundry as a home-task capability. | A demonstration does not establish reliable handling of arbitrary clothing piles or recovery from failed grasps. |
| Dishwashing | Figure lists dishwashing among its household tasks. | Look for evidence on breakage, task time, and human intervention before relying on it. |
| Cooking, hot liquids, knives, and glass | The cited sources do not establish general safe performance. | Treat these as high-risk until independent evidence supports specific uses. |
| Children, older adults, and pets | The cited product materials do not establish suitability for unsupervised care or handling. | Do not infer safety around vulnerable people or animals from soft coverings or a household demonstration. |
| Cleaning chemicals | The cited sources do not establish safe, general handling. | Require explicit product guidance and evidence before assigning this work. |
Homes are difficult operating environments: lighting, flooring, clutter, furniture, pets, children, fragile objects, stairs, and human movement all vary. Figure itself characterizes the home as more complex than a structured setting. Its reported BMW deployment—more than 1,250 operating hours, 90,000 parts loaded, and contribution to producing more than 30,000 vehicles—shows progress in a real-world industrial workflow, but a factory task remains narrower than open-ended domestic work. Figure company overview · Figure’s BMW deployment report
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a humanoid may not be the best robot for a chore
A human-shaped body has a plausible advantage when a machine must move through human-built rooms and manipulate objects designed for people. But for a single predictable job, a purpose-built product is often the more direct comparison: a robot vacuum or mop, robotic lawn equipment, a dishwasher, washer-dryer, smart-home automation, or a specialized stationary arm. Human cleaners, caregivers, handymen, and delivery services are also alternatives, depending on the task.
The right comparison is not simply a $20,000 robot versus one appliance. It includes the chores actually completed, purchase or monthly cost, support labor, installation, repairs, downtime, electricity, privacy exposure, and useful life. A nominally general robot that frequently needs help may be less practical than a limited machine that reliably does one job.

What should a prospective buyer check?
Before ordering an early-access home robot, ask for concrete answers in writing. A product page’s task list is not a substitute for terms covering service, data, safety, or returns.

Who should consider one now?
NEO is most plausible for a wealthy early adopter, robotics enthusiast, developer, or institution prepared to tolerate product changes, failures, and support dependencies. Accessibility-focused households may have reasons to explore assistive robotics, but should verify the exact tasks, safeguards, service response, and privacy terms against their needs before relying on an early-access machine.
It is a poor fit for anyone expecting a hands-off nanny or caregiver, guaranteed completion of open-ended chores, immediate delivery, or a product with proven operation independent of remote assistance. Households requiring offline operation or strict local processing should confirm those capabilities explicitly rather than infer them.

The market has crossed one threshold: a company is taking orders for a household-oriented humanoid and advertising future U.S. deliveries. It has not crossed the more consequential threshold of demonstrating that ordinary buyers can obtain an affordable, dependable robot that performs a broad range of home tasks safely and with little supervision. For now, treat NEO as an expensive early-access product, Figure 03 as a home-focused platform in development and production scale-up, and Tesla Optimus as a potential entrant—not interchangeable consumer options.
