Google Nest is Google’s connected-home ecosystem, not a single device. It covers smart-home products such as cameras, doorbells, thermostats, speakers, displays, Wi-Fi equipment and streaming devices, plus the apps and services used to manage them. In 2026, Google Home is increasingly the main app and a growing hardware brand, while some older Nest products still depend on the separate Nest app.
Nest can suit a home that already relies on Google services and wants cameras, climate controls and other devices in one system. The main decisions are whether each product fits the home, which app it needs, and whether the features you want depend on a paid plan or an internet connection.
What does “Nest” mean?
Nest began as a standalone smart-home company and became part of Google. Today, “Google Nest” refers to Google’s connected-home products and services. It is not one operating system or one subscription: the ecosystem combines Google hardware, the Google Home and Nest apps, account-based services, and compatible products from other manufacturers.

- Nest: The established name on many cameras, thermostats and older speakers, among other products.
- Google Home: The app used to set up and control many current devices, and an increasingly prominent product brand.
- Nest app: Still needed for some older products; moving to Google Home is not universal.
- Google Home Premium: Google’s current subscription presentation for eligible camera history and other features. Many existing owners know the service as Nest Aware.
- “Works with Google Home” and Matter: Ways third-party devices can connect to Google Home. They are not Google Nest products, and their available features can differ.
What products are in the Google Nest ecosystem?
The portfolio includes products sold under Nest and Google Home names, as well as older and discontinued models. A product can remain usable or supported after it disappears from the store, so check the exact model in Google’s supported-device documentation before buying used.

Google’s U.S. connected-home store and thermostat category show products currently offered there; availability can differ by country and change over time. Google also supports products that are no longer sold, so “discontinued” does not automatically mean “stopped working.”
What can Google Nest do?
Depending on the device, account, app and region, Google Home can provide remote controls, notifications and automations across a household’s connected products.

- Control devices: Adjust compatible thermostats, lights, plugs and other products from the Google Home app.
- Check cameras and doors: View supported camera livestreams, receive event notifications and communicate through compatible doorbells.
- Manage climate: Set schedules or adjust heating and cooling remotely. Learning features, sensors and energy options vary by thermostat.
- Use voice and screens: Compatible speakers, displays and TV devices can provide voice control, media playback and some smart-home controls. Google’s assistant and newer Gemini-related features vary by device and availability.
- Automate routines: Create actions that coordinate compatible devices. The options depend on the products and services connected to the home.
- Connect other brands: Google says its platform works with thousands of partner devices, including Matter products and devices bearing the “Works with Google Home” badge. See the official compatibility directory.
Having products in one app does not mean every function is identical across devices. Camera history, automation options, remote access and offline behavior depend on the model, integration and connection.
Which app should you use?
Do not choose an app based only on the Nest name. Google’s setup guidance separates products between Google Home and Nest. Some legacy devices may be visible or controllable in more than one place after setup, but that does not eliminate their original app requirements.

A Google Account is the current foundation for Google’s connected-home services. Some people with older Nest Accounts may need to migrate to a Google Account for newer features or subscriptions. App and feature availability can vary by country.
Does Nest require a subscription?
No single subscription rule applies to every Nest product. Core thermostat control and basic speaker functions are separate from optional services; camera features such as longer video history may require Google Home Premium, depending on model and location. Check the product and plan details for your country before purchase rather than assuming every camera includes the same retention.

Google’s current Google Home Premium page lists Standard with 30 days of event video history and Advanced with 60 days of event history plus 10 days of 24/7 video history. Event history records detected events; 24/7 history is continuous recording on eligible cameras. Feature availability varies by product and country. The page does not establish a stable price for every reader, so check live checkout pricing in your region.
Google Home Premium is tied to account, home and device eligibility. Moving a device or changing accounts can affect access or require additional steps; review the plan terms before transferring equipment. Subscription cancellation or migration can also affect access to stored history and settings, so confirm what will remain available before making a change.
How does Matter work with Nest?
Matter is an industry-wide smart-home standard, not a Nest product. It is intended to make compatible devices work across participating platforms. Google Home supports Matter, but a compatible hub is needed for setup, control and away-from-home automation; the device may require Wi-Fi, Thread or both. Google lists supported device categories such as lights, switches, plugs, thermostats, locks, smoke and CO alarms, window coverings, media devices and sensors in its compatibility directory.

Matter does not guarantee that every manufacturer feature appears in Google Home or that every function works locally. A device might support basic control in Google Home while requiring its maker’s app for advanced settings. Check the specific product listing, hub requirements and manufacturer’s feature documentation before buying.
Does Nest work with iPhone, Alexa or Apple Home?
Google Home and Nest devices are not limited to Android, but app, device and feature requirements should be checked for the specific model and country. iPhone owners can use Google’s apps where supported; that does not promise the same experience as Android or native Apple Home integration.
Support for Alexa, Apple Home or other platforms is also product-specific. A device may offer basic voice control without supporting camera livestreams, notifications, two-way talk or routines on that platform. If native Apple Home or Siri control is essential, verify the exact model’s integration before purchase. Matter can improve cross-platform compatibility, but it does not guarantee feature parity.

Thermostats
- Confirm HVAC compatibility, including heat pumps, multi-stage systems, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation equipment.
- Check wiring and power requirements, including whether the installation needs a common wire.
- Decide whether you want learning schedules, manual programming or remote temperature sensors.
- Check app requirements, installation support and any utility program available in your area.
Google does not guarantee a particular energy-bill reduction: results depend on the home, HVAC system, climate, behavior, utility rates and installation. For a moved thermostat, Google advises checking compatibility, preserving a wiring diagram, resetting the device so it can learn the new system, removing it from the app, reinstalling it and setting it up in the new home. Cameras and doorbells
- Choose wired or battery power and confirm whether the location has suitable wiring or an outlet.
- Check field of view, night performance, indoor or outdoor rating, privacy zones and household sharing.
- Decide whether event clips are enough or you need continuous recording, then verify the model and plan’s history rules.
- For doorbells, confirm wiring and transformer compatibility where applicable.
- If you need local storage or professional monitoring, verify that the specific product provides it; do not assume it does.
Speakers and displays
- Consider whether you need a screen, which voice assistant and media services you use, and whether current models are available.
- For Nest Mini or Nest Audio, account for the reported end of production when weighing availability and long-term product direction.
- Check whether any premium AI or home features you want are supported in your country and on your device.
Third-party and Matter devices
- Check the exact model in Google’s compatibility directory and identify any hub or Thread requirement.
- Confirm which advanced features remain available in the manufacturer’s app.
- Do not assume an automation or remote control will keep working the same way during an internet outage.
What to know about older or used Nest products
Discontinued products may still work, but they can have different app requirements, accessories or account-transfer rules. Google’s Device Access support list distinguishes supported devices from products still sold through the Google Store. Verify the model before buying used, especially if you need a particular app, service or integration.

For a used camera, ask the former owner to remove it from their account and perform the applicable factory reset before transfer. Google says a pre-owned camera may still be linked to another account; clearing the association may require waiting for existing video history to expire, potentially up to 60 days, though it may resolve sooner. Follow Google’s transfer guidance. A factory reset alone may not immediately clear every account or history restriction.
- Have the previous owner remove the product from Google Home or the Nest app.
- Ask them to perform the model’s factory reset.
- Install the device and add it to the correct home in the app specified for that model.
- If an account-association message remains, follow Google’s instructions; contact support if the issue does not clear.
Privacy, security and internet dependence
Connected cameras, microphones, presence signals and video history can reveal intimate details about a household. Google publishes Nest privacy commitments at safety.google, while noting that its broader Privacy Policy applies and that practices can vary when other Google services are connected. Cloud-connected products also depend on account security and, for many remote or history features, an internet connection. Offline behavior differs by device and function; do not assume camera history, remote control, voice services or automations will work unchanged during an outage.
- Use a unique Google Account password and enable two-step verification.
- Review household members, shared access and device permissions.
- Disable camera or microphone features you do not need, and avoid placing cameras in highly private spaces.
- Choose history retention intentionally and review it when changing subscriptions or accounts.
- Remove devices from your account and reset them before selling, gifting or leaving them behind.
Is Google Nest right for your home?
Nest is a sensible fit if you already use Google services, Android, Google TV or Google’s voice assistant and want connected cameras, thermostats and controls in one mainstream app. It can also be a practical way to add compatible Matter or partner devices without making every device a Google product.
It may be a poor fit if you require local-only processing or video storage, want advanced camera history without recurring costs, rely on deep native Apple Home integration, or need professional-grade monitored security. Buyers who want a more local, highly configurable system may compare Home Assistant; thermostat-first shoppers may compare ecobee; camera-focused shoppers may compare Arlo or Ring. Those platforms differ by product, subscription and integration, so evaluate the specific model and functions rather than assuming an entire brand is compatible.

That avoids treating smart-home fit as an afterthought once walls are closed or equipment is installed.
