The setup depends on the plug. A Matter plug can usually be added directly in Google Home with its QR or numeric code. A conventional “Works with Google Home” Wi‑Fi plug normally must be configured in its manufacturer’s app first, then imported by linking that service. Selected models also support Google’s Seamless Setup, which can avoid a separate manufacturer-app setup.

Before you start
- Install the current Google Home app on Android or iPhone, and sign in to the Google Account that owns the intended home.
- Plug the device into a US outlet and switch it on. If it belonged to another account, factory-reset it and put it in pairing mode.
- Have the Matter QR code or numeric setup code available. Check the plug, setup card, box and manual.
- For a non-Matter plug, install the manufacturer’s app, create an account if required, and complete its Wi‑Fi setup first.
- Keep your phone on the home network and enable Bluetooth when the app requests it. Many Wi‑Fi plugs use 2.4 GHz; verify the exact model.
- Some Matter-over-Wi‑Fi or Matter-over-Thread configurations need a compatible Google/Nest hub for remote control. Google lists compatible hardware at Google’s compatible-devices directory.
Method 1: Add a Matter smart plug directly
- Reset the plug if necessary, then wait for its pairing indicator.
- Open Google Home and select the correct home.
- Tap Add → Device.
- Scan the Matter QR code. If the camera cannot read it, tap Use setup code and enter the numbers.
- Follow the prompts to commission the plug and complete its network setup.
- Choose a room, then give the device a short, unique name such as Coffee Maker, Bedroom Fan or Living Room Lamp.
- Open the new tile and tap it to verify on/off control. Then try, “Hey Google, turn on the coffee maker.”
A Matter code generally commissions the plug into its first ecosystem. To add it to another ecosystem later, you may need to generate a new sharing code from Google Home or the manufacturer app; TP-Link describes this as a separate “bind to Matter” or multi-admin step (TP-Link guidance).
Method 2: Add a non-Matter Wi‑Fi plug
- Install the maker’s app and sign in or create its account.
- Add the plug there, following its reset and Wi‑Fi instructions. Many models require 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi.
- Test on/off control in that app. If it does not work there, Google Home cannot repair the underlying connection.
- In Google Home, tap Add → Device → Link app or service.
- Search for the manufacturer, sign in with the same account, and tap Authorize or Allow.
- Select the imported plug, choose the correct home and room, rename it if needed, and test the tile and a voice command.
Linking a service does not usually replace the manufacturer’s initial setup. Google explains the distinction in its third-party device guidance.

Method 3: Seamless Setup
Seamless Setup is available only for eligible partner models and requires the latest Google Home app plus compatible Google hardware such as a Nest speaker, display or Nest Wifi point. In Google Home, choose Add → Device → New device and follow the discovery prompts. Google’s supported-device requirements are listed at Seamless Setup Help. Router AP isolation should be disabled because it can block local discovery.
Rename or move the plug
Open Google Home, go to All devices, touch and hold the plug tile, then open Settings → Room or Placement. Use a name based on the appliance or location. Avoid duplicates such as several devices called “Lamp” or “Plug 1”; unique names make voice recognition more reliable.
Voice commands
- “Hey Google, turn on the coffee maker.”
- “Hey Google, turn off the living room lamp.”
- “Hey Google, is the bedroom fan on?”
- “Hey Google, turn off all the plugs in the office.”
Room and routine commands depend on your Google Home configuration. A plug only switches electrical power; it cannot control an appliance’s internal settings.

Troubleshooting
Google Home cannot find the plug
- Confirm power, reset state and pairing mode.
- Move the plug near the router or Google hub during setup.
- Put the phone on the intended home network; temporarily disable a VPN and network-isolation features.
- Check the model’s Wi‑Fi requirement, especially 2.4 GHz.
- For non-Matter models, complete setup in the manufacturer app and link its service instead of searching for the physical plug.
- Rescan the QR code or enter the numeric code manually.
- Update Google Home and the manufacturer app, then restart the plug, phone, router and hub.
- Factory-reset and repeat setup if the plug was previously assigned to another home.
The plug appears offline
Test it in the native manufacturer app. If it is offline there, investigate power, Wi‑Fi or the vendor’s cloud. If it works there but not in Google Home, relink the service, check the Google Account and remove stale entries. Remote Matter control can also depend on the controller, internet connection and hub.
QR code fails or the Matter plug is already registered
Use Use setup code. If the device was commissioned elsewhere, remove it from the old ecosystem or generate a new multi-admin code in that ecosystem’s app. A reset normally erases its network and account configuration.
Duplicate devices or the wrong plug responds
Remove the duplicate and any obsolete manufacturer link, reset the physical plug if required, and add it once through the intended method. Give each device a unique appliance-and-room name and verify its room assignment before creating routines.

TP-Link Kasa and Tapo examples
Non-Matter Kasa and Tapo plugs are normally added in the Kasa or Tapo app, then imported by linking TP-Link in Google Home. Matter models such as selected US versions of KP125M, P125M, TP15, P110M and P316M can use Matter commissioning, but model suffixes and regional support matter. TP-Link’s current instructions and controller list are at its Matter FAQ; its general Kasa integration guidance is here. TP-Link’s documented Matter procedure specifies Google Home app version 2.62.1.15 or later for that procedure—not as a universal Google requirement.
Safety and buying advice
Check voltage, amperage and wattage before connecting anything. Do not exceed the plug’s rating, and use only an explicitly outdoor-rated model outdoors. Take extra care with heaters, kettles, irons, hair dryers, compressors, refrigerators and motors with high startup current. Confirm that the appliance safely resumes operation after power returns; a smart plug is not a safety-rated control.
Matter is a sensible choice for a new US purchase when you want broader ecosystem compatibility and less dependence on one vendor integration. It may still require a suitable controller, and Google Home may not expose every feature found in the maker’s app. A conventional “Works with Google Home” plug can be adequate and may offer schedules or energy data in its own app, but it remains dependent on that account and service. Verify the exact US model and certification before buying. Do not assume older Wemo cloud-dependent products are supported: Google reports that Wemo cloud service ended on January 31, 2026 (Google notice).

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add any smart plug to Google Home?
No. It must be Matter-compatible, supported through a manufacturer service, or eligible for Google Seamless Setup. Check the exact model and region.
Do I need a Google Nest speaker?
Not always. Direct Matter setup may work without one for local control, but some Matter-over-Wi‑Fi, Thread or remote-control arrangements require a compatible Google Home hub.

Can I skip the manufacturer app?

Do smart plugs work on 5 GHz Wi‑Fi?
Many models, including current Kasa guidance, use 2.4 GHz. Read the exact product instructions rather than assuming.
Can one Matter plug work with Google Home and Alexa?
Often yes through Matter multi-admin sharing, but you must commission it in the first ecosystem and then generate a new sharing code for the next one.
What if I lost the Matter QR code?
Try the numeric setup code on the plug or manual. If neither is available, the manufacturer may provide recovery instructions; a reset alone does not recreate a lost code.

Can I use a smart plug with a heater?
Only if the plug and circuit are rated for the heater’s load and the heater safely restarts after power restoration. Never use a smart plug to create an unattended heating hazard.
