Short answer: Install the correct replacement filter, then hold your model’s filter-related button for about three seconds—or use the Family Hub touchscreen path Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset → Proceed. The exact procedure varies by refrigerator model, so do not assume that every Samsung uses the same button. After resetting, flush the new cartridge and check for leaks and normal water flow.
This resets the water-filter reminder; it does not reset refrigerator temperatures, Wi-Fi, ice-maker settings, or Family Hub data.
Before resetting: replace the filter and identify your model
Samsung generally recommends replacing a refrigerator water filter every six months. That is a reminder interval, not a chemical test of filter condition. Replace sooner if water flow drops, the dispenser sputters, taste or odor changes, ice production declines, or the cartridge is damaged. Samsung notes that significantly reduced dispensing can indicate a clogged filter even when the warning has not appeared (Samsung’s filter guide).
Find the refrigerator model number before buying a cartridge. Depending on the design, the label may be behind the upper-left door area or on the lower-left side (Samsung model-label guidance). Compare that number with the filter’s printed part number and the replacement product’s exact “fits models” list.

Common U.S. Samsung filter families include HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1. They are not automatically interchangeable because they look similar or have a similar stated capacity. Samsung recommends genuine filters and warns that unsuitable third-party cartridges may leak or damage the appliance; treat that as Samsung’s manufacturer guidance, and independently verify any third-party certification for the exact cartridge.
Find your refrigerator’s reset method
Your owner’s manual takes precedence over this general map because button names and software menus differ by model and region.

The indicator may turn off, return to its normal color, remove the “Replace Filter” message, or show a fresh filter status. A successful reset does not prove that the cartridge is sealed or that the water system is working correctly.

Before starting, obtain the exact compatible cartridge, place a towel under the housing, and keep the old filter for comparison. Samsung’s instructions for the covered filter types advise turning off the refrigerator’s water supply first. Dispense water until pressure is relieved.

HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN-style cartridges
- Open the filter cover.
- Rotate the old cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it, then remove it.
- Remove the protective cap from the new filter.
- Insert the cartridge and rotate it clockwise until locked.
- Align the lock symbol or indicator line exactly as shown on the housing.
HAFCU1-style cartridges
- Turn off the water supply and locate the cartridge.
- Twist the old filter left (counterclockwise) to unlock and remove it.
- Remove the new filter’s protective cap.
- Push the cartridge into the housing and twist right (clockwise) until secure.
- Align the notch with the housing arrow.
Mechanical designs vary. Never force a cartridge or use tools that could crack the housing. A missing protective-cap removal, wrong cartridge, misalignment, or debris on the seal can prevent locking and cause leaks.
Flush the new filter
Turn the water supply back on and dispense water into a container, discarding it. This removes trapped air and loose carbon particles that can cause sputtering, dark specks, or a temporary taste. Continue until the flow is steady and the taste is normal. Samsung regional guidance describes approximately seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses for some models, while other manuals specify a gallon-based amount; follow your refrigerator’s manual where it differs (Samsung Canada guidance).
Verify the job
- The warning light is off or back to its normal color.
- The “Replace Filter” message has disappeared or the status shows fresh/normal.
- No water is leaking around the housing.
- Dispenser flow is steady and not sputtering.
- Water no longer has a strong carbon taste or odor.
- Ice and water functions operate normally.
Troubleshooting
The filter light remains on
Confirm the refrigerator model and cartridge, unlock the panel, wake the display, and hold the specified control for a full three seconds. If your appliance has a touchscreen or arrow interface, use its menu instead of a physical-button shortcut. Check for a confirmation step. Do not repeatedly unplug the refrigerator; power-cycling is not the normal filter-indicator reset. If the model-specific procedure fails, use Samsung’s support and manual pages.

Turn off the water supply and dispense water to relieve pressure. Recheck the unlock direction and remove any shelf or cover obstruction. Avoid excessive force. A swollen or seized cartridge, damaged housing, or incorrect installation may require service.

The new filter will not lock
Check that the protective cap is removed, the cartridge is the correct type, the orientation is right, and the notch, arrow, or lock symbol is aligned. Inspect the housing for debris or damage. Do not operate with a cartridge that is only partly engaged.
Water leaks after replacement
Stop dispensing and shut off the water supply. Remove and reinstall the cartridge, ensuring it is fully rotated into the locked position. Inspect the cartridge and O-ring. Replace a damaged filter. If leakage continues, arrange Samsung service rather than ignoring a “small” leak.
Water tastes odd or the dispenser is slow
Flush more water and discard it if the issue began immediately after installation. Persistent taste can indicate an incorrect or old cartridge, contaminated tubing, a long-unused refrigerator, or local water-quality conditions. Slow flow can also result from low household pressure, a kinked line, a frozen line, trapped air, or a blockage—not only a clogged filter.

Some configurations use a bypass or are supplied without a cartridge. Follow the model manual and Samsung’s guidance for filter alerts without an installed filter; do not insert an incompatible cartridge simply to clear the message.

Choosing and buying a replacement
Use this order of priority: exact model compatibility, exact cartridge family and part number, manufacturer-approved fit, reliable seller and return policy, then price and availability. Official product pages can change price and stock: Samsung’s pages have listed HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 at different one- and two-pack prices, with some models offering subscriptions. Compare price per cartridge only after confirming fitment. A subscription can be convenient for frequent users but is less useful when water use is low or compatibility is uncertain.
Samsung states that its filters meet NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 standards. That statement does not mean every contaminant is removed or that every cartridge has identical performance; check the exact product documentation.
When to call Samsung
Request support or service if the housing leaks with a confirmed compatible filter, the cartridge is stuck, flow remains severely restricted after correct installation, the line or dispenser appears blocked, the panel ignores the model-specific reset, or another fault code appears. Samsung’s refrigerator support page provides manuals, warranty information, repair requests, and contact options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reset the filter light without changing the filter?
You can, but it only restarts the reminder timer. Resetting without replacing a depleted or clogged cartridge does not restore filtration or water flow.

Is resetting the filter light the same as resetting the refrigerator?
No. The filter procedure clears the water-filter reminder. It does not erase settings or require unplugging the refrigerator.
