The Xiaomi Motion-Activated Night Light 2 is a compact, battery-powered guide light for dark hallways, stairs, bedside areas and cupboards—not a replacement for a room light or a wired safety fixture. Its lamp can be aimed around a magnetic base, but its motion sensor has a published 120° detection area, not 360° coverage. The standard model, MJYD02YL, uses three AA batteries and offers two brightness levels; check the model number before buying because the Bluetooth variant has different specifications.
What the Night Light 2 is—and what it is not
Xiaomi’s Night Light 2 is a small LED light that turns on when it detects movement in a dim environment and switches off after roughly 15 seconds without detected activity. It is intended to help people orient themselves on short nighttime trips. Typical locations include a bedroom, hallway, staircase, bathroom entrance, closet, cupboard, kitchen or garage. Xiaomi describes it for use on surfaces such as tables and walls as well as corridors and bedside areas (Xiaomi product page).
Think of it as localized wayfinding light. The standard model produces 3 lumens on Low and 25 lumens on High, so it can make a nearby floor, doorway or shelf easier to see, but it is not intended to light an entire room. It is battery-powered rather than rechargeable or USB-powered, and should not be mistaken for a security light, emergency lantern or fixed building-lighting installation.

Magnetic mounting: 360° aiming, not 360° sensing
The lamp body attaches to a base with a magnet. The base can sit on a flat surface or be fixed with the supplied adhesive mounting arrangement; the light can then be detached and carried or redirected. The 360° description refers to physical adjustment around the base. Xiaomi separately specifies a 120° motion-sensing area, so turning the lamp to point its beam does not guarantee that it will detect movement from every direction.

For a reliable installation, aim the sensor toward the route people actually take, as well as aiming the light toward the floor or object you want to illuminate. A common mistake is to point the beam down a hall while leaving the sensor facing a wall. Walking across the sensor’s field may trigger it more reliably than approaching from outside its orientation. Doors, furniture, cabinet edges, corners and stair geometry can also block detection.
The magnetic body is convenient for temporary repositioning or carrying as a small light, but the adhesive base is not guaranteed to hold on every surface. Clean and dry the surface first; smooth surfaces are generally a better candidate than dusty, damp, textured or porous ones. Test the bond before placing it above stairs or a child’s bed, and avoid relying on adhesive alone for a high-risk overhead installation. On stairs, choose a position where a detached unit cannot become a trip hazard.

The two levels are selectable brightness settings, not an automatic dimming range: the sensor controls activation, while the selected setting determines output. Even High is modest compared with a flashlight, lantern or conventional room lamp. Xiaomi lists a 2800K warm-yellow color temperature. That describes the light’s color, not how bright it is. Xiaomi also says its testing found no visible flicker and no harmful blue light under the cited test conditions; these are manufacturer claims, not a universal medical or eye-health guarantee.

Motion sensing and placement limits
The standard model combines infrared human-motion detection with an ambient-light sensor intended to prevent or limit activation when surroundings are bright. Xiaomi publishes detection up to 6 metres in front and a 120° horizontal area, with lateral detection up to 2.5 metres depending on orientation and test conditions. It turns off after about 15 seconds without detected activity (manufacturer details).
Those figures are published specifications, not a guarantee of coverage in every room. Test the actual approach path in the location where the light will be used. A single unit may suit a straight section of stairs, but a landing, turn or obstruction can leave part of an L-shaped staircase outside its useful sensing area. Multiple units may be needed for separate or blocked sections.
- Heat and infrared interference: Xiaomi cautions that accuracy can fall when surrounding temperatures approach human body temperature and advises avoiding locations that regularly exceed 35°C. Keep it away from heaters, stoves, direct sun and heating or cooling outlets.
- Pets and moving objects: The product is described as detecting human motion, but do not assume it will reliably ignore pets. Movement in the sensor’s field may still trigger it.
- Bathrooms and outdoors: It may be useful near a bathroom entrance, but the reviewed specifications do not give an IP water-resistance rating. Do not treat it as waterproof or install it where it can be splashed. Indoor use is the prudent choice.
- Stationary tasks: A roughly 15-second timeout may be inconvenient if someone remains still while working in a closet or changing a child. Continued detected movement may keep it on, but it is not a continuous task light.
Battery life: use the conditions, not just the headline
The standard MJYD02YL takes three AA batteries. Xiaomi’s specifications list approximately eight months on High and 15 months on Low. Its product page also advertises up to 360 days in a specific laboratory scenario: 15 activations per day, each lasting 15 seconds, on Low. The page’s “365 nights” language should likewise be understood as a maximum-style claim, not a promise of a year under every household’s use (specifications; test-condition claim).

Actual battery life depends on brightness, activation frequency, battery quality, temperature and how long people remain in the detection zone. Wireless installation avoids routing a cable or finding an outlet, but it brings recurring AA replacement and battery waste. Choose another category if you specifically want USB-C charging or do not want to maintain disposable batteries.

These figures are for the standard model on Xiaomi’s global specifications page. Regional pages can report details differently—for example, weight may be stated with batteries included—so compare the exact regional listing and packaging rather than treating every page as interchangeable.
Setup and positioning
- Insert three AA batteries, following the polarity marks in the compartment.
- Choose Low or High with the physical brightness control.
- Place the base on a stable flat surface or use the adhesive mounting method on a suitable clean, dry surface.
- Attach the lamp magnetically and rotate it so the beam covers the intended floor, doorway or shelf.
- Check that the sensor also faces the walking route. Beam direction and sensor coverage are separate considerations.
- Test it in darkness by walking through the intended detection zone. If it lights the target area but fails to activate reliably, change the sensor’s orientation or position.
Control layout and battery-cover details may vary by regional version or product revision. Use the manual supplied with the exact unit; Xiaomi notes that illustrations and functions can change with product enhancements. A copy of the manual is available here.

Troubleshooting
It does not turn on
- Check that the batteries are fresh and correctly oriented.
- Make sure the brightness control is fully on a setting, not between settings.
- Test in a darker environment; the ambient-light sensor may inhibit activation in a bright room.
- Face the sensor toward the approach path and check that the person is within range.
- Look for obstructions such as a door, wall, furniture or cabinet edge.
- Move the lamp away from heat sources, direct sunlight or heating and cooling outlets; unusually hot surroundings can affect infrared sensing.
- Confirm the lamp body is seated on its magnetic base.
It activates too often
Try a different orientation or location. Changing daylight, a busy passage, pets or moving objects, and nearby heating or cooling equipment can contribute to unwanted triggers. The reviewed standard-model material does not establish electronic sensitivity adjustment, so do not assume a setting exists.
The adhesive does not hold
Remove dust and grease, avoid damp or rough surfaces, and allow the adhesive to bond before repeatedly removing the lamp. If the location is overhead or safety-critical, use a more secure mounting solution appropriate to the surface rather than trusting an adhesive pad alone.

Xiaomi uses several similar names, including Mi Motion-Activated Night Light 2, Mi Motion Sensor Night Light 2, Mijia Night Light 2 and Mi Motion-Activated Night Light 2 (Bluetooth). The standard global model is MJYD02YL. The Bluetooth-labelled variant is MJYD02YL-A; Xiaomi UK lists different output figures for it (2.5–25 lumens) and Android 4.4 or later / iOS 9.0 or later compatibility (UK Bluetooth specifications).

Do not assume that the standard lamp is Wi-Fi-enabled or that every Bluetooth listing supports Xiaomi Home app control, a hub, automations or remote status monitoring. The existence of a Bluetooth variant does not prove that all of those functions are available in every region. If connectivity matters, verify the precise model number, Xiaomi Home support, any required gateway, local app availability and the functions actually offered for your region before ordering. If all you want is a standalone automatic light, the standard model avoids ecosystem assumptions.
Who should buy it?
The Night Light 2 is a sensible candidate for a renter or homeowner who wants a small warm-colored light for a dark route, prefers physical controls, has no convenient outlet and is willing to replace AA batteries. The magnetic removable body and adjustable mounting make it flexible for a bedside area, cupboard or short hallway section.
Consider another type of light if you need full-room illumination, a weather-rated outdoor fixture, reliable light for prolonged stationary work, USB-C charging, remote control or smart-home scheduling. A plug-in motion light suits a fixed spot near an outlet and avoids battery changes, at the cost of portability. A rechargeable USB-C model avoids disposable AA cells but needs charging. A motion sensor paired with a separate smart lamp offers more automation but adds setup, compatibility checks and complexity. A higher-output rechargeable lantern is more appropriate for outages, garages or larger spaces.
Before buying, confirm the model number and regional seller, and check what is included—especially batteries and mounting accessories—as well as warranty coverage. Availability and price vary by country; Xiaomi’s global product page is not evidence of local stock, warranty or shipping terms.
