Roborock’s Saros Rover is a real stair-climbing robot-vacuum project—but it is not a product you can currently order. Unveiled at CES 2026, it uses independently moving wheel-legs to negotiate stairs and other uneven surfaces, with Roborock saying it can vacuum stair treads as it climbs. The company describes it as a product in development; it has not announced a release date, price or final specifications. And despite the headline-friendly idea that it “walks,” Rover is better understood as a wheeled robot with articulated, leg-like supports, not a humanoid walker.
What is the Roborock Saros Rover?
Roborock announced the Saros Rover at CES in Las Vegas on January 6, 2026. The company calls it the world’s first robot vacuum with a two-wheel-leg architecture. That “world’s first” description is Roborock’s claim, not an independently certified industry designation. Roborock’s CES announcement describes a robot whose two wheel-legs can move independently, adjusting their reach and height to help it traverse changing terrain while keeping its body relatively level.
That is meaningfully different from an ordinary robot vacuum, which rolls on fixed wheels and generally treats stairs as a boundary. Rover’s wheel-legs combine rolling with lifting and repositioning. Roborock says the mechanism can also make small jumps, turn nimbly, stop suddenly and change direction. Those movements do not establish that the robot walks in the usual bipedal sense: the announced design is wheel-based, not a pair of legs carrying a humanoid-style body.
How is it supposed to climb and clean stairs?
Roborock attributes the movement to AI algorithms, motion sensors, 3D spatial information and real-time control of the wheel-legs. At a high level, the system identifies a staircase or other non-flat surface, plans how to move, and raises or lowers each wheel-leg independently as the robot advances. The intended result is a more level chassis while the robot transitions from tread to tread. The company says Rover can vacuum each step while ascending rather than simply transport itself to another floor. Its CES 2026 description also discusses the wheel-leg movement and terrain handling.

This is a product-development claim, not a published performance specification. Roborock has not provided a maximum stair angle, tread depth, riser height, payload, or runtime while climbing in the cited announcement. It has also not published independent cleaning measurements, debris-removal rates or a comparison with conventional stair cleaning.
“Cleans stairs” should not be taken to mean complete stair detailing. The announcement supports a claim about cleaning as the robot navigates the steps; it does not establish that Rover can clean vertical risers, tread edges, corners, bannister areas or the narrow joint between a tread and riser.

Which stairs and surfaces does Roborock say it can handle?
Roborock mentions conventional and curved staircases, carpeted stairs with bullnose fronts, slopes, complex multi-level thresholds and other non-flat surfaces. These are intended use cases, not a guarantee that every staircase of those broad types will work.

Actual fit could depend on the geometry and finish of the stairs: tread depth, riser height, width, curvature, surface grip, carpet thickness, open risers, turns, landings, loose runners, and clearance beside walls or handrails. The company has not supplied a compatibility table or limits for those conditions. Until it does, a photo of a staircase—or the fact that Rover was shown climbing stairs—cannot confirm that it will work in a particular home.

Is Saros Rover available to buy? What will it cost?
No. In its announcement, Roborock called Saros Rover a “real product in development” and said its launch date was unconfirmed. The cited official materials give no confirmed price, preorder, U.S. availability, shipping date, final consumer specification sheet, warranty or Rover-specific service information. Any price estimate should be treated as speculation unless Roborock announces one.
That distinction matters if you are shopping now: Rover is not a stair-climbing vacuum you can select from a current product lineup. A demonstration or product announcement does not establish retail readiness, long-term reliability or suitability for a particular house.

The Saros 20 is the closest current comparison for homes with awkward floor transitions, but a tall threshold is not a staircase. Its U.S. product page lists AdaptiLift Chassis 3.0, double-layer threshold crossing up to 3.46 inches, carpet-pile handling up to 1.18 inches, 3.13-inch low-clearance navigation and 36,000 Pa HyperForce suction. The page showed a price of $1,599.99 when reviewed for this article; prices and promotions can change, so check the live listing. These figures describe the Saros 20, not Rover, and its threshold system should not be mistaken for stair climbing.

What still needs to be proven for a real home?
A staircase demonstration answers only one part of the practical question. For a multi-floor home, the useful test is whether the robot can complete the whole job safely and without intervention. Roborock has not confirmed in the cited materials whether Rover can leave a dock, find and climb the stairs, clean an upper floor, return downstairs, recharge and resume after an interruption.
- Safety and recovery: Buyers will need details on fall detection, what happens if a wheel-leg slips or jams, whether the robot can stop safely on a step, and how it alerts or recovers from a failure. No such safety or recovery specification is established in the announcement.
- Stair coverage: The published description does not specify whether Rover handles risers, corners and edges in addition to horizontal treads.
- Battery and speed: Runtime and cleaning speed while climbing are unknown, as are the effect of repeated stair use on battery and motors.
- Mechanical upkeep: Wheel-legs introduce moving joints beyond a standard fixed-wheel layout. Long-term owners would reasonably want guidance on hair and carpet-fiber buildup, grit, cleaning intervals, replaceable parts, repair options and whether stair use affects service life. Rover-specific maintenance information has not been announced.
- Whole-home logistics: Dock location, charging arrangements across floors, Wi-Fi coverage and what happens after a blocked route all affect whether “multi-floor autonomy” is practical.
Before treating a future Rover as a solution for a particular staircase, check the manufacturer’s eventual compatibility guidance against the home’s risers, treads, width, curves, open or closed risers, carpet, landings, handrails, runners and nearby obstacles. Pets and children near the stairs are another reason to wait for documented safety instructions rather than infer safe operation from a demonstration.
Should you wait for it?
If your main unmet need is a robot that can independently clean stair treads and move between floors, Rover is worth watching—but not planning a purchase around yet. There is no announced release date, price or complete end-to-end workflow to evaluate.
If your need is ordinary floor cleaning, carpet handling or crossing raised doorways, compare products that are actually listed for sale against your floor types, thresholds, furniture clearance, mopping needs, pets, dock space and budget. The Saros 20’s published threshold figures may be relevant to a home with raised transitions, but they do not make it a substitute for a stair-cleaning robot. If stairs remain outside the robot’s reach, carrying a vacuum between floors, using a separate robot on each floor, or cleaning the stairs manually are still the practical options until a stair-capable product is available and its limitations are documented.
