Sarah Bird became CEO of Canvas in April 2024, moving from nearly 14 years at Seattle SEO-software company Moz to a startup that turns LiDAR scans of existing spaces into editable CAD and BIM deliverables for remodeling, architecture, interior design and construction. Canvas is no longer the company’s current name: on February 5, 2026, it announced that it had become Twindo, saying the rebrand reflects a broader spatial-intelligence platform. Existing Canvas projects, scans and workflows were retained, with no migration required, according to the company.
What happened to Sarah Bird and Canvas?
Canvas announced Bird’s appointment on April 22, 2024; GeekWire reported it on April 17. The apparently different dates reflect the company announcement and the independent news report, not two separate appointments.
Bird was not a founder joining her own startup. Canvas grew out of Occipital, founded in 2008 by Jeffrey Powers and Vikas Reddy. Bird joined the company as chief executive after leaving Moz in November 2021. She had joined Moz in 2007 and served as CEO for seven years, according to GeekWire.

The appointment was notable because it put a well-known SaaS executive in charge of a more specialized business: software that captures physical spaces and converts them into usable design and construction data.

Who is Sarah Bird?
Bird has a legal background and a University of Washington School of Law degree. Her career made her a recognizable figure in Seattle’s technology community, through her leadership at Moz and civic and industry involvement. After leaving Moz, GeekWire described a period that included travel, startup investing, volunteering and remodeling her home.
That personal experience helps explain the customer fit she cited for Canvas. The company serves remodelers, designers, architects and other professionals who shape physical spaces. Their problem is rarely a lack of attractive 3D imagery. It is the difficulty of documenting an existing building accurately enough to design, estimate and build from it without repeated site visits and manual drafting.
How the Canvas/Twindo workflow works
- Capture: A user scans a room or building with a compatible LiDAR-equipped iPhone Pro or iPad Pro using the company’s iOS workflow.
- Process: The scan records dimensions and spatial relationships. The platform processes that information into a digital representation that can be reviewed and measured.
- Convert: Customers order editable as-built outputs rather than receiving only a visual walkthrough.
- Use in design software: Current Twindo documentation lists outputs including SketchUp, Chief Architect, Revit, 2020 Design, Archicad, Vectorworks, AutoCAD, PDFs and measurement reports. Its workflow overview explains the current process.
Twindo says its Scan to CAD process combines automated processing with human review and quality control. That means “AI-powered” should not be read as fully automatic modeling: the company describes people checking gaps and ambiguous geometry before delivery. Capture may take minutes, but final CAD or BIM delivery requires processing and can take days.

Why this matters to construction and remodeling firms
Traditional measurement consumes field time. A missed dimension can mean a return visit; an inconsistent sketch can create drafting and estimating rework. A usable as-built model gives a designer or contractor a more structured starting point and can make information easier to share among clients, subcontractors and distributed teams.
The value is therefore not simply that a scan looks three-dimensional. The value is converting visible existing conditions into editable, shareable data that fits a firm’s established software.
That does not make a scan a substitute for a professional survey, structural inspection or construction verification. It does not reveal concealed framing, hazardous materials, utilities behind walls, property boundaries or every inaccessible attic, crawlspace or ceiling condition. Furniture, clutter, reflective surfaces, poor lighting and incomplete walkthroughs can also create gaps.

What Bird was expected to do
At the time of the appointment, GeekWire reported that an early priority included filling a leadership gap, including a chief revenue officer role. More broadly, Bird’s challenge was likely to translate experience from a broad SaaS business into a narrower, workflow-heavy AEC market. That is analysis rather than a published company strategy.
The strategic questions were—and remain—whether the company can:
Rank #4
- AI Visual Tracking
- 0.05mm Accuracy
- 0.10mm Resolution
- Scan ranges from 15mm to 1500mm
- Intelligent Pre and Post Data Processing - JMStudio scanning software integrates scanning, editing, and optimizing into one seamless process.
- build repeatable sales and onboarding for remodelers, designers and architects;
- turn one-time scanning into a recurring documentation and collaboration workflow;
- make spatial data useful beyond initial measurement, across design, construction and operations; and
- serve individual professionals, small firms and larger organizations without losing workflow simplicity.
Company timeline
| Date | Development |

| May 2026 | Twindo announced expanded Spatial Assets support, in-app photo capture and SketchUp files delivered in SketchUp 2025 format, generally compatible down to SketchUp 2021. |
The funding demonstrates institutional backing after Bird’s appointment; it does not, by itself, prove profitability, product-market fit, adoption or accuracy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Current status: Canvas is now Twindo
Twindo says it is expanding from mobile 3D capture and as-built modeling toward a broader spatial-intelligence platform. Its May 2026 update described Spatial Assets for CAD/BIM files, 3D models, images and common office documents, included in all memberships.
For customers who knew the original product as Canvas, the practical message is continuity: Twindo says no migration is required and that existing scans, projects and workflows remain available. The historical name still matters when describing Bird’s 2024 appointment, but referring to Canvas as a current standalone brand is now misleading.

Practical buyer guide for construction professionals
Who is most likely to benefit?
- Remodelers documenting existing homes repeatedly.
- Kitchen-and-bath and interior-design firms that need measured backgrounds.
- Architects and site-survey teams producing residential or light-commercial as-builts.
- Small and midsize firms that need CAD/BIM-ready deliverables without modeling every project manually.
- Distributed teams that want clients or field staff to capture spaces for remote review.
Hardware and scanner constraints
The core workflow depends on compatible Apple hardware with LiDAR. A non-LiDAR iPhone, unsupported iPad or Android phone may not support the main capture process. Twindo also says its Scan to CAD pipeline currently accepts scans captured through its own iOS apps, not scans from third-party systems. Firms already invested in Matterport, terrestrial scanners or another capture platform should confirm compatibility before buying.
Pricing structure
Twindo’s pricing page, checked in August 2026, lists a residential Starter plan at $0 per month for up to two projects monthly and an Essentials plan at $29 per month for up to five projects. Conversion charges are separate:
- Starter: $0.26 per square foot for standard 3D CAD/BIM, $0.29 for select 3D formats or a measurement report, and $0.18 for a 2D floor plan.
- Essentials: $0.22 per square foot for standard 3D CAD/BIM, $0.25 for select 3D formats or a measurement report, and $0.14 for a 2D floor plan.
- Minimums: $20 for 3D CAD models and measurement reports, and $10 for 2D floor plans.
- Rush delivery may add 20%, and delivery times are not guaranteed.
Those prices make the subscription only part of the calculation. Compare expected project volume, average square footage, required file formats, internal drafting time and the cost of sending someone back to the site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOutput and quality checks
Confirm the required software version before ordering. Twindo’s May 2026 update specifically addressed SketchUp 2025 files and down-saving limitations for versions older than SketchUp 2021. Also define what the scan must include: inaccessible areas, concealed conditions and legal or structural requirements need separate professional work.
Why the appointment still matters
Bird’s move was more than a familiar SaaS name changing jobs. It placed a veteran of a broad software company into a vertical technology business whose success depends on turning messy physical reality into dependable workflow data. The subsequent financing and the Canvas-to-Twindo rebrand suggest ambitions broader than a consumer home-visualization app—but they do not eliminate the hard questions around hardware dependence, per-project economics, data quality and adoption in construction.
The Bottom Line
Sarah Bird’s April 2024 appointment marked Canvas’s attempt to scale a specialized scan-to-CAD business with experienced SaaS leadership. The company is now Twindo, and its direction has broadened toward spatial intelligence, but buyers should evaluate the practical details—LiDAR hardware, output compatibility, per-square-foot conversion fees and the limits of visible-condition scans—before treating it as a replacement for surveying or construction verification.
