Most waves in a projector screen come from uneven tension, an out-of-level installation, shipping or storage compression, incomplete deployment, environmental exposure, or damaged material. Start with the low-risk steps: identify the screen type, fully deploy it, let new material relax, and check that the case or frame is level and square. Do not iron, steam, or aggressively heat the viewing surface.
These instructions address physical ripples in the screen—not image distortion caused by projector focus, keystone correction, lens shift, or a warped wall.
Identify the wave before trying to fix it

Photograph the entire screen and the worst areas before making adjustments. Record the brand, model, screen type, and whether the problem appeared on unpacking, after installation, or over time.

Best for: new screens, recently unpacked material, and waves that are worse when the screen is only partly lowered.

- Turn off the projector so the surface is easy to inspect.
- Lower the screen to its normal full viewing position, or hang a fixed frame correctly.
- Ensure the bottom bar, tabs, or frame are not blocked.
- Leave the material flat and unused for several hours, then recheck it over the next few days.
Flexible material can relax after shipping or installation. Some manufacturer manuals allow a warm room and several days—or, for certain materials, a few weeks—for settling; follow your model’s instructions rather than a universal timetable. [EluneVision/ProjectorCentral guidance]. Waiting will not restore a sharp crease, tear, delamination, or permanently stretched fabric. Do not leave a retractable screen partly down if its manual requires full deployment.
2. Check and correct the level
Best for: horizontal or diagonal waves that began after mounting a manual or motorized screen.
- Retract the screen safely and support large units with a second person.
- Put a bubble or laser level on the actual case, mounting rail, or frame—not just the wall.
- Verify that both brackets are at the same height and that the case is not twisted.
- Loosen brackets only enough to adjust, re-level, and retighten evenly.
- Cycle the screen several times, then fully deploy it and inspect again.
An out-of-level case feeds fabric onto a roller unevenly. This procedure follows the troubleshooting approach in the Screen Innovations Solo 3 guide. A level case cannot repair a bent roller, damaged fabric, or failed side-tension system.
3. Re-tension a fixed-frame screen evenly
Best for: frames using springs, rods, snaps, posts, or perimeter retention.

- Remove the frame only as the model manual directs.
- Confirm every frame joint is seated and the frame is square.
- Check that rods, springs, snaps, or tabs are in their designated positions.
- Start at the specified attachment points and distribute tension progressively around the perimeter.
- Smooth the fabric evenly along the retaining edge, then recheck the center and corners.
Pulling one corner hard can create a new wave or stretch the material. Use the model-specific procedure in the fixed-frame manual or Screen Innovations’ fixed-frame guide. Keep fingernails, tools, clamps, and bare-hand pressure off the image area.
4. Inspect tabs, cords, springs, and attachment points
Best for: edge curl, corner waves, and retractable screens with tab, cord, spring, or internal tensioning.
- Identify the tension design from the manual.
- Look for detached tabs, loose cords, displaced springs, or unequal left-right attachment.
- Adjust only hardware identified as user-serviceable, balancing both sides.
- Run a complete up-and-down cycle and inspect the fully deployed surface.
Do not open a motorized cassette or alter internal tension hardware unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Some systems require technical support or a replacement cord or fabric. See Stewart Filmscreen’s support guidance and the Screen Innovations service instructions.
5. Use gentle heat only for a localized impression
Best for: a shallow packaging dent or compression mark—not broad waves caused by incorrect tension.

Only use heat if the manufacturer approves it for your exact material. If permitted, use a hair dryer or other approved low-heat source at a distance, keep it moving continuously, use the lowest practical setting, and let the material cool while properly tensioned. Stop if the texture, gloss, color, or shape changes. The Screen Innovations guide limits heat-gun or hair-dryer treatment to impressions.
Never use an iron, steam iron, direct-contact heat gun, concentrated high heat, water, solvents, or household cleaners. PVC, ALR, Fresnel, lenticular, and other coated surfaces can melt, stretch, discolor, or lose their optical finish.

For future storage and transport, follow the maker’s orientation instructions; many tensioned screens should remain horizontal and flat. Do not fold fabric unless it is designed to be folded, compress the image surface, or lean a large frame against objects for long periods. Screen Innovations’ support FAQ warns that vertical storage can cause sagging or creasing, while Pure Theatre’s guide says not to fold fixed-frame fabric.

Reduce large temperature swings and persistent humidity, and allow the material to reach room temperature before judging flatness. Recurrent waves after heating or cooling cycles point to an environmental or tension problem rather than a one-time wrinkle.

7. Replace the fabric—or the screen type
Replacement is usually the sensible answer when a crease, puncture, delamination, coating defect, bent roller, distorted case, or failed tension system remains after correct installation and relaxation. Untensioned screens can also remain wavy by design; tensioned fixed-frame and tab-tensioned systems generally hold a flatter surface, but they are not immune to damage or misalignment. - Replace fabric: economical when the frame, roller, motor, and hardware are sound.
- Choose a fixed-frame tensioned screen: best when flatness matters more than retractability.
- Choose a tab-tensioned motorized screen: a better retractable option when visible waves are unacceptable.
- Use specialist UST/ALR material only when required: these coatings are especially sensitive to pressure and heat.
Fabric is not universally interchangeable. Dimensions, gain, viewing angle, edge finish, and attachment method must match the model; confirm compatibility before ordering. A replacement-fabric marketplace such as ProjectorScreen.com is a starting point, not proof of fit.
Do not make these repairs
- Do not iron or steam the screen.
- Do not hold a heat gun in one place.
- Do not pull one corner or tighten one side without balancing the other.
- Do not use adhesive, clips, weights, improvised cords, sharp tools, or chemicals on the viewing surface.
- Do not roll fabric that is misaligned.
- Do not disassemble a motorized cassette without written manufacturer instructions.
- Do not install generic replacement fabric without verifying every dimension and attachment detail.
When to claim warranty service
Contact the seller or manufacturer immediately for damage visible on opening, torn or punctured material, delamination, a permanently sharp crease, a bent case or roller, failed tabs, cords, springs, or motorized mechanisms, or a new screen that remains defective after correct assembly. Include your order number, model, installation details, and clear full-screen and close-up photographs. A qualified installer is prudent for large ceiling-mounted screens and proprietary tension systems.
